I was 6/1 and the rest of my team was feeding like sh** cray cray. I was playing Velkoz and doing great until well... Annie my opponent mid laner was suddenly 12/3

It was another terrible game and I was gonna give up all hope of league... Until next game

This next game was the greatest game of league I have ever played. Why? No one on my team was actually carrying. He'll everyone was pretty evened out. So why was it the best game ever?

Cause my team decided to work as an actual team and pull off the greatest, most impossible victory. They listened to every ping and no one played the hero. We grouped, played safe, and worked like clockwork. Everyone made the right move at the right time, no one was stupid, no one was uncooperative.

We won a game that seemed impossible, because we worked together

So I give everyone who hates ranked a tip. A game like I played in silver is practically Un heard of. Most of your games will suck and you will have feeders. But the moment you get a team that is down on thier luck and you plan as professionally as we did, then your hope will be restored

That is until your next ranked gameTeemo

Yeah, even in Plat this almost never happens (you get one guy playing with his thumbs up his nose and he gets milked by his plat opponent, instantly settling the game). For an actual good experience I'd recommend playing Norms until you have a high MMR, because there are actually a lot of good games in Norms. I'm getting matched with Plat/Diam most games and it's the best games I've had in League (plus then when you go back to Ranked you crush everyone). Should be even better without all the WWs now.

Annie: Graves why didn't you kill them?

Is there a correct answer for this? Is there some assignment of guilt? For me if someone says something like why didn't you do this, my answer is probably gonna be idk just stupid I guess.

Yeah it's childish for someone to respond that way but there is really no benefit to asking that question.

Well with these players that get carried through preliminaries and thinking they are good without enough experience for ranked is what I don't like. I honestly think they should start all players at bronze.

Onegarion3 votes

They start most players in bronze.

I know what you mean though. My youngest brother plays league and got seeded into silver. He doesn't know what he is doing. To make a long story short he is sitting at silver 5 (falling 2 divisions) 0 LP and hasn't played ranked since.

Its the same kid that told me "I know how to play maokai," but didn't know what his ult did, how to build him, or how to lvl his abilities. A lucky seed got him where he is while me and my other younger brother started out bronze and have both made it into gold.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

This is what I hate in seeding too. However one of my friends seeded into gold, and he actually deserves it. He kept with normals for months to learn the game better, he only uses his mains (and our silver and bronze friends say he doesn't deserve gold because he can only play 2 champs) and makes real gold level objective calls.

Ryvaku1 votes

Either of you can really provide proof that your "friend" deserves said rank as anyone can claim their friend is good on this game. Also they don't start most in bronze and by starting I mean in Bronze 5 always.

Back to my point that everyone should start at bronze to keep toxicity to low since newer players ruin the higher rank by just feeding/trolling/failure to communicate with the team which I still deal with whenever I play ranked. I have gone into the habit of checking stats to see how new each player is to rank and it never fails sadly.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

I think getting into gold by seeding is there for smurfs not to ruin too many games by crushing. However I heard of people who actually made smurfs because they hope they can make a lucky provisional and get to gold "where they belong". I can see your frustration though, I'm glad that I made out of the levels where unrankeds are mostly put.

Idk, I think there's a difference between "I'm comfortable playing Ahri but I've never gone up against Brand, let's see how it goes" and "lol I've never played an adc, what skill do I start?"

You should always be in the mindset to improve yourself, but to try out a completely new thing in ranked is kind of disadvantageous to your teammates.

If you play ranked tonight and see a first time Rek'Sai, you're telling me you would be fine with it? I wouldn't.

As much as people want to downvote this, it is true. Everyone is always practicing to be better regardless of what game mode they play. Even if u practiced yourr heart out in normals and picked up ranked, you are practicing in your own elo and progressively getting better over time(unless you blame your team every chance you get).

Ambient Snow2 votes

There is a Fine line difference between playing a champion you know how to play or a role you know how to play and getting better / improving.

And calling a lane / and picking champion you have no idea how to play.

Onegarion4 votes

You have to establish the difference here. One side has the person who knows how to play their champ for their level. Lets say Gold. SO they are a gold level Teemo. Its ok for them to play teemo because they know how to play him. This player is attempting to get to plat by playing teemo and getting better.

