Jungle if you are a masochist or have a thick hide. You will be getting flamed by your team, blamed for everything that is not in your control, and the general scape goat so they don't have to admit their errors, or that they had been out skilled. You will spend a good deal of time farming the jungle, and all the while hoping to god that your laners are not stupid enough to steal your creeps. Or worse... feed before you get enough power under your belt to go ganking. And when you do go ganking, you'll spend your first ninety something attempts bashing your face in with your keyboard because... despite pinging constantly and hiding in the bush for the past ten minutes... when you finally do make your move, there's no follow up... resulting in wasted time. Oh... and that laner will then later complain about you not ganking their lane.

Top lane if you'd like a less stressful version of Mid, without champions who snow ball based on levels alone. It's all solo, and pretty much all of your melee champions will be up here with a few odd balls from time to time. Ganks will usually come in only one direction, and occasionally you will be surprised from behind if you are unlucky and have Top-side spawn. This is a friendly competition of poke and kill. Where going all in too soon will get you killed. But at least it is very possible to make a come back, even after three deaths.

Mid lane if you just want to establish your dominance and stroke your ego. You're supposed to have your jungler's back in case he's been ambushed in his own jungle or, if he's been found in the enemy's jungle. But you never do. Instead you'll probably just flame him, see the masochist bit. This lane is where all your snow bally and hard carry champions go. You will normally be several levels above the rest of the players... if you don't feed. If the enemy kills you two times, you better hope your Jungler is capable of shutting him down a few times, because there will be no recovery.

Bot Lane if you love auto attack marksman. And you think the word ADC means that you are supposed to carry the game alone. This role tends to be very cut throat, and revolves around blood thirsty heathans who are being held back by a fraying leash. This leash is held by their supports who are trying desperately to keep their pets from being euthanized on an untimely noticed. This role is for people who have some massive egos, and are not ready to own up to their short comings... and instead will push all the blame onto their support when in the laning phase... and later the entire team when the roaming starts.

Support. The least selfish role in the entire game, and the only form of recognition recieved is given by the game at the end of the match. Not only are you tasked with looking after a rabid animal with absolutely no form of self preservation instincts in their geology, you are also tasked with not taking any form of CS or decent amount of income to buy your expensive as hell support items. But you are constantly blamed and flamed by this creature when you die to keep him alive, or let him die for a mistake you can not fix. And boy will they let you hear it when you don't get a sight stone, because a sight stone is an item that only a support is allowed to buy for some reason. While you do not often abandon your animal, your animal will abandon you to go roam to other lanes because he thinks you are bad. This role is often mistaken to be where the unskilled players go. But this is probably one of the hardest, and most boring roles to do in the entire game. Not only are you responsible for peeling, and correcting mistakes. But you're required to analyze the situation, and adjust pre-emptively. You might as well blow your brains out if your team chases a single enemy all the way to their fountain before the second turret is ever down. Oh... and you will occasionally deal with a top lane Riven main who will throw a bitch fit for you not running up to her lane from bot lane to ward a bush.

Telling someone else what to main without knowing what they are good at is kind of stupid. I am a support main because I have by far the highest win rate as a support. Play normals and find out what you consistently do well with and then go to ranked with it.

It doesn't matter - I got silver one with pretty much all roles (less of top and support) and some people (former EUNE rank 5) has gotten well.. top 5 on EuNE with multiple roles.

My advice is to get some mains (just as you said 2 mains per lane, maybe 3) and spam them. This should really be up to you and what you feel fun though, not "meta picks". (Although picking.. say, Nasus might be hard to climb with)

I climbed out of silver and all the way to a peak of plat 2 (currently plat 4) playing almost exclusively Taric and Swain. You don't have to do it my way, but I'll tell you reasoning.

The new autofill system makes it almost guaranteed that you will get autofilled support UNLESS you play support as one of your roles (it gives autofill protection). You can put support first and you're almost guaranteed that position. Then you can swap to the other one first (mid for me) when you do have protection if you feel like it. The only way you ever get forced somewhere else is when you put mid first and then get autofilled top or jungle (which HAS happened to me, crazy as it sounds, even when I support support second).

But yeah, it's a great strat. Can confirm that it works great when you play support. It might work similarly well with jungle; not sure on that one.

The other key is to find champs you really love to play. That's the biggest thing. This strat will work best if you really, truly only play two champs. That's been my experience so far, anyway. Eventually you can branch out when you feel like it, but I think mastering the game is easier when you're keeping your champion mechanics static.

If you tried a lot of different things, didn't you find any thing where it just clicked? Isn't there a champ where you feel in control, where you understand what's happening and what you have to do to win, consistently?

You can go at least up to Plat with pretty much ANY champion, really. So just play what you like and/or what comes easy to you.

Mid, top or jungle. I love the bot lane but it's not carry-mode right now.

Of course you can climb as support if you are a good support in your mmr... nothing to do with your adc as both him and opposing adc will be similar mmr. Climbing is down to yourself, not your team. As to what role you should play, whichever you like the best, for me thats mid/top (i actually prefer support to top but i dont wanna play support every game so keep top as my secondary). I find it best to master 1 or 2 champions in a few roles just in case of autofill and stick to them. I am only gold 5 though so cant speak for climbing after that.
