Morellonomicon is overloaded

400 mana 100 ability power 20% cdr 20% of MAX mana restored on kills and assists applies grievous wounds 2900 gold

honestly as much as i like that i can take it on some of my mages that love to spam like karma and veigar, its incredibly overloaded. at this point its just about a must have on any ap mage, and now that thornmail applies grievous wounds as well, taking any healing based champions is a huge risk. my philosophy when it comes to items is that you should never feel completely safe with an item regardless of circumstances, but morello right now genuinely has no weaknesses. it increases your damage, increases your mana pool and mana regenerating power, lets you spam more, lets you snowball harder, reduces the ability of healing based champs to deal with your damage, and its not too expensive. every item should have a sacrifice, even if that sacrifice is just thats its expensive af and youre gonna spend forever trying to get it unless youre getting fed. take infinity edge for example. its a must have on a lot of adc's, but the drawback is that it provides no sustain and costs a lot so its risky to go for it early but if youre successful it pays off. morello doesnt have any drawbacks or sacrifices beyond the fact that if your team isnt getting any kills (or at least if youre not a part of any of them) the mana regeneration passive won't help you much, but EVEN THEN its worth the buy most of the time.

ill add for the record that i dont consider myself to be any sort of expert, so dont take anything i say as gospel truth because its just from my own observations and listening to other peoples complaints and praises of the item. that being said, i think morellonomicon should be a low AP item, somewhere in the 60-80 range. make the focus the utility, that way you have to sacrifice the damage boost to get the extra utility power. im welcome to suggestions and criticism just please everyone be civil, im not here for a flame war and if you try to start one with me im going to ignore you. i just want to figure out how the problem this item has brought up in the meta can best be solved.

Mages (with very few exceptions) already have no meaningful combat hp sustain, and there are zero AP carry mana regen items other than Doran's Ring.

But just to clarify: it's fine when tanks can buy Warmogs and never need to recall. It's also fine for ADCs to lifesteal and never need to recall. But mages should have to recall for low health and low mana at all stages of the game.

I have a better idea. How about no.

Bob the Toastr2 votes

It was better when we still had Will of the Ancients.

Vekkna2 votes

Yeah, there's really no excuse for why mages can't heal up if they're left to clear several waves at low hp.

But as long as they have no meaningful way to recover hp during or after combat, I think it's fine to let them not worry about mana most of the time.

I Main Swain2 votes

im not saying there should be nothing to help mages with mana, but that's a different topic. im also not saying that riot necessarily needs to nerf the mana passive on morello, but the item as a whole has too much on it, i dont think it should be both a power and a utility item especially not for only 2900 gold, i think they should focus it as a utility item. if they curbed the ap boost on it i wouldnt have a problem with them even making the mana restoring capabilities better, but as it stands right now its just not where it needs to be imo

Vekkna1 votes

So it's only ok for item 3153 item 3147 item 3812 item 3137 item 3508 item 3146 item 3142 item 3071 to be power + utility items.

Got it.

I Main Swain1 votes

last i checked those dont give almost every stat the standard champion who builds them could want. i dont mind it having power and utility, but i do mind if it has as much utility on it as morello does. if youre going to try to be condescending at least be accurate and compare morello to something that has just as much utility and power rather than a bunch of items that have some amount of power and some amount of utility.

AwesomeGuyDj1 votes

He's not saying its bad for mages to have those things. He's saying they shouldnt get that, plus high damage, plus, mana, plus CDR, AND grevious wounds.

King of Demons10 votes

Reducing the AP on Morello would absolutely destroy its efficiency.

I Main Swain4 votes

how so? it was always intended to be a utility-centered item. mana regen, cdr, and grievous wounds are the core focus of it, the ap is honestly just a nice addition. the way i see it its supposed to be a situational item, not a necessity.

LightIsMyPath2 votes

Well it would destroy mages build in general not just morello.. We need high AP on morello because there are only 2 items in the shop that match his value and both are expensive as hell. We need gw on it because there is simply no other choice. It's also the only item with 20% cdr. And the only viable mana sustain item for a lot of mages ( basically everyone who's not a spammer and that hasn't much use of hp/needs cdr more then hp).

Basically they can't touch it without touching literally every single AP item present in shop..