Where it goes wrong (and I'm guilty of this when I started playing ranked) is where people pick champs that pros pick or are deemed "OP" and fail hard because they don't know what they are doing. If I asked you right now How you should max Vladimir's, Galio's, and Teemo's abilities what would you say? Could you get it right? Are there other viable options as well? What should you start with them? How do you build them? Now take the same mindset and put it to any champ.

If you can't answer these questions then you shouldn't play that champ in ranked. Its one thing to spam 1 build or ability order, but to not know what to do is completely horrible and you should keep it out of ranked.

Team builder and normals have a longer queue time than low ranked, while not having access to free champs forces you to practice on the champs you have. I'm not saying always practice in ranked, but there's some reason to it.

This is one of the reasons why lower ranked games are bad...because people don't have the patience to just wait in team builder. So you go and practice in a ranked game where others are actually trying their best and wanting to win while you're just practicing. Have some patience and stop screwing over other people's rank just so you can have a shorter queue time.

If queue times are shorter in low-ranked play than non-ranked, I think something should be fixed. Besides, I mostly go into rank as my preferred role. I just don't bother trying out new champs/roles unless I'm forced to because non-ranked play takes a while to get into.

BADxW0LF1 votes

With Team Builder, queue times are bound to be longer because there are roles that nobody wants to play (cough cough support cough). I main support so usually I have no problems finding games. You also get the nit picky people who are too specific on which champs the do/don't want to play with.

With non TB normal games, if you're having trouble with queue times, idk what to tell ya. Seems like times should be similar to that of ranked. IMO, since TB game out, not as many people are playing the regular normal game types. Why play that when you can CHOOSE what role you want to play? And then nobody wants to support, or nobody wants to play the new jungle, and everybody wants to be a super OP champ that can carry rather than be a tank and most TB captains are looking for tanks for that top lane (that's what I do normally). There are many factors to it, but it all comes down to one thing: people lack the patience to just wait for a full team and then end up screwing over ranked players.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Ranked games (at least in Bronze) are almost instant pops. I've rarely had a queue more than a minute. Normals not so much. Also while people who are trying to practice in rank can be annoying (even though at low ranks, everyone is training), I've been in several normals where there's that one guy who makes your life hell because he's trying way too hard to win and rage.

BADxW0LF1 votes

And that's where everyone should be focusing on the mentality of a game. If you are trying too hard in normals, then you need to get out and reevaluate. I've never had a normal queue take longer than a minute. Not sure why you're having troubles. Yet again, patience. Or bots even just to start off with and practice the mechanics of a champ. I won't play a champ I just bought in ranked. I find it rude and disrespectful. I will wait for a normal game to practice because you essentially just need to get down the mechanics of the champ to know if you would feel comfortable playing the champ in ranked. If you were to inform whomever you are playing with in the normal lobby that you are practicing the champ, I'm sure raging wouldn't be as much of an issue.

I would much rather not screw with someone's rank just because I want to get some practice with a champ/role. It's rude and disrespectful to people who are actually trying to rank up.

This is one reason I keep falling the rank, yes its not all there fault i do have my bad games at times to, but it would make it more doable if people werent like this. Last ranked game I played i main adc and my soraka just kept laughing how they were bronze playing with silvers then afked kinda i guess to sit at base and just laugh and comment that he was bronze and 2 of us were silvers. I will never understand the people who play ranked to not win or the people who play just to make you lose.

Sîcarîus2 votes

To the Udyr, it's about playing what's fun to you. I actually played Urgot jungle and Brand support to get to plat last season(Eh, I guess the day after the season ended, but you get my point). And to you, not necessarily. You should always be "practicing" regardless if it's ranked or normals. You're bronze/silver, which means you lack a lot in terms of this game(Whether it be your knowledge, mechanics, or just overall mindset -- probably all 3 tbh). With this said, you need to understand that there's a reason why Riot does have a ranking system, and why every game really does for that matter. It's because, ideally, you're supposed to do ranked from the time you're able to. That way your MMR will properly indicate your skill level. It just so happens that league is so huge that we have plenty of sites to show you stats of other players and such, so everyone just assumes you should do normals until you are "good", then you should do ranked. This isn't the case at all. It's hard for me to explain it fully, but people from Starcraft, WoW, DOTA, etc. will understand the point I'm trying to make more clearly.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

It's true, but getting to the bottom of bronze from provisionals and getting out while learning the game will slow you down a lot. I feel it's a lot faster to get yourself at a higher skill level than the other unrankeds, and you will be seeded into a higher place. Advancing in ranks takes a lot of time actually, especially if you tend to go on tilt in promos.

