Varus Analyzed, why he isn't picked, why he isn't strong, and where he could be stronger

Right here, right now, I'm going to analyze Varus and what hes good at. After that I will compare him to Vayne and tell what makes him good and what makes him weak. Why Vayne? Vayne is in a good spot clearly, she has a high win rate in competitive play and is clearly synergized as an adc, with herself and the meta. If your smart and your convinced that Varus is weak and Vayne is strong already, skip down to when I talk about Vayne having more sustain, mobility than Varus.

(Laning strength) Living Vengeance: When Varus kills an enemy unit, he gains 20% attack speed for three seconds. If Varus scores a kill or assist for an enemy champion, he gains 60% attack speed for six seconds. This ability doesn't stack more than once, but the duration can be refreshed. This ability is good, but I wouldn't say Varus needed this so much, and its strongest in the laning phase, since you can only take use of it for farming and then getting in small trades with enemy champions. It can be used when an enemy champion dies and there's another enemy champion trying to kill you or your team. You can't make much use of this when taking objectives or when ganking other lanes however, so I can just list it off as a laning skill.

(Trading, and minor objective securing strength) Piercing Arrow: Varus can instantly fire a weak, small arrow over very little range OR wait a second and fire a big, strong arrow over a decent range. I'm not gonna get into numbers but this is Varus main skill for trading and dealing damage, its also most players favorite ability he has, since it can deal a lot of damage and secure most kills because of its long range. Another feature about this ability is how it can travel through enemies, but has its damage reduced for doing so. This could possibly be used for taking Dragon or Baron, but its best suited for fighting other players.

(Minor farming and minor trading strength) Blighted Quiver: Varus auto attacks deal on-hit magic damage and apply Blight for a while (Five seconds?) An enemy can have three stacks of blight applied to them at once. The stacks can be detonated by abilities to deal magic damage based on a % of they're maximum health. This skill is kinda weird, you need the on-hit magic damage to trade early on, but you don't max it because your other spells can trade harder, but late game it can be used to trade somewhat better with bruisers. The on-hit magic damage is rather weak lategame however, and nothing is promising about this ability in any stage of the game. Its best used at trading and farming, but not really good for anything else.

(Minor trading, minor sustain strength) Hail of Arrows: Varus fires several arrows into an area, dealing weak on hit physical damage and creating an area. In this area, enemies are slowed by 25/35/45/55% and all healing is reduced by 50%. This ability would be really good to trade late game against an enemy adc, and it can be used to chase or run from enemies a little bit. Its not really a guarantee to get out of a bad situation though, like a Leona or Thresh engage. This is best used for trading, and somewhat usable for sustain. Unfortunately this easily falls off in terms of damage lategame. (Teamfight and minor escape strength) Chain of Corruption: Varus unleashes a tendril of corruption over a decent range, dealing decent magic damage and snaring the first enemy champion hit for two seconds. It moves toward other enemy champions over a small area around the first target to apply the same damage and snare time to them. This ability can be best used to escape his enemies, or in a teamfight to lock down targets and trade. Its his best ability for escaping but its got a long cooldown since it can also be very useful in a team fight.

So combining all these, and listing them, Varus has some laning strength, good trading strength, and weak sustain and escape strength. This guys just all over the place, but he also has the highest cooldowns and mana costs for an adc. He has a lot of utility, and damage potential but almost no sustain. Now lets look at Vayne.

(Minor sustain strength) Night Hunter: Vayne gains 30 movement speed when moving toward a visible enemy champion within 2000 units. This ability is very weak, but Vayne can get into fights more easily with this ability and unless an enemy enters brush or has an escape of they're own she will destroy them, if she has the burst.

(Sustain and minor trading strength) Tumble: Vayne dashes a short distance, and her next auto attack on-hit deals a decent % of her total attack damage as bonus physical damage, the dash resets her attack timer as well. This ability is known for dodging skill shots and getting out of bad situations, and it is very helpful throughout the whole game.

(Trading Strength) Silver bolts: Vayne basic attacks and spells mark an enemy, but can only be applied to one target, being removed if she switches targets. The third attack or spell against this target will deal 20/30/40/50/60 (+4/5/6/7/8% of they're maximum health) true damage to them. This is amazing compared to Varuses Blighted Quiver, being a strong way to fight bruisers or trade with other carries.

