Gangplank's new voice over isn't fun anymore, and here's why that's a problem

(TLDR at the bottom) (Also UPDATED for GP's Re-Rework at bottom) (UPDATED for Poppy's rework at the bottom)

Like most everyone else, i really like Gangplank's new kit. It's interactive, fun, and keeps the core of what makes GP the pirate we love. However, the new voice over raises a big question for me; does Riot understand why we like certain champions as characters? Based on this, the answer is decidedly no.

Looking back, I think that the best reworks/VUs Riot has done were Master YI, Karthus, and Nassus. What did those champions have in common? They were all bare-bones characters with about 8 lines of dialogue each and, in Nassus's case, very poorly acted lines at that (sorry traditionalists, but it's true). Riot basically rebuilt these champions from the ground up, and the results were pretty awesome. Now, let's look at the less successful reworks, with champions that had clearly established personalities.

First, the primary topic, Gangplank- I completely, 100% understand why they updated his lines of dialogue. The old lines were disconnected from anything else in the game, and could have belonged to any pirate character ever made. Even if, as i personally feel, the new lines sound like someone doing an awful pirate impression, a new voice-over was understandable. However, Riot forgot to consider if people **liked **the old voice-over, and what it was they liked about it. For me, and a lot of people, the charm of Gangplank was that you built a ton of crit and crit chance on him, and played a goofy playstyle no one else had (this is mostly kept in the kit rework). His voice lines went perfectly with this- Gangplank is a fun guy! When he signals for a cannon barrage across the map, he laughed as if no one had ever had more fun that Gangplank was, at that moment, calling in for a cannon barrage. However, the new narration completely changes that personality. I appreciate Riot's token effort to keep the laugh when he ults (though i find it distressing that they had to be reminded to keep it in), the effect pales in comparison. Listen to that 'laugh'; what exactly are we supposed to feel? With the old one, you couldn't help but smile along. I don't know what to feel now.

This is a problem that started a couple years ago with the now infamous Trundle rework. At that time, Riot had zero understanding of why people liked or played Trundle, so they essentially made a new champion who had Trundle's kit but no personality. While Riot members have clearly and repeatedly stated that they've 'Learned form their mistakes', i have my doubts. The old Trundle, who had humor and charm, is at least playable through his (now unpurchasable) traditional skin, but those will never be available again (for reasons I've never found to be satisfactory, and boil down to "Those are for in case we think we're making a mistake, and we never make those now."). Reworks never got as bad as this one again, but similar mistakes are still being made.

A more middling case is the Sion remake. Like everyone else, I think he's 'cool' now. Imposing, huge axe, well done kit, grimdark voice lines that never shut up- what's not to like? Well, for several people I know, the reason they chose to play Sion in the first place was for... the cheesy 'Ahnold' VO. I know Riot doesn't want to believe this, but a lot of people like campy charm in the champions they play. Is Sion fun to play now? Certainly. Is it still 'Sion'? Not really, just like Trundle isn't really Trundle anymore, and Gangplank isn't really Gangplank- it's Gangplank's father, from the old lore.

It's clear from these examples, and from the most recent champions, that Riot will never have a champion with a 'fun', or heaven forbid, 'campy', personality. The example Rioters will inevitably hold up is Gnar , but Gnar has no comprehensible voice lines. The closest a champion comes to this kind of charm would be Zac , but it's been years since his release. In the meantime, we've had a mindless monster, a ghost of vengeance, a vivisecting tentacle monster, a true neutral deity who cares about nothing, and a devil catfish that eats souls. Now, these are all fine champions with fun kits, but consider what kind of world this game inhabits now. There's no fun to be had- everyone is either murdered in Zaunite slums, skinned alive by pirates, hunted by void monsters, or abducted to join an ever-growing horde of Shadow Isle ghosts. A world this grimdark could be bearable if the characters are charming or likeable enough (one of my favorite manga, Dorohedoro, works like this), but where are these charming characters?

So, why is this a problem? It shows that Riot doesn't really understand, and can't be bothered to understand, why players like the champions they play.** If you ever enjoyed playing as Taric , i would be extremely concerned right now**. I guarantee he will have none of the charm he had before, and none of the new voice lines will be memorable or creative. At the very least, there was a long thread where Rioters DID ask what people liked about Taric, so there's maybe a little hope there. But what about the upcoming Yorick, Mordekaiser, and Urgot reworks? Poppy is another blank-slate champion like Nassus or Karthus, but Yorick and company have clearly defined personalities that will almost certainly not be preserved, and by the time the VOs are recorded (months before release to the PBE) it will be far too late for any change. Additionally, given the tone of the new stories Riot are writing (credit where credit's due, I love that we're finally getting lore after years of broken promises), there will likely never be a champion that's unself-consciously silly again.

TLDR: Gangplank's fun kit overhaul but joyless VO continues a pattern of VU's greatly improving kits, but destroying the personalities the players loved. The world of League has become grim and joyless, every champion who had charm is being reworked to get rid of it, and it doesn't look like Riot understands what players like about their favorite champions. Be very concerned for the upcoming reworks if you liked those champions at all.

