Assassins like Zed have mobility out the bum. Not to mention high AD ratios and an ult that turns him untargetable, allows him to shift around the fight and get out.
His victim then explodes like those delayed sword slash killings from action anime.
Is that bad? No, but what good is waveclear or burst if you die within a second after someone targets you?
Zed along with other assassins have the distinct ability to murder squishies no matter how fed. Their superior mobility to mages makes them a better threat becuase at least you can outrun a mage.
Is this bad? No, I slaughter Zeds when they lane agaisnt me. Has he been overnerfed? Probably. Preseason is giving him a new mechanic so he picks his target better, so we will see.
Also, why are you surprised that mages are the strongest midlaners when midlane is pretty much tailor made for mages?

Only one ability can reach far enough to dmg a mage (His Q and it drops dmg after passing through minions). Yi has an ability that makes him untargetable every 7 seconds. I don't see you complaining about that. His victims explode IF he manages to get enough dmg in. Most midlaners today nullify that ability. TF? Gold Card. Ahri? Charm. Ryze? EWQ getting a massive shield and dealing insane dmg. Liss? Ults herself or him. Lux? QWER RIP Zed. Annie? Say high to Tibbers and my dmg reduction shield. Syndra? Easiest QER of her life. Viktor? Stun field and chaos storm. Malz? Ult Zed for the entire duration of his ult. Need me to go on? Every mage is kitted with abilities that stop assassins one way or the other. Mages have Zhonyas for a reason. One of the easiest items to get. Getting Seeker's armguard already puts a dent on Zed's dmg.

Next, Syndra. Medium range spammable Q. Level 5 W picks 3 spheres allowing you to stun a whole team. And her AP ratios are high like Lux's. Her ult is worse than Zed's. Except you are playing with a Yasuo or Braum or you have Zhonyas or GA, it's press R to delete.
Next Annie. Do I even need to explain this one?
Viktor. Makes Maw shield look like a soap bubble. Get 180AP at level 18 thanks to his Hex core. His R deals MASSIVE amounts of dmg and his E is just disgusting.
All these champs don't need mobility because why run when death is the best CC? And if Zed was so "OP", then Syndra won't have a 56% ban rate.

The fact that you think they have an "undo" button is the problem. Zed isn't Yas. He can't crit around for tons of damage and heal off it. Zed is squishy as fck. One CC, Just one cc destroys him. Any players with a champ that has CC can just wait for Zed to appear behind and CC him. He gets focused by the enemy team and dies. Same with LB. Throw the CC to her starting point so she is forced to wait in the middle of the enemy team for the CC to pass the starting point OR go back and get hard CCed. It's all about skill.