(Sustain and minor trading strength) Condemn: Vayne fires an enemy away from her 470 units, dealing decent physical damage. If the enemy hits a wall, they take the physical damage again and are stunned for 1.5 seconds. This ability is Vaynees best form of sustain in her kit, and it also allows her to trade very well out of lane if she doesn't have a wall summoning support.

(Heavy trading strength) Vayne gains 30/50/70 attack damage and stealth for one second after using tumble, and her passive is tripled. The duration is 8/10/12 seconds. This is amazing for Vayne, it allows her to demolish an enemy adc in a flat out trade. It also gives Vayne some sustain since she can be stealthed temporarily. Overall, Vayne has a lot of trading strength, and a decent amount of sustain. Vayne does, however have some weakness in the fact that she has little to no trading strength early on, she can't nuke her enemies like Varus but she does have strong auto attack trades in comparison. If we look at other champions, we realize that they also have heavy trading power and sustain. The exceptions being Ashe , Urgot , and Varus. These characters don't have necessarily good sustain. They aren't mobile on they're own, and they don't have the same kind of trading power Lucian , Vayne, and Tristana have. Some of you might think, well if a champion is strong in multiple areas then they must be really good and easy, right? No, even if they have several other resorts of where they can do good they aren't really good, and they aren't easy because of the dreadful lategame meta. Because were talking about adc, not support, not mid, not top, and most certainly not jungle. Varus being there in the top 35 champions with lowest base stats, he can't do other things. Some people take him mid, and its humiliating to see those ad ratios go to absolute waste and Varus ulting the full health Maokai because he can't save himself. If Varus were to be viable in high competitive play as an adc, he would need some sort of mobility or sustain to replace his utility. Some of you might think: “It would be SO op to see Varus have an escape, when he already can make one with his ult and e.” That is honestly a joke now, because there already is a champion who can do that. Remember Sivir? She has a spell shield, an escape or chase ult, and a somewhat escape like passive. Sivir may not be flat out safe but she can easily ignore a lot of her enemies and get back to safety. Varus could be like that, he could have a real sustain tool besides his ultimate, it just couldn't be too easy to use. His E doesn't really count, since it has such a high cooldown and it is weak in this meta. So I hope that we the community, can share our ideas and hope Riot finds they're solution with our help so that Varus can be a good marksman choice, that could only rely on his team countering the enemy team. Please, link to other threads about rework ideas or share your own idea of what could be fixed here. Varus is currently an early game adc that falls off very hard with no sustain or escape.Varus

Why on earth do you keep calling abilities "sustain"? Sustain means things like life steal and self healing, not self peel, stealth, and CC.

First issue with your analysis: Varus is an early game lane bully, while Vayne is a late game hypercarry. They are literally opposite ends of the ADC spectrum. Varus is more akin to MF and Ashe than Vayne in SO many ways.

  • All are lane bullies (either high early damage, long range, CC, or some mix of those abilities)

  • All are item dependent (they fare worst if they farm poorly because they have weak steroids)

  • All are immobile (in comparison to most "meta" champs such as Lucian, Corki, or Vayne)

  • All have hugely impactful ults (MF ult can melt a whole team if placed well, Ashe can stun for 3 seconds, Varus can CC a whole team)

Vayne on the other hand is a hyper carry. She relies on steroids, mobility, and low base stats with extreme scaling to become almost un-fightable late game, which is the opposite of the other three. Vayne is strong because the meta calls for high mobility high damage ADCs.

Varus himself is weak for several other reasons.

  • His passive is nearly useless outside of CSing (something you pointed out)

  • His ult is very unreliable in its job (It is too hard to hit, has too long of a cool down, and takes far too long to jump to new targets)

  • His primary damage sources deal opposite damage types (Q and Blighted quiver are the two main damage spells he has other than AAs, but one deals physical, one deals magical. This isn't a huge problem though because it is what makes his early game strong)

  • He requires several attacks to access his burst (W deals significant damage all game long, but it takes several hits to make it deal reasonable damage, and at that point, he has usually already won or lost a fight)

