riot should check connection quality

I've been in 10 games today that have had someone on one team or the other that have not had a reasonable connection. If riot put 1 hour of development time into it, they could detect slow speed, packet loss, out of order packets, and everything else that affects lag and and dc's. If a summoner has connectivity problems, tell them, and then do NOT allow them to play until they get the connection clean.

… or match the bad connection people in their own game

A summoner has disconnected

A summoner has disconnected

A summoner has disconnected

A summoner has disconnected

… :P

And they only play against others that have really poor connections. I could get on board with that, especially if they warn you to right as you start.

Your internet connection has packet loss and ping >500ms; you will be placed in a bad connection queue with other people that have bad connections.

Then, you'd at least have 10 people playing together that have garbage internet connections. Then both teams would have people dc'ing and unable to do tactical operation of their champions. Yeah! I like it.

So you want to punish other players for having less than stellar connections. I would guaranty your Riot does not want to do that. I don't think Riot even needs to, since having lag is a negative experience for the person who ends up DCing.

It possible that the issue is on Riot's side. yet they have millions of players. 10 games would still be in deviation.

I don't even know how the conversation of packet loss or out of order packets came up. That would assume that Riot uses a packet oriented system instead of a secure connection. (And I don't know if Riot ever said what transfer protocol they use). But if they do use a packet system. Their must be a good reason for it. (I would imagine it has something to do with the game being Real time.)

I would presume they use TCP and TCP can be a secure connection, but it doesn't mean that you won't have loss or out of order packets.

alright, I admit, I had to look up TCP vs UDP. So packet loss is still a thing, but TCP insures retransmited packets in order, at the cost of latency. Although, I can't imagine packet loss is something on Riots end. TCP is a standard protocol. The only thing affecting that is distance, and the number or waypoints packets have to bounce off of.

That's bad for multiple reasons. Riot is not dividing the player base. they don't want to. And that approach is essentially Prisoners island for bad connections. Riot said they would never implement a prisoners island. And people complained about Rank restrictions. (Which is in a lot of ways, a lesser form of prisoners island.)

The other problem is that these Qs arn't even going to be effective. Check for latency before Qing up, but it can change radically at the drop of a hat. That could be prone to happen on any public network. And even then, this only targets latency, and not lag caused by people playing on poor machines.

Correct on the TCP vs. UDP. The packets that are received out of order in TCP get retransmitted ... which means that the original packets could also come in, and the retransmitted packets ... makes for slow/lag prone connections. If course if you are getting that behavior, then you will very likely have connections that go beyond the timeout values for TCP, and then you get disconnects. (And yes, I'm an IT professional that has written software for such purposes.)

That's bad for multiple reasons. Riot is not dividing the player base. they don't want to.

They already have in some instances ... if you don't accept a match several times they will put in you a lower priority queue (don't leave and grab a drink while waiting in queue!). If they do it for one reason, they might be willing to do it for other reasons. While I admit, it is possible for someone to have lag because of playing on a poor quality machine (I have seen it) it would be fairly easy to figure that out as well. I'd be perfectly willing to accept a 10 second increase in login time to detect such things ... though machine performance could be down after that if additional apps are running.

In a lot of ways this would be a service to those that are having problems. Knowing that you have a problem is the first step in getting it fixed.

And it isn't "less than stellar" that I'm talking about ... I'm talking about 500+ ms pings. It isn't that I want to punish them, but I don't want them to punish everyone else because they just don't care. If I knew I was having 300ms pings before joining a queue, I would not join. I'm not going to punish the rest of my team because I want to play sitting in an iHop using their wifi when it is crowded (or any other public internet for that matter).

This is a team sport, not an individual playing a game (unless someone is playing custom with nobody else in the game).
