What would you say is the minimum number of champions a player needs to know?

So let's just say you have an aspiring S10 Ranked player looking to climb to at least, ehh, Plat 4.

Let's also say this player has decent background knowledge of virtually every champion in the game. Not to any serious depth, but he does know what everyone generally does.

Now, as a human being that probably needs to eat, sleep, have a social life outside of the game, etc., he obviously can't go out of his way to main every single champion in the game. Too large of a time commitment, and too many champions for him to really be good at all of them anyway. But he does need to have a dedicated pool of champions that he knows intimately enough to push to their limits, and a large enough pool so he can play in as many matchups as possible without being locked out by bans and counter picks.

So with this in mind, how many champions does this hypothetical player need to know?

Answers vary based on your primary and secondary role so feel free to include roles in your answer if you want to answer for any specific combination (like a Bot/Supp main or a Top/Mid main). You can also go with general descriptions like generalists and safe ranged farmers, or you can highlight particular champions (I personally think everyone should learn Nunu since he's a reliable pick for Jungle mains and a safe and easy pick for Auto Filled Junglers).

If supposed person is good enough with 1 champion, they can get to any rank.

If they are filled/banned out then they have enough knowledge to play other champions and sit back to be carried by team.

You should know 4 champions for your main role, 3 for your offrole, and 2 for the other 3. At least one champion in each lane needs to have a low presence (So Yasuo and Zed make a bad choice for your two midlaners, but Annie and Yasuo would be a good combo).

You can condense that down if you learn to flex a champion to multiples roles, and you should try to aim for variety in classes, damage types, and strengths in game (i.e. early versus late game champions) as much as you can (So, again, Annie and Yasuo would make a good pair of midlaners to learn).

I also recommend picking safer champions for your tertiary roles (So not Yasuo if you're not queuing as /mid or mid/, but...well...Annie is still safe. As is Ahri).

My recommendations for simple, generally useful champions would be:

Top: Nasus, Garen, Cho'gath, Sion

Jg: Evelynn, Warwick, Nunu, Xin Zhao

Mid: Ahri, Morgana (High banrate, so be careful), Annie, Lux

ADC: Caitlyn (high banrate right now), Sivir, Miss Fortune, Tristana

Support: Soraka, Leona, Lulu, Janna.

Plat 4?

Just a matter of how much time you got.

8 or 9, with some champions overlapping roles.

2 many 4 have 2 for the roles you play ir get put in the most. A 3rd that can fill multiple roles and a 4th for backup on your main role.

If they all get banned then play something close too your main 4 and just play bitch mode and let ur team "carry"

For instance if I got back into ranked and wanted out of plat I would have Janna, Soraka for support with Neeko mid and as my "can fill any role champ" as for my backup I'd run Nami... my pool is pretty big tho, I could list my top 4 for any role.

1 is the min. That said you have to be preforming above and beyond consistently. As you touched on if you only do 1 thing you cant counter pick, you cant fix team comp, and your dead weight if you get banned or filled.

3-4 for the roles you realistically are likely to play is adequate.

Well heroes of the storm works like this in a way. You have to be mastery level 5 in order to use in ranked

3 for each role at max 5 just to be safe

Depends on how much time you have to play games. If you have too little play time, then trying to play too many champions will hold you back.
