It is indeed much harder to carry a game as a support. You can do it, sure, and they definitely impact the game more than your average player thinks, but they also have some huge hurdles to clear: (Oh, this is coming from a gold/plat support main!)

  1. Less gold income = less power. No matter which way you slice it, Supports are not as potent as mids and tops because of gold.
  2. Dependence on the ADC/other players - if your adc is amazing, then yes - your carry potential just went through the roof - but if your ADC is horrible, then your carry potential is meh at best.

Why do people lump Sona with Janna still? Do you guys actually play this champion or do you just watch one-shot vids and come back here?

A support's job is to protect the ADC and help them scale up so they can become relevant. Sure, they can win bot. They can also win mid if they successfully roam but in truth, it's the jungler who has the most influence on games.

not saying its the only way to carry, but generally supports don't deal damage, and when your team is behind, no amount of healing can really help them out :v but soraka, Leona, blitz and others can definetly carry

70.8 % on my Naut support. I laugh at all the kids crying about getting autofilled support. ( i do cry about getting autofilled/adc/mid tho XD)

I've been enjoying Nautilus support.

I can somewhat redeem team compositions with 4 squishy carries by letting us actually engage fights and lockdown targets.

Being in Platinum is different. Try carrying your way out bronze or silver with a support.

Your teammates can't be counted on being competent enough for your support to make enough of an impact. Aggressive roaming support has more of a chance, but even that is an uphill climb.

Just play Zyra, build magic penetration and bush people.

item 3303 -> item 2049 -> item 3020 -> item 3136 ->item 3151 -> item 3135

If you control vision around the area (sweeping the bush, warding their path), you can just keep ambushing squishy targets and bursting them down.

Crush your lane (warding it to deter ganks), push your advantage and catch people out.

Alternatively, pick Blitzcrank and just keep grabbing people to their death.

If you are higher than plat then you only prove my point further.

Carrying in high elo as support is a completely different task than carrying at low elo as support.

Because it's percieved that way, as support carry indirectly through utility and healing.

the people that say that dont play support

Generally, they don't know how to support properly and just sit behind their ADC (or in a bush) for the laning phase.

If you know how to trade in lane, enable your allies in teamfights, control vision around the map and roam for ganks/objectives, you can carry rather well as support.

Honestly, I'd place them just below the jungle and mid-laner for carry potential.

Think of it as a war.

the supply department can't lead a battle to victory like the land air and navy force can.
