We a need a huge ranked system overhaul

LlamaSpeed··26 votes·2,067 views

The end of the season is approaching and I remember riot stating they will make some changes to the promos system.

However, I personally think the ranked system as a whole needs a complete overhaul. Here is why:

Rank is supposed to show how far you have come as an individual in the game. As much as we would hate to admit it, we always see players skill mostly through their rank. For example, we would much rather have a diamond player on our team than a bronze 5 player. This is of course, understandable because to our eyes the diamond player is much more experienced. This is ok, in fact the system of having ranks such as gold plat diamond, that system is fine. However, the system of how you're supposed to GET to those ranks is completely and utterly wrong and frankly, outdated. Let's take the example of tests in school. All of us know that these teachers can not determine our actual knowledge solely on tests. I remember reading an article the other day where the author wrote something interesting. He said, "How are we supposed to understand the level of knowledge in our children when the level of knowledge we are teaching them is how to take tests." He continued by stating, "If we are teaching our children to take tests, then how are they going to be ready for the real world? We should be teaching them how to sustain a lifestyle, not how to get an A+ on a piece of paper." (Please note that these are rough interpretations from my own memory as i could not find the official source) I could not agree more with his notion, and with that system in place, children are not being taught how they should and want to be. Now then, if we were to take that same example, and apply to ranked matches, we would have a similar case. Before i continue i do want to state that League of Legends is definitely and without a doubt a team driven game, however the word 'team' only reaches so far to many people. It comes to a point where your 'team' was a sole reason you went down in rank, or, in the same sense, went up in ranked.

I believe that your rank should be based on YOUR level of skill, rather than mostly other teammates. Of course, in a team 5v5 ranked match, all numbers should be calculated as a whole. However, when it comes to solo que ranked, numbers NEED to be arranged in a different manner, only because the rank at hand, belongs to a certain individual. That is the word isn't it... Individual... that will be the main idea of my argument here, that will be the word that brings all my ideas together.

Solo que: You take on the task of being paired with people you know nothing about. All you have are your first impressions on them and that's it. You don't know what kind of life they've had, or what they have been through, but that is what it is. What you depend on is trying to work with these people to secure a win, why? Because your rank depends on it. Most of the time, and definitely NOT always, you take on an artificial friendship for these people JUST to get on their good side, and JUST to keep them happy, keep them focused, in the sole hope that you can get them to play their best. You fear the moment one of them begin to argue, you fear the moment the peace you tried so hard to sustain is broken because of one of them dying. You fear THE MOST, one of them becoming a troll, or going afk, because it is at that moment, you know you lost that match, or rather, YOU didn't lose that match, that person did, for everyone. Everyone suffers the consequence that SHOULD have been bestowed on the one who deserved it. In the end, you suffered for the actions of someone else, and that should never happen.

We have an excellent system implemented to our game recently, the champion mastery system. Our performance with our champion is taken and transformed into a Letter, a letter that shows us how much farther we have gotten, or need to go. Because getting an S+ with a champion, gives you the feeling of 'i did it'. I believe this system should have been taken, and in-cooperated heavily in the ranked system. You wouldn't want to be arrested because you were with someone who shot another person, because you didn't do it, he did. In the same sense, you shouldn't be stuck in bronze/silver/gold/plat because someone else decided to screw you over, you were innocent, you did not deserve to get punished. Because in the end, our rank should be a manifestation of our OWN performance, because in the end, we are Individuals and we should not be calculated based on the actions of others.

Thank you for reading...

Does not change the fact the system does not rank according to player skill. Nothing you state changes that this is, indeed, a fact. And this is coming from a diamond 1.

The system shouldn't rank according to individual skill, because this is a team based game. The system ranks you with how well you do, but how well you do in a team.

My D1 rank on my main has nothing to do with anything. And yes, you guys have a D1 here confirming for you the system is atrocious.

Mastery is a poor judge, as you gain highest level regardless 'skill'. Right now it's a glorified participant award.

If Riot wants it to work, players should only gain point as their performance improve (i.e. only A and above would contribute point once someone is rank 3+ and lose point if they get a C, etc) and it should only work in ranked.

GIHunter61 votes

Obviously you wouldn't want to use the exact Mastery system as it is now. Instead, you would tweak it a little. The points you gain from mastery weren't even what was mentioned, it was the letter grade you got.

