Shadow Kayn Question

Hello, I'm quite new to Kayn and have taken a interest in his inferior form shadow. If I were to take him mid would leveling my W be more efficient than Q? It doesn't have to be just mid but is there ever a time you would upgrade W over Q?

edit: lots of different opinions on this...

You always max w on laning kayn, as its his only range ability to poke/ farm with. You only max Q when jungling.

Yes, max W. It's the only way to deal with all the poke and CC in the mid lane.
