Tips for Chaining Ryze's Combo?

I've started playing some Ryze recently (and not doing too badly), but it seems like i can never quite do the chain-combo the elite players seem to do. I'm definitely not "elite", but does anyone know, in theory, how you're supposed to do it?

I take the mastery that gives 45% max cdr, i max Q in lane, and i try to do the combo W>Q>E>Q, and then i wait around for a while for CDs to reset :/

So, let's do some maths:

  • Q's CD is 4s
  • W's CD is 14s --> you need 3 refunds at least (and you have 2 seconds left to wait, minus the time you took to cast the 3 spells)
  • E's CD is 7s --> you need 2 refunds

You can get the 3 refunds for W by doing : W-Q-E-Q-W- and loop.

Also, I never played Ryze, but theoretically, you can also use your R somewhere in your combo to get another refund, if you are not quite exactly at the right amount of refund. And I did my maths at 0% CDR. If you are above 0% CDR, you still need the same amount of refunds (because your Q refunds less, but your other CDs are also shorter, so it cancels out), but the 2 final seconds after 3 refunds for W are not exactly 2 seconds.

Then, you'll need a real Ryze player advice for the subtleties such as: with which spells should you begin your comboes (I'm pretty sure there are some variations according to the circumstances), when you should use your R exactly, etc. I simply made basic calculations and theory crafting.

You go in with your passive, it's all about max passive stacks; that's when his cooldown refund goes crazy on hits.

You can charge your passsive by Q'ing the air when mana is less concerning.

If you lead with Q since it's the shortest cooldown it should get refunded off W fully instantly. I'm no seasoned Ryze player but I think in theory you lead with Q if it's your only maxed ability for most damage or W for most CC lock.

Everytime you press W or E during his turbo mode his Q comes back. So I imagine you almost never press w > e or e > w because you're wasting your Q cooldown and the cooldown refunds. So combos should look like Q W Q E Q W Q for example...

Now if you lead with W you won't miss Q and you'll get more refunded Ws sooner so I'd look like W Q E Q W Q ...

It'd be nice to hear from someone who understands Ryze's combos.