Honestly, the biggest flaw I see with the current ranked system is that you just flat-out lose or gain a huge chunk of points regardless of how well you did in the game. If you lost the game but went 17/3/7, you shouldn't lose 17-22 points purely because you lost. If you won but went 1/11/6, you shouldn't still gain a bunch of points purely because you won. It just makes it needlessly harder to at the very least maintain your rank if you have a string of bad games and easier to just have a platinum smurf friend carry you out of your rank. Not to mention it makes it far more difficult for support players to carry themselves out of lower ranks as well.

I agree with this post 100%, the system is in dire need of revision. I am currently performing an experiment that will verifiably and demonstrably prove that the system does not, in fact, rank according to skill and will offer my recommendations when I have completed the experiment. It will be another month or so in the works, but you have my word OP that I am working with you in this matter to see appropriate changes made to correct the systems flaws. Until I have completed my sample size games I ask for you to be patient.

Well I got an S+ going 21/6 AD Bard so I don't think Champion Mastery should be taken seriously... Who would play AD Bard in ranked?

LlamaSpeed3 votes

Well, Not many would.. But the fact you got an S+ was because of your individual skill... even with ad bard haha. Nice job by the way

If you can play a champion AD, that isn't meant to be AD, go 21/6, in ranked, then I'm pretty sure that is a good indicator of your skill level comparatively speaking of your opponents.

You took a champion that is NOT meant to even be built AD, isn't meant to even do much in the way of damage, and you got a pretty ridiculous KDA, not in a normal, but in ranked. I would say in that case, that should 100% be taken seriously.

Is it suggested to go AD Bard? no Did you do it? yes Were you successful regardless of the obvious issues (looking at it objectively)? yes

So why should this not be a certain indicator of your skill level as a player? Seems like you are invalidating your own argument.

Because you don't get my argument. OP said that that post game grades should judge skill in some way, which is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So I responded in a sarcastic comment saying "oh I went S+ with AD Bard does that mean I should be AD Bard Bot?" Fuck no.

The easiest fix to ranked play: Remove ranked restrictions for being toxic, keep it to chat rest.s and warnings.

instead issue out ranked bans to people who get reported for unskilled in ranked, FORCE PLAYERS to win normal draft games and theyll get better and therefore do better in ranked, and if they dont want to win games or play draft mode then we weed out the shit tier players and trolls, also

add VPN trackers to certain accounts/ IP ranked bans to prevent smurfs/alt accounts from playing

and if poor play continues even after all that, start issuing time period ranked bans along with a set number of games need to be won after the time period is up.

its really simple, alot of games punish bad skill in ranked play, by removing your ability to play ranked play if youre terrible at the game

Jhindere1 votes

I don't think banning people from a mode for being "bad" is justified. It should match them to people of a rank similar to theirs so they can possibly learn and improve (assuming it's a perfect system which league's is far from).

JAGMAG1 votes

except the ladder only goes so far down so at a certain point its matching shit players with bad players because it has no were else to go with the shit players

Jhindere1 votes

Yes that is true, maybe they could implement a specific queue for players who fall into the lowest category. I could see that but I just had an issue with restricting them from playing ranked altogether, I don't think that's right.

But we need to be scored on how we perform in a teamwork-based environment. If you cannot cooperate with others, then how do you expect to win team games?

And how would we score individual performance? If we focused on solo carry play, then the problem with "bad teams" (I quote other players on this, since I believe that you should focus on the common denominator first) will only get worse as people rage and focus on their cs and KDA.

I want the Ranked system to judge me off of my own skill, but I have an issue.

When I first played Ranked I did terribly and only won 3/10 of my placement games. I didn't do that bad personally, but I didn't do that great. This was my fault for playing Ranked probably a few weeks after I hit level 30 when I clearly wasn't ready and still a bad player. Either way I got Silver 5 anyways and was happy I didn't get stuck in Bronze.

Recently I started playing Ranked again and I've pretty much won all but 2 games, and have gotten fed every game but one I've played. I do extremely well and have relatively no issue with solo carrying my team.

