Wasn't one of RIOT's goals of S5 to promote build diversity?
I was really excited when I read about this. Personally, I have always loved when you can build a champion multiple ways in order to respond to different circumstances. It adds a component of intelligence and strategy to the game, and means that the rock-paper-scissors aspect of champion select holds less of an impact on the outcome of a game.
But what has RIOT done to promote build diversity so far? I can think of a couple examples: Sejuani: kit was slightly reworked in a manner that promoted building AP, but didn't prohibit building tanky. Evelyn: gets a bonus from building on-hit items. The siege trio of items was released (Banner of Command, Ohmwrecker, ZZZ'rot Portal) Righteous Glory was released
However, the items are only conceivable purchase on a couple champions, and are, for the most part, ignored, and therefore do not significantly impact build diversity. Out of these, Righteous Glory probably has probably held the biggest impact. Personally, I think that this is the right approach though. I'd really like to see it extended to other classes though. And if the item isn't being purchased by anyone, I think it's okay to buff it.
On the other hand, RIOT has also made changes to limit build diversity this season. Warwick: He was previously held one of the most diverse build paths. You could build for one-shotting, or build tank and have your utility with Okay damage, or even build AP if you were into that. But now, you have to jungle him, and you have to build him for one-shotting to be effective. Athenes:??? - At the end of last season, some champions purchased Athenes, and some purchased Morellonomicon. Now, you purchase morellonomicon. Or two. Something really needs to be done to differentiate these two items though. Otherwise, even if you have to think about which one to purchase, it's not significant build diversity since they're pretty much the same item. AP Trist: Unless the numbers on the PBE are changed, AP Trist is dead. I'm an AP Trist main, but I won't belabor this point since I know you all are glad she's dead.
DFG: This one bothers me the most. DFG promoted build diversity and play-style diversity. But, if you don't want your mobile-burst mages to become assassins, then fine. But can we replace the niche that DFG held at least? There used to be five pure-offense AP items that were a viable item to rush. Morellonomicon: Only good on champions who need the mana regen Akali's Gunblade: Only good on Akali. Kayle's Sword: Only rushed on Kayle, and occasionally Teemo. Lich Bane: Only rushed on Fizz, and only sometimes. DFG: Purchased on champions who don't want defensive stats but also don't fit into the previous categories.
If RIOT wants to delete it because they feel it's toxic, then okay. But it should at least be replaced by something to fill the gap. What are Kat's build options now? Sorc Boots Zhonyas Deathcap Void Staff Any high elo Kat main you will talk to absolutely hates building defensive stats on Kat besides Zhonyas, stating that if you are getting hit significantly then you played her wrong. But, personally, I think Rylais is okay on her. This belief is supported by winrate data as well. That brings us to 5 items. Potentially, you could fill up the last spot with Mejais. That isn't an item you're supposed to rely on though.
The point is, there isn't really 6 offensive items for Kat. And I'm sure there's some other champions I'm missing who are going to be at a loss for what to purchase as their final item, because -nothing fits the criteria they are interested in- One of the ramifications of this is that the first 5 items will have a 100% purchase rate on that champion.
So.. I guess.. TL;DR: There should be an item released to fill the offensive mana-less niche that DFG held, but can we be careful to not release an item that is so powerful on a champion that the champion gets nerfed in a manner that they can build nothing but that item (a la Warwick)
,
, and
as last items on
. While I agree with your point, I disagree that
and
are only built on
and
. With the WW nerfs I think he now has the most build diversity of any champ.