I Main Swain2 votes

well honestly they very much need to overhaul the mage items, right now they're pretty crapped up. also, your argument isnt that it would destroy its efficiency, its that its the only good ap item right now and mages need it, which i agree with which is incredibly frustrating because its ridiculous that an entire large category of champions should have such a terrible choice of itemization

LightIsMyPath1 votes

Indeed that is my argument. I would actually love to be able to choose /combine a build with focus on mana sustain /cdr/raw damage (AP)/utilities /artificial damage amp. Right now I am literally forced to get morello, there is simply no other option. I can't sacrifice cdr for more damage because I am not able to stack tear, even if AP on morello would get lower I would still have no use for roa because I would pay for a stat I have no need for unless I'm doing very bad (and in that scenario roa is the worst item you can get). On top of that even if for some strange reason I decided to skip sustain item (not viable but let's consider the option) I would have no items that support my choice giving me more damage in trade for not having sustain.. So I would still need morello to support my AP scalings ! Then gw.. It's absurd that manaless champions don't get the option to have it and mana champions who can't use roa or glp get it on their mandatory item without sacrificing a slot for it but at the same time have no way to sacrifice something else to acquire it early on when needed in lane.

Couldn't agree more on the need of AP items rework..

a little bit lol, but honestly the grievous wounds is a relatively small part of why i think it needs to take a hit.

Bob the Toastr6 votes

I 100% agree. They should remove the grievous wounds and either create a new AP item to put grievous wounds on or add it to a current item. Also, the mana passive is way too good, and more importantly, the mana passive on item 3802 is really too strong as well. Unless you're Ryze or Kassadin, there's pretty much no reason to take item 3070 over item 3802.

I Main Swain4 votes

thats another thing too i forgot about, i dont like when an ability on an item just disappears when you upgrade it. i think they could change morello so the mana regen is something like 25% of MISSING mana restored upon kills and assists and 15% on leveling up. idk how that would work out balance wise but its a possibility i think could work.

Bob the Toastr2 votes

I don't think it needs both passives. Not even sure why it has the mana on kill passive anyway. I think it would be alright if Morello granted 20% missing mana on level up but lost chapter needs to be nerfed to 10%. Way too much free mana from a 900g item.

Although now that I think about it, maybe Morello should give mana on level up until you hit level 10 and then give mana on kill. IDK but lost chapter gives too much mana right now.

Vekkna4 votes

Because there are no mana regen items for AP carries that aren't called Doran's Ring. Literally zero.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

There's this: item 3010 Or this (even though it isn't technically regen): item 3070

Vekkna4 votes

Great idea! I'm out of mana, so I'll just go take my entire health bar in damage so I can cast one spell combo. That guarantees full mana in 20-40 seconds, so I suppose that's technically regen.

Bob the Toastr1 votes

Manage your mana better? I'm not saying remove the mana regen from lost chapter or morello, I'm just saying it's too strong on lost chapter right now.

Vekkna5 votes

OP is saying it's too strong on Morello, which is dumb. I think you're right about Lost Chapter, though.

Frankly, I'd like to see Tear removed altogether and just make Lost Chapter a combination of the two:

25 AP 15% mana refund spellcast stacks to +250 max mana

Then have Archangel Staff build out of item 3802 item 1026 item 1027 and transform at +500 mana.

At that point, Archangel is a viable alternative to Morello for more than just niche mana-burners, and you're faced with the choice of 20% CDR now versus a shield active and better scaling.

Spoofghoul1 votes

item 3001 item 3027 item 3030 all options, all increase mana sustain hp sustain and durability and more importantly damage

item 2301 can also be used even though it's not much mana sustain but it does give wards and the tribute passive and extra gold

item 3110 Doesn't do shit damage wise but can solve some mana issues it's what i get when i have to play vs zed for example this + zhonyas + tabis + armor runes and he can suck my donger hitting a 300 armor wall

item 3100 is also an option for some mages

And there are plenty options for manaregen runes

and there is the meditate mastery

and if you ever get ocean drake you will never worry about mana again

I Main Swain2 votes

the first three require taking damage, the next one is a support item, the next two just give a decent amount of flat mana. runes are runes, not items, and ocean drake is a very bad thing to rely on as your way of not running out of mana in a game. i get your point, but mana itemization right now is just no good for ap mages

Spoofghoul1 votes

You are right ofc

but some of them give a pretty sizeable amount of flat mana which has great synergy with meditate mastery

also taking damage is something that is bound to happen in league and those items have the benefit of relieving some of the damage taken with sustain and defense so it's not all bad

That being said i do think mage itemization needs a fix

however be careful what you wish for, you might end up building those support items instead like all us tank players are doing In addition Crit now doubles as MR because rito & updates

I Main Swain1 votes

im not saying theyre not beneficial, but theyre cirtainly not a replacement for straight up mana regeneration boost. and yeah items in general right now i really hate, way too much stuff thrown in. i liked how it was when i started in season 3, basic and reliable (or at least thats how i remember it). now theres so much extra added actives and special passives and unique interractions and all this junk that nobody really asked for, and frankly its overloading the game, making it so you never have to sacrifice damage for tankiness or tankiness for damage and all this other crap. frankly i dont like the current items at all.