**UPDATE **(Post-Resurrection): Having sampled the new 'official' GP VO (http://www.surrenderat20.net/2015/08/82-pbe-update.html), here are my thoughts:

I actually like it a bit better than the 'Captain' VO, if only because the lines are acted with 'emotion' and was a lot less boring. Yeah, the lines are pretty grimdark, but it resonates OK with me because the performance is more interesting and engaging. The laugh is still, at best, a C-, especially while Ulting. It sounds like he's having a little fun, at least.

So... slight improvement? But my main points still stand.

POPPY UPDATE: I was pretty happy with the Poppy rework. Her character was pretty endearing, and Riot avoided the temptation of making her another serial killer (Like Jihn! SOON* TO BE RELEASED). I did notice that there were many people unhappy with it for one reason or another, and i can only assume this is because the personality that players mentally created to match her 8 lines of dialogue had no chance of being replicated by any rework. While i'm happy with how it turned out, it's interesting to note what a vocal minority took issue with.

Riot is slowly plucking out the goofiness from it's roster. That's terrible, since some of us like playing a goofy champion once in a while. Sometimes I want to hear Sion tell other champions to "GET ON MY CHOPPA". I want to listen to GP use the word "yarr" like it's a punctuation mark.

Thank god we still have Taric talking about how beautiful and outrageous his gems are. For as long as that lasts.

These two are plenty lighthearted and they're fairly recent. There's no talk of grim futures with them, no raging dialogue, just silly voice-lines and a good time.

I think Twitch is still goofy too, with him screaming "I WAS HIDING!" whenever he pops out of stealth or his constant paranoia. It's a little more manic, but it's hard not to enjoy it.

And what about Braum ? He isn't goofy to the levels of old Gangplank or Sion, but he's overwhelmingly positive and he has some silly lines too.

I just wish Gangplank still said AHOY every now and then.

I'm one of those people who stopped whatever I was doing to yell AHOY in all chat every time he said it.

Indeed i have been worried since the Sion rework that they will remove Taric's goofiness, then they do it to Gangplank. Next thing you know Garen will be a scientist who doesn't scream his country's name at the top of his lungs(that's HERESY).

Also they keep taking away all the little buffs given as jokes. No more ninja buffs, pirate buffs, etc. ;(

Gangplank pre VU/rework was funny to play. But like most older champs, he was known for basically a 2 line gimmick. Im gangplank and I'm a pirate; YARHARHARHARHARHARHARHARHAR. That was old Gangplank.

Current Gangplank has added much more depth to his character; he not just a pirate because he's a pirate, now he's a badass pirate who rules the basically lawless Island city-state of Bilgewater through fear, brutality and instilling loyalty in those under him who do not think to question his leadership. He is brutal, but with a point. He CARVES HIS NAME IN YOUR BONES if you fuck with him. New Gangplank isn't a gimmick of a character and his VO is a testament to that.

Nasus had bad dialogue? You should really listen to that thing up close before you dare say that -_-. Point taken though with the post.

I think that really cuts down to one of the core problems of the retcon: They really don´t seem able to grasp what charm(/magic) the old lore has had and are instead eager to replace verything with some sort of soulless seriousness. The old lore had basically been a good mixture of truly dark stuff and somewhat light sillyness, now they seem to get rid of the light parts and i for one will truly miss it. Also, I´m very afraid what might happen to the yordles...

Well said.

I feel like ever since that devblog where they shut down the game's lore to do game-unrelated stories, they've just been trying too hard.

Like they're big now so they've gotta do things right. Their pirate captain has to rival Blackbeard, their world has to be the most mysterious and mystery filled, they're too good for a story belonging to a videogame anymore, they've moved on to real media like comic books and youtube shorts.

Same with all the ability reworks and new champion kits really, not that they aren't overall good, but... they're so gimmicky in a way. I love tossing down Barrel's as Gangplank, but there was something simple and easy in boosting everyone's morale and racing around fast.

Critplank used to work because you already had naturally boosted AD and movespeed, and could steroid both of them. Not because you crit the barrel and then the entire minionwave explodes and you can buy the special ult upgrade with your special plunder coins.

Same with Fiora, her kit may have been hard to balance, but at least it was easy to evaluate and had straightforward uses.

I very much feel like every recent new champion and rework, when compared to older ones, have more mechanics and less straightforward gameplay.

Just like I feel their new stories are just trying to play it up big but fails to deliver the same immersion as the lore did. There's just better settings out there to read about than Runeterra, better stories to read about than the ones I find here. I could read all that text, or I could read up on the Eberron setting, which will actually be relevant to a game I'll be playing in come fall.

It just feels too much like they're trying to do this massive overhaul on League until it's a completely different game, and if they wanted to do that they should really just be making an entirely new game instead of ripping out stuff that was there from before.

A lot of the new splash arts also give me this feel of "Now we're being proffesional, look at this generic dynamic action pose we have to prove it!"

Not that some of the new stuff they're doing isn't also really great and helps make League better. But changing their style so much (a full 180 degree turn in terms of what kind of story they're telling), changing champions so much as to actually replace them outright..