{quoted} If you can't get out of Silver or Bronze, it's probably because you're where you deserve to be.

Exactly.

I jumped into ranked right after 30 and got placed in S5. Grinded silver for a few months and learned a WHOLE lot about the game. Now I'm Gold and I can see that looking back, I had a lot to learn (and still do) and it wasn't really that I was in elo hell, but that I was really just playing badly.

Every single game you should be learning something. I honestly feel like Normals are a waste of time for several reasons:

  1. People are going to screw around a lot more in them, so you can't seriously practice anything because it's not a real ranked environment
  2. You can't see if you're actually improving or where you are ranked among fellow players

I'm sure you can improve fundamentals a bit in Normals, but I prefer the "throw them in the water and force them to swim" approach when it comes to League.

I feel like you learn a lot more in 100 Ranked games than you'll learn in 1000 Normals.

The thing is, you have to stop treating Ranked like you need to be Challenger in a month. Just treat it how it's supposed to be treated: as a metric for your skill level. If you are being demoted, you've got to figure out what you're doing wrong. If you're being promoted, remember what you did right and keep learning.

That's all there is to it.

P.S. Everyone gets bad games with potato players, afks, trolls, etc... It's at EVERY SINGLE TIER OF RANKED. You will lose games because of people like this. It's up to you to decide if it's worth the energy to get mad about it.

You are where you are because that is where you deserve to be.

No. No. No. I hate when people say this. While I agree with your first sentence, the rest is wrong in some cases. I am aware that many people have a lot to learn, but you can't be the sole reason for losing games all the time. Yes, there are some games where you may just plain suck, but I have played many games where my lane (support main) did extraordinarily well and the opposing top and jung got so fed that we couldn't do much mid game because we would keep getting destroyed in team fights. And if we weren't in team fights they would all come to whatever lane we were in and destroy us. You can't say "figure out what you're doing wrong" because it's not always going to be you doing the wrong thing. Don't tell someone they DESERVE to be in Bronze. You know NOTHING about them and their experience in ranked or their play style.

You always have something you can take away from a match. Win or lose. If you think you played flawlessly and your team cost you the match, then you are never going to improve. I'm not saying every game is winnable. But you have to stop having the mindset that every loss is not your fault in any way.

Also, being support main is a bad way to climb elo... so, yeah, you're doing something wrong right there. I say you deserve to be in the elo you're at, because that's where you are. If you were meant to be higher, you will be higher. If after a year, you're still in the same elo, then guess what... that's your skill cap.

I know everything about them and their experience, because everyone has the same experience. Nobody is a special snowflake that gets more trolls/feeders than others... We all get trolls, we all get afks, we all get feeders. Yet some of us climb, while some of us don't. The only factor in this is the individual player.

In order to climb elo, you have to be significantly better than your opponents. If you are barely winning lane, or even winning lane but losing elsewhere, then you are not significantly better than your opponents. If you put Michael Jordan on a team with 4 middle schoolers and pit him against a team of 5 high schoolers, MJ is still going to dunk all over everyone, even if the middle schoolers aren't doing much... because MJ is at a level much higher than anyone else there, so he will be the deciding factor. If you aren't crushing your elo, then you aren't the deciding factor, which means you are at the proper level of skill. Period.

How can you say that someone who has been "stuck" in Bronze for months doesn't belong there? You think they belong in Silver when they can't beat Bronze players?

??? You have clearly never played with a support main. I main support because I excel at it. I can easily get double digit assists, 80% of games). My elo is just fine, thank you very much.

I know everything about them and their experience, because everyone has the same experience. Nobody is a special snowflake that gets more trolls/feeders than others... We all get trolls, we all get afks, we all get feeders. Yet some of us climb, while some of us don't. The only factor in this is the individual player.