Probably the easiest fixes to his kit that almost anyone who plays Varus would agree on is somehow changing his Passive, and replacing it with blighted quiver's stacks, while giving his W an active steroid. My personal favorite idea is this: Passive, Blighted Quiver: Varus' auto attacks apply a stack of blight each hit (stacks three times) hitting an enemy with a spell consumes the stacks to deal 2/2.75/3.5/4.25/5% (+(2% AP)%) of the targets max health as magic damage per stack (This is identical to how the current blight stacks work). W, Living Vengeance: Passive: Varus' auto attacks deal 10/14/18/22/26 (+25% AP) bonus magic damage on hit. Additionally, killing a minion or getting a kill/assist grants half of the AS steroid of the active. Active: Varus gains 30/40/50/60/70% AS for 6 seconds. While the buff lasts, it increases the damage dealt by his passive by 50% (3/4.125/5.25/6.375/7.5% (+(3% AP)%) max health per stack). Lastly, just a QoL buff for his ult to make it travel faster initially as well as when branching to other enemies would tie his kit up nicely and help him maintain both his AD and his AP side, while making him more viable in both roles.

Varus doesn't need to be homogenized into another typical mobile ADC like Lucian or Vayne, that is not his role and shouldn't ever be what he becomes. The tweaks I suggested would help him FAR more than taking away from his kit to give him a copy-pasted dash like. He needs changes that enhance his current play, not alter it into something else we already have in excess.

^^^ While I'd tweak around the numbers a little, this is an awesome idea.

Tl;dr: Varus has no mobility.

sigh You're comparing Varus to Vayne, two champs that do two completely different jobs. Vayne fits more of the assassin role, excelling in 1v1 fights, she is also a notorious tank buster. Varus is more team fight oriented, bringing more aoe, CC, grievous wounds, not to mention a higher amount of % health damage, even if it's magic as opposed to true damage.

Varus isnt popular because he isnt mobile.

Does a high competitive winrate mean a champion is OP? Does a low Solo Queue win rate mean a champion is bad? These questions need to be fucking answered by the boards I swear every time I bring up a champions win rate people say win rate means nothing. Because, if we are relying on competitive win rates then I'm pretty sure Alistar is broken to hell since he hasn't been changed since worlds and during worlds he had a 80% win rate and 100% pick ban rate

Personally i think Varus' passive is utter garbage.

Someone else had an amazing Idea that instead of Varus' Current passive they change it so that when Varus detonates his Blighted Quiver stacks he gets attack speed based on the amount of Blighted stacks detonated. For example if he detonates 3 Blighted stacks he could get 25-40 percent attack speed bonus making it more dangerous to duel him when his abilities are off cooldown and he will get a burst of attack speed from playing his cards right Rewarding Patient Varus' players and punishing Varus' Who spam Willy nilly. It could Also present moments of Opportunity to enemy players to go all in on Varus' If they know his abilities are on cooldown.

I really Really liked the idea and was hoping i could get a Rioters attention on it.

I personally think that Varus is defined by his Q, and I'm pretty sure that after a long time of playing him in normals my least favorite ability is his passive, since when is killing any of your enemies predefined vengeance? I like the idea of killing something and getting buffed from it, but an AS steriod isn't the way to go, and its not really fitting as a passive since we are in the burst and mobility passives meta. I don't really know about Blighted Quiver, I mean the on-hit magic damage is great but I never really thought the % magic damage was useful at all when all your spells have a 10 second cooldown and up. Iv'e come up with an interesting ability that would allow for some power into other parts of his kit, if it replaced Blight or Hail of Arrows. (Cooldowns, mana cost, ect.) Enthralling Form Varus' body is united with corruption, and while concentrated to his battles Varus can surge the corruption through himself, making him tireless and relentless briefly.

This ability can't be activated after 6 seconds out of combat, or until Varus enters combat. Varus gains 45/50/55/60% increased total movement speed for 3 seconds, over the duration it decays down to 50%. Visually, the corrupt parts of Varus extend outward in curves spikes, it starts from his feet and goes up to the rest of him. This is what gives it the name Enthralling Form as he makes himself stick out doing this. Since Varus is restricted from freely using this to get from objective to objective or to his turret, it would be best used to escape a bad situation in lane or chase an enemy coward down. What do you guys think? I thought that made alot more sense than a free dash or anything like that.
