Vladimir Builds and Role

Someone help me understand how Vladimir is played right now?

I'm looking at ProBuilds and I'm seeing a wide variety of builds. It does NOT seem like they are trying to max HP or AP exclusively. Instead, CDR seems to be the overdriving factor in the builds.

It seems that they always try to rush to 35% or 40% CDR as fast as possible (you will see that they either make a ton of CDR items, or make less but compensate either through Rune page or Masteries changes). Against AP match-ups they don't seem to mind going Spirit Visage first even though it doesn't give much AP. It seems that against AD opponents or in games where AD opponents are getting fed, they prefer to do Zhonyas first before defaulting back into Spirit Visage (maybe combining the Health with the amor to make a Pseudo-Tank while providing some AP). It seems that early DMP and Randuin buys are avoided probably because no CDR is given, though I suppose you could also go Zhonyas into Warmogs.

Now the issue is... why?

What exactly is Vlad's role in Top and Mid now? Is CDR maxed so that you can have Hemoplague up as often as possible for TP Ganks? Are you trying to damage people primarily with Q or E?

In fights do you try to dive the backline? What if you're forced to tangle with the front line?

It doesn't matter if you max Health or AP first so long as you get to 40% CDR with some combination that maximises your survival?

How do you play the new Vlad in team fights and what exactly is his role now?

Is Vlad better off in Top or Mid? As a midlaner, does he still bring enough damage to the table (now that you're sometimes doing SV first)? As a top laner, where is the utility?

the CDR is mainly for his E, so he can deal way more DPS on teamfigths. He is still played on the same role, you are a tanky DPS mage that goes in and out of battle, you wait for yoyr tanks/frontline/initiators to provide CC and then deal your damage. Ideally you don't want to dive the backline but hit as many enemies as possible with your AoE

As for the builds....Spirit Visage always has been really good on vlad since it amplifies his healing (making his effective HP higher)

So I just E and Ult to hit as many people as possible where my team is fighting? I don't have the tools to dive the backline unless they seriously mis-position?

I find that whenever I charge the backline, even if I make it... there isn't enough burst to take them down before the team collapses on me

Your role is Battle Mage, à la Swain or Karthus. Indeed, you don't have burst. But you have FAR more sustained damage than Annie or Leblanc, and you are more durable too. You have only medium range, but that's still more than the enemy Tanks. As long as no one commits for the fight, just deal the free damage you can to their frontline. Your job is weakening their frontline, and outputting as much DPS as you can, whatever the targets, without dying yourself.

here is the thing, normally vlad doesn't have enough burst to kill anyone on a single rotation, he needs 2 for squishes and at least 3 for tanks (possible more). The catch is you don't have the CC to keep your targets close to you (unlike someone like swain) and thus you need your team to provide it for you. You can go and dive the backline if you have someone like wukong or leona that will allow you to do the second rotation. otherwise you are better off playing as a normal tank, stay on the front edge of the teamfigth but never too away from your team, try to hit as many targets with your spells as possible prioritizing the high priority targets (if you can hit either 3 tanks or the 2 carrries go for the 2 carries) if they target you you should be able to soak a great deal of damage giving time to your adc to hit people, if tehy decide to ignore you then your high damage (on bursts) will wither them down.

If you played vlad prior rework then post rework vladimir is eactly the same role and positioning. Since he is stronger heals at certain points Spirit visage is pretty much a must now and tahnks to your passsive you can afford to go quite tanky and still do high damage (like old vlad). E is more effective now than old E since you can max charge it on a single cast, unlike previous E than you needed 4 cast and then keep casting it just to keep it at max charge. His pool is exactly the same. His Q is weaker than old Q normally but stronger if it is the 3rd 9way stronger). And his ult now has a heal after the duration but stil works the same as old Ult.

Ok but what am I trying to do in the game?

Am I building super tanky and generally trying to dive the backline so I can Ult + E + Q them? (but I feel like there's never enough burst to do this)

Or am I more of a damage amplification tank? Using my Ult wherever my team is fighting the most (even if it means the frontline) and then just lobbing Es at wherever the fighting is thickest?

I feel like I can never get to the backline. But your Es suck too against anyone who builds MR?