My main issue is that, if I'm playing bad in Ranked, stop, and come back and I'm significantly better, I want the system to recognize that and sort of forget my older, worse statistics. Some may disagree but this would be a huge concern about the system. I don't want to spend all of these games in a tier that I constantly get fed in and win almost every game in. I think if I win 6 - 10 games in a row at a time, all of them where I can extremely fed, I think the system should consider at least skipping divisions or making it less time-consuming to rank up in ranks that are very easy. Right now Ranked doesn't feel difficult, but it feels extremely time consuming. I don't think that's how Ranked should be, the division you're in should always be a challenge and not just you spending 20 - 40 minutes solo carrying your team, going 20-0, while simultaneously on Twitter and Instagram.

It used to be like that, so people wouldn't play as a team. The best way to climb being getting kills, or not dying. There would be very little team coordination because the goal was to get kills. This would create a higher pressure system where kill stealing matters even more, and tanks/ supports would stop existing entirely.

Enosetc1 votes

i don't think that it necessarily needs an overhaul. a great deal of your rank should come from how well you work with others as a team.

it's frustrating to lose lp because of teammates who troll or perform poorly, but if you work well with your teammates you'll still rise in the ranks more often than not. even though solo queue is with randoms, you're still the one constant in all of your ranked games

shadecrapper1 votes

Promos are a bitch :D. Other then the grind of promos I dont mind the system. If you cant carry 4 scrubs then you cant rank up. Threw your own knowledge of the game you can tell others what to do (it has to be the correct thing of what to do) you have HAVE to win lane (usually) and roam to other lanes and announce your dominance across the board. No one will get 100% win rate, some games you will make mistakes, there will be trolls, and some games you just have to forget happened. But if you can average a 50+% winning average eventually you will climb.

Mastery rank is a terrible thing to base a ranking system on. It encourages getting kills and avoiding dying instead of actual teamplay.

Cina1 votes

I agree with the fact that something should be done about this. I like the idea of the mastery thing but I do not feel that that is the answer that we are looking for. The mastery is not always the greatest "judge" of how you performed in a match. Especially when you have players that intentionally screwed you over. There are tons of cases (I will be using my own experience for this example) where players do very well in a match with a great K/D/A and still lose because of a single person and then get a sub par score on the mastery system. I feel that the problem lies in the match making system and that something needs to be done about that (I believe you alluded to this somewhere in your post). If we can get something to be done to improve that system then this should solve a lot of the issues that you are having.

**FIX IT RIOT ** ...please :3

Win/loss is fine, you're flat out not as good as you think you are if you can't climb. Sorry. No matter how anyone justifies it to themselves if they were really better they would be winning noticeably more than they lose. Blaming luck is just a salty noob's line.

For those who are gravely mistaken: Many are neglecting this post due to my own rank, Bronze 2. I understand i am bronze 2 for a reason, but the point of this post was not even close to relating to me being a perfect player. I will be honest however, i am not a terrible player.. at least not all the time. However, being a good player and a positive player only takes you so far, as i did express in the post. Players will have bad games which is 100% understandable, but players who blatantly and purposely destroy the experience of other players should be accounted for, and punished. On top of this, all players victim to the trolls and afkers should not be affected at all, they did not CHOOSE to become a result of such an action. It is also because of these trolls, and these afkers, that most players find it Insanely difficult to climb up the ranks. This was the main idea of my post, and this idea can be seen affecting all players of all ranks, not just bronze. I do however, appreciate the support so far on the post, thank you for ALL who have replied.

Nameless Voice1 votes

My theory is that a not-insignificant number of games are decided by toxic players. Players who troll, go AFK, spend more time flaming than playing, are constantly negative and trying to lose because they don't think they can win, etc. We've all come across players like this. They're not in every game, but they're still relatively common. (At a conservative guess, I'd say that about ~10% of games are decided by toxicity instead of skill - since there are highly toxic players in roughly 20% of games.)

In order for matchmaking based on win/loss to work, then skill and teamwork need to be the only factors which decide the outcome of the game. For every game which is decided by a single toxic player, turning what should have been a win for a team into a loss for that team, the matchmaking system becomes slightly less aligned. This means that sometimes a player may end up significantly higher or lower than they belong. In turn, that can cause two things:

  • A game where one player plays much worse than everyone else.
  • A game where one player plays much better than everyone else, potentially stomping on the enemy team.

This can lead to more undeserved wins/losses because of the skill gap, but also increases frustration for the other players in the game, possibly leading the to those players being more likely to be toxic in their next game because of the bad experience, which in turn disrupts even more of the matchmaking.
