The pain of playing Malzahar

One game I was playing as Malzahar and I was facing a katrina in Mid lane. We were both level 6 so she shunpo on me and ulted. I was like no way bitch so I ulted her. Luckily her health was little bit lower than mine so I was able to lower her health around 100 health. So I use malefic vision and ignited her and one auto attack. She shunpo away and was going back to her turret thinking she can live but I knew she wont be able to live so I was like yes I did it. BUT THEN my jungler yi came from their side of their jungle and q in and ran to the other side of the Jungle. The announcer goes FIRST BLOOD. I literally just screamed OMG he freaken ks me!!!!!!! I was like that is just bullshit.

I notice when playing as Malzahar I am getting a lot more assist then kills lately. Malzahar can do a lot of damage but the problem is that he is not fast enough to get the kill due to his damage over time ability. I know I should use Q to finish them off but teammates skills are so much faster to land their skills and get the kills. I guess that the consequence of Damage over time ability. Any advice?

Find a group to play with. I know that isn't always possible, but to be expected when queuing alone. Randoms will either:

  1. Not care. They got the last hit, in their mind, it was their kill. or
  2. Be stupid about it. Most randoms are too dumb to understand that if a Cass, Malzahar, Teemo, Singed, Twitch, etc walks away, or leaves the enemy alone, it's because they know the enemy will die. For some reason players who don't play DoT champions, don't understand this logic one bit.

Or don't worry about kills so much. Focus on farming and objectives; they're ultimately more valuable than securing a kill. It's annoying, sure, and you don't get quite as much gold, sure, but killing shouldn't be the focus of the game.