It's not very good and doesn't speak well for Riot's integrity, because what'll happen in a few years when this all seems out of date, are we then going to go into another phase of everything being slowly choked out and replaced with something new?

It's just so pointless, like the Fiora visual update, done for the sake of showing off more so than Fiora needing a visual update.

If they'd tried to polish and really work with what they had instead of change everything for the sake of being more modern and proffesional, then maybe they'd have a more even product. But whenever something's not the way they'd have done it if they were gonna start work on it tomorrow, they scrap the entirety of the idea and start from scratch on it and everything related.

When will large companies realise that people don't want lots of new innovations and drastic changes and modernisation. They want what they came for, and they want that experience expanded upon and polished. If that means hanging on to some campy VO lines, or a story made for a video game and not for a series of novels, then so be it. Better to excecute something of medium quality properly, than strive hard to turn it into high quality, bit by tiny bit.

Like seriously, if they're gonna stop doing lore for the game, change all the playable characters out for other characters with the same name, and revamp every single aspect of the gameplay until only a few themes are left behind as artifacts (until they also go the way of Karma's Shield Bomb). Then why not just start over with an actual new game, instead of trying to warp League into being that game.

It's pretty clear that either way, Riot does not have a good connection with how their characters are percieved by the players.

Then again, they also didn't know the story they were telling well enough to avoid basing major decisions in the direction of their storytelling on basic factual errors.

So I don't know why we should expect anything of the sort.

I really miss old Sion and GP.

Even without the Arnold thing, old Sion's limited speech pattern (I DO IT!) was fun and worked for the character. New Sion is the most articulated zombie of all time. For someone that is supposed to have been brought back against his will and has zero control over himself, it is pretty weird that he can form phrases that well. Really wish they had at least kept the "GET ON MAH CHOPPA" as his joke, at least.

New Gangplank's problem is mostly his voice itself. He just doesnt sound like a scary pirate, and his laugh is plainly boring. Even ignoring the lack of yarrhaha, he just sounds like a teenager tryingt to look tough.

How is Velkoz VO not goofy?

Well said dude.

Iamawalrus7/24/2015, 3:21:26 PM4 votes

I think it depends more on what you imagine for that character. For instance, Nasus' old voice is probably my all time favourite voice for any champion, just because I found it interesting considering the creature

Saminus Maximus7/24/2015, 9:27:07 PM4 votes

If you ever enjoyed playing as Taric , i would be extremely concerned right now

Waiting on that Taric VU where he sounds less like a elegent and refined possibly gay man, and is turned into baddass grimdark gem knight. The disconnect between playing a champ with pink fluffy boots talking about crushing his foes beneath his shiny treads will be real.

"You are nothing but ass, waiting to be smashed" - Taric

I wish that riot kept the quote Gangplank "Wanna know why my roger be so jolly?" By far my favorite quote in the game and now its gone forever.

Learnding7/24/2015, 10:35:33 PM4 votes

You could make a 8950 paragraph statement explaining why this and that is bad, have 985k upvotes and 90million views, and Riot still wouldn't give a fuck.

I used to love playing old Gangplank just for his voice lines. "I ain't got me ground legs landlubber!"

I love his new gameplay and new look, but I absolutely hate his new voice over and dialogue lines. They made him 100% serious and sucked the character right out of him. Everytime I played him, I would constantly talk in pirate in /all and to my team accordingly so much so that people have honored me for being in character and funny. It's harder for me to do with the new gangplank though, and I feel that as time goes on it's just going to get harder and harder to keep his old character that I loved so much alive deep inside of my soul.

Old GP was amazing. I am also the same person who loved old Trundle and old Sion for their unique characters. Goofy characters are fun, there's no fun in a super serious character going to lane spouting off grim one-liners. I wanna hear Sion's bad Arnold impersonation. I wanna hear Gangplank going, "Arrrr, matey!"

(btw, Old GP's laugh was 100000% better on ult and global)

Solideus7/25/2015, 3:20:39 PM3 votes

I'd argue making him jolly would have disappointed an equal amount of players, because his backstory was always on the grim side; having his story and aesthetics (including VO) match is important, though. GP was on the edge between grim and jolly, and the decision was made for him to lean towards the grim, for various reasons, including his role in the narrative. I love the new GP, but that's neither here nor there.

There are plenty of playful characters in the game though. Characters do lends themselves to jovial, grim or other themes because of the type of fantasy they represent; updates to those characters reflect that. MF has retained her charm through her update, for instance.

I'd argue GP and Sion has a rationale for being a little on the grim side, considering the fantasy they allow for, as opposed to Fizz and MF, whom has a rationale for their personalities and themes to fit with their fantasy. I really don't think GP and Sion entirely lack charm though; it's just a different flavor of charm. That's the whole point; the reason a few characters are less goofy after their update is to have a wide variety of appeal in the roster.

The MechE7/26/2015, 2:35:19 AM3 votes

That's not true about Poppy. Poppy is like Gangplank. She has really good lines that make you grin, like when you press q and she does that evil laugh. You can't help but grin as you know she's going to chunk someone for like 80% of their HP on her next swing.

Also, "they'll BEG for peace"

She's perhaps the most sane champion in the League too.