Joseraph1 votes

item 3070 On Ryze gives you more damage though

SwiftKitten886 votes

lol is it overloaded yes... i would love some other option to choose from... but there ARE no other viable option... we have ONE option... you have like 5...

I Main Swain7 votes

i think riot honestly needs to do an overhaul of the mage items, they're not very well balanced toward a healthy and diverse playstyle atm

Divewing14 votes

This is the real problem.

Riot can't touch Morello without shafting about 80% of the mid lane roster because AP itemisation is proper garbage

Dream High2 votes

80% is low balling tbh

applies grievous wounds

I see what you're up to

and i would have gotten away with it too if it werent for you meddling kids!

Best regards from item 3174.

[somewhere in Riot's HQ somebody sneezed] [it sounded like "MUH DIVERSITY"]

Chønklord3 votes

It only applies grievous wounds if the target is under 35% hp.

Arhkadian3 votes

oh no, dont get this item nerfed too! its pretty much the only good item that aps have left. :/

Spicy Rice2 votes

It's supposed to be overloaded as hell.

Riot wants every mage to build it as a main item.

Nomad Sol2 votes

Which core item isn't. The sad fact is without morello's mages would have some of the shittiest itemization in the game.

I Main Swain2 votes

thats a problem with the entire mage system though, honestly i think riot needs to do a lot of work on mage items.

Lauchmelder2 votes

Morellos doesn't change anything. Mage itemization is utter garbage regardless.

AirKingNeo2 votes

-15 AP to be similar to old morello.

NLGG3R BEATER2 votes

Lol the mana restoration passive is utter shit, it should proc on minions as well.

DunkinNoobs2 votes

Morello being this way is pretty much the only way to balance mages for both the mid game and laning phase. They need high mana costs and long CD's to not absolutely dominate the laning phase and they need a very strong first item to transition out of laning. Morellos fits the bill.

crzymdscntst2 votes

It's basically a necessity even on champs I would rather not build it on because of the mana restore.

Mages in-general have little to no actual sustain. (depending on how you look at it) Generally they buy flat mana items to boost potential spell quantity per time away from base. They do not really have a ton of sustain at all without masteries and runes. (Except certain champs.)

The sustain that does exist generally falls into 2 items: Catalyst (15% of damage restored as mana and 15% of mana consumed restored as health (cap 15/25) Tear/AA/Seraph's are flat mana with a tagged on mana cost reducer. (15/25%)

The rest of the item in itself is a standard AP + CDR item with grievous wounds when you look at it without the mana and restore. It looks like an item you might buy or build for your late game... but something about the mana restore and need for mana restore kicks it up into overdrive for stats you want for your gold.

TheDonar2 votes

I have to agree with you a bit. It is really becoming a crutch item for any AP champ I play now. I even started using it with Diana. She felt MUCH stronger as a result. Normally, you get 2 and a half cycles or so of her abilities before you are running out of mana. With Morello and the mana summoner spell I didn't once feel like I had to dick off for 10 minutes to get enough mana for a spell back.

It also didn't really feel like it affected her ability to kill either. Which was the thing I was most concerned about when I was going to try the experiment.

That said, other classes seem to have items that allow them to stay in their lanes and their roles longer than expected too (see Warmog's for tanks). Maybe it just needs to have another 100-150 gold added to it's cost?

AwesomeGuyDj1 votes

I wouldnt call it a crutch. Its more like "hurr durr, this is like the only good mage item along with ludens and void for good dmg MUH DIVERSITY"

Haha that is another way to look at it. It really does feel like you are just intentionally trying to throw the game if your champ is remotely AP dependent and you don't get Morello.

FirewaterDM1 votes

....Leave it alone, mage itemization is already ass between being forced to build damage or survivability (banshees' is great but zhonya's bar the active is actually trash), and they deserve one good item whereas AD's get multiple.

That being said the easiest thing to dump is the grievous wounds and to fix the problem of "ono no GW" for mages...make a GW equivalent for mages, that gives a decent amount of AP w/o the health cap. Like could be 30 AP + Grievious wounds, then build into an item w. GW, Mpen and some AP

because tbh i'd rather see the item w/o the arbitrary 35% or less health qualifier- makes GW useless on mages when they actually need the GW, like unless already ahead it's 100% useless.

I Main Swain2 votes

tbh they need to overhaul the entire mage itemization system, its complete crap