Truth, to a point. Elo is based off of win/loss. Not your individual score. So the only factor is not the individual player. It is whether or not the team wins or loses. If you have a player performing his/her best and another player doing horribly, guess what, your elo is dropping because of that person losing the game for you. Sure, you can do what you can to switch up the game (switch lanes), but if that champ is already fed, you are more than likely losing, especially against certain broken champs.

If you're going to use this analogy, then you can't put MJ against high schoolers (unless it's the senior varsity team from one of the best high school teams in the nation). MJ could 1v5 a high school team and destroy them. Yes, there are some people who are at the rank they deserve to be in, but not everyone.

Let's take your analogy and replace two players on the high school team with Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, because we all know there are a shit ton of smurfs out there just trolling the game. Yeah, MJ could still dunk on you, but so could both Lebron and Kobe.

Now let's go back to your analogy. He's not always going to be dunking on you. He still has to get the ball to be able to get all of the kills before the high schoolers wreck the middle schoolers. If I were the high schoolers, I would be harassing the crap out of the middle schoolers.

So, while your analogy makes sense in some cases, it's less likely that is what is going to happen.

How can you say that someone who has been "stuck" in Bronze for months doesn't belong there? You think they belong in Silver when they can't beat Bronze players?

One person can't be the entire reason your team wins (unless you're akali or yi). You put too much faith in believing that one person in a team game is going to carry that hard. If you have poor team comp, you're going to lose. If anyone feeds, gg.

Konidias1 votes

{quoted} ??? You have clearly never played with a support main. I main support because I excel at it. I can easily get double digit assists, 80% of games). My elo is just fine, thank you very much.

Eh, it's the fact that you are forcing yourself to be one half of a lane. Which means you rely more on your ADC not being a potato or else you will both do badly. Whereas mid/jng/top are not as reliant on anyone else to do well at their role.

Truth, to a point. Elo is based off of win/loss. Not your individual score. So the only factor is not the individual player. It is whether or not the team wins or loses. Yeah I get it, this is a team game... but there are still MVPs in team games. How often you are that MVP is the deciding factor on whether you move up or not.

If you're going to use this analogy, then you can't put MJ against high schoolers (unless it's the senior varsity team from one of the best high school teams in the nation). MJ could 1v5 a high school team and destroy them. Yes, there are some people who are at the rank they deserve to be in, but not everyone.

Except the majority of your games are not going to be filled with smurfs. That's why I didn't include Kobe or Lebron on the opposing team. Because that's an exception to the rule. When do you stop blaming games on smurf opponents and start blaming it on you not being the smurf? I mean, technically if you feel you belong in a higher elo, then you are already somewhat of a smurf yourself. (not "you" specifically, but "you" in general)

Again, if you have been stuck in one tier for months... you belong there. You will get bad teams, you will get good teams, you will go up against Smurfs, you will get trolls, the opposing team will get trolls, you will get a Smurf on your team eventually as well.

All of these variables are not in your control. What is in your control is you. If you are performing better than people in your elo, and you are doing this consistently, you will eventually rise out of that elo. Period. That's how the system is designed. It can sometimes be a grind, but you should see your elo rising slowly over time.

If you mapped it out on a graph chart, you'd see lots of little ups and downs but a gradual upward curve. But if you are seeing lots of little ups and downs and a flat line across the graph, you are where you are meant to be. Again... I have to reiterate that I understand this is a team game, and you can't win every match... But your INDIVIDUAL performance matters. How well you can lead your team matters. How well you can carry the heaviest of weight matters.

You can win your lane... Great. Now can you help your teammate also win their lane? Can you get your team to listen to you and group for dragon? Can you motivate your team to do their best?

I've definitely won games my team should have lost. I've even had moments where I single handedly won the game for my team when we were behind. Those moments are the ones that really matter.

Do you have those games where you are so fed that the enemy team surrenders SOLELY because of you? That's a good indication that you will move out of that elo soon.

BADxW0LF2 votes

I'm actually a game designer who has studied various rating systems including ELO and GLICKO in particular. I'm well aware of how Elo is calculated. I'm well aware that the game solely takes your W/L ratio into consideration when determining your rating.

What you are failing to comprehend is that you are the only controllable factor in your games. Right? I don't see an argument there.

You can't honestly tell me that someone who belongs in gold/plat/diamond cannot get out of bronze/silver because of their team.

I'm assuming you are the BADxWoLF who is S5 NA? If that is true, can you honestly tell me if you were placed in B5 right now, that you wouldn't quickly climb to S5 again? That you wouldn't crush a team of B3s?

The bottom level of any tier is the worst (S5, G5, etc) because of the big safety net that players receive for reaching a new tier. You literally have to do worse than a B4 to get demoted to B1 from S5... So the reality is, you are as good as the players you are facing at the moment.

Let me make that clearer... If you are S5 and you're up against B3s, then that is your ACTUAL elo. Not S5. If you are S5 and you're up against S3s, then you are set to climb. It's the big safety net that makes people feel "stuck" in place. In reality, that safety net is the only thing keeping you from dropping to Bronze.

I can understand the frustration when you are S5 because it's really hard to move up without a huge string of wins. If you hit 0lp as S5 and still lose a few games, your ELO can plummet well below Silver levels, meaning you will earn less LP for a win.

I guess I'm not done with you.

It all depends on how other lanes do. As a support main, I can't do much for damage. But you can't say that support mains aren't needed. Nobody is going to want to support, then, if everyone just cares about elo and carrying and doing a helluvalot of damage. You can't tell me that a good support doesn't help carry. Without a good support, you're playing 4v5 and getting enemy ADC fed. As a support, you rely on your teammates to do their job well. I CAN do other roles, but I CHOOSE to play support because it is what I am best at. I enjoy it. My team relies on my and I rely on my team. So yes, I kind of need my team to do well to improve my elo. Your opinion of the support role is very unappreciative for someone who has only won a game in their last 50+ games with one champ, that champ being Quinn (an ADC/top laner). If your support isn't great at their role, you will fail. You can't deny that.

Your titles mean nothing here, so don't talk to me about your so called profession that you can't back up. Sorry, that's just blowing hot air.

Okay, continue playing support main and remaining S5 forever. Why am I bothering trying to help someone who is obviously not going to take advice?

Also, I play Quinn in all roles.... Don't believe me? Go check out this recent game where I went 1/5/17 as support Quinn:

Yeah, get back to me on that "only play adc/top laner" thing, buddy.

He's not responding, and even though this is old, I will.

I'm just going to point out one stupid, moronic, asinine thing you said.

You are where you are because that is where you deserve to be.

No. Just... NO. What's stupid is being able to go 5/0 top lane, with bot and mid feeding hard, then going "omgg joongler no gank" When they are pushing lane. People like this piss me off. I can improve, I know, I'm not the best, but I don't belong in god forsaken Bronze 1. I can easily chain my combos, be the leader of kills or damage on the team, but when I play a champ with an engage, NOBODY EVER FOLLOWS UP. You wanna say I suck? I do have a few unfortunate games with my counters, yes, but other than that I'd like to think of my performance as positive. Then bot feeds 6 kills each and I'm stuck with a 4 man gank top.

hahaha Ranked can be a pain in the ass like that simply because it's not just bad players (those are everywhere) but people either get too serious about it, or blow it off too much. That aside, I have nothing against the game mode, I feel that seriousness oftentimes makes me play more carefully and therefore more consistantly. GL HF and may the force be ever in your favor

Perfect example of this:

Your LoLKing graph shows a lot of ups/downs.... indicating you are not playing at a level that is above your current elo:

http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/29571604

My LoLKing graph shows a steady upward movement with little occasional dips... indicating that my plateau has not been hit yet. Once my graph takes a nosedive, I'll know I'm at the elo I belong at, and that I need to work harder to get that line moving steadily up again.

I've learned not to judge off their lolking for a very good reason.

That same mentality, and the mentality that "I am so great I can play champs I never played before and win", are prevalent even in plat+ play. It's something you have to overcome at every level except maybe challenger/master unfortunately as those guys aren't gonna mess around with someone they never played or have little experience with, they know they play their top 2-5 champs at most to be on the bleeding edge.

Just had someone Rek'Sai in a ranked match..... 3 of us said "dodging" withing like 2 seconds. This guy is a cancer to the community. He just shows that there are people who don't understand what ranked is and why its there. Less than 24 hours after the release and he is playing him in a ranked match. I understand he MAY have played him in PBE, but it was bronze, there is a very small chance he has PBE and has player Rek'Sai long enough to be ranked ready.
