league is not about kills, it is about not dying.

Every time I've been in a losing game the single thing that stands out is that the game was lost because people wanted kills. If they had played "safe" and lived, we'd have won.

How many kills you have means nothing if you lose. Don't die!

One time my team was at their nexus and it was one of my promos, i was Utility Janna and was hitting the nexus. Everyone started waiting for them to respawn and tried to kill them. 2 of us even jamp into the fountain and died instantly the rest of the enemy team just ran us down despite me pinging to hit the nexus. It survived at around 300 hp. They pushed mid and we lost because my team was full of idiots.

Untrue.

League if about killing the enemy Nexus in the fastest way possible.

Everything else is not important.

Uiraya3 votes

"fastest" is untrue. "Before they kill yours" is more accurate.

And on that priority list, where "kill the nexus" is at #1, "don't die" is far higher than "dive a 1v3, get a kill, then hand out tons of assist and shutdown gold".

0/0 is better than 5/5 in the majority of circumstances. But people still worship the almighty KDA, and so games are still thrown left and right.

KillerKell1 votes

5/5, assuming no Assists, is a 1 KDA... that's horrible. So if they are chasing KDA and going 5/5, they are doing it wrong.

No, League isn't about not dying! Neither is it about kills. It is about Objectives. Not dying does shit for you and your team if it means you just surrender one objective after another and never play pro active. No risk no gain, and while you shouldn't go overboard on the risk, never risking anything simply gets you nowhere at all.

Most bad players i see in my games are bad because they follow that stupid don't die idea. It's those adc that are to afraid of anything so they get a total of 3AAs done in a teamfights and then run away as only survivor, ending the game with less damage dealt to champs than their support. It's those malphits that stay behind their carries till the end of the fight and then use the ult to kill a low health target and run away afterwards.

Sometimes tradeing your laife for something bigger is a good thing, even a needed thing. Drawing 3-4 man top as splitpusher and evt dying is perfectly fine IF your team can get dragon+tower or something like that on the otherside of the map, as they are 4 vs 1-2. Initiateing a fight often ends with a death for the initiator, but a won fight for your team. Unless you play a counterengage comb, ahveing the initative on your side and chooseing when and how to engage is a big advantage, but people that are afraid of dying often will hesitate to engage when the opportunity shows, as that often would mean you loose 1-2 members, but take3+from them, which leads to a powerplay on your team, leading to objective, which then lead to victory.

Sure, chaseing for kills and dying over it is a bad idea, but generally saying not dying is the key is just as wrong.

Plasma Servant1 votes

Of course it is about objectives. But you can' take a turret if you are dead. You can't get CS if you are dead. You only fed the enemy (unless executed) if you are dead. And yes, sometimes it is worth it. But when there are a ton of deaths on a team, it usually means that people have been greedy in some way ... not playing for the team, dying when they could have given a kill to a team member and lived, being so tied up in what they are doing they don't see the big picture.

One thing about 'dying less'. Dying isn't always a condition of YOUR mistake.

It's all about how the Team works with you.

Sometimes the RIGHT decision is to Hard Engage (say a Braum, or a Malphite, or a Leona). So you do. You set it up perfectly. While your team runs away.

In this scenario let us assume the ADC was out of position and easy to pick off, and that doing so didn't risk putting your ADC or APC in danger... you made the absolute 100% correct play. But the Team didn't follow.

Now with your 4 Friends on Curse, you make the call and go all in... and your Team gets an Ace, AND you live.

In one, you are an idiot who dies to much and the team rages you... in the other you are the hero who made the set up for the Ace. But the trick is, it's the EXACT same situation. Reality is you were RIGHT both times, but your team failed you in one while they supported you in another.

In other words, if you simply play not to die... then when you play with Teams that communicate and do the right things, you'll play at a Disadvantage and won't be as useful to the Team.

The key is to make the right choices for the right reasons.

I like that philosophy.

It's true. If you died: Ok, you did something wrong. You should have probably move better, kite better...I don't know.

I am trying to do this better now because I was within this stupid philosophy of not dying and because of that not improving. Try things, go for big plays ! It's like this that we will all improve: by making mistakes. We will learn how to control those champions and maybe, someday, be a pro with fantastic moves with some of them.

Ok, just don't try a new champion and doing that in rank. XD' But you know what I mean.

It's pissing me off when I am a tank, a support and the adc just playing passively, not aa'ing a lot resulting in me probably dying when engaging or, by any chance, surviving low health. So, I am trying to be agressive and active when I am playing a carry role. Showing respect for when I am on the other side. ^^

I think people are affraid of dying, of making mistakes because they think the others members of their team will be piss. Ok, if they just ran through 1v5. Yeah, it will be a good reason. But if they done well and just being outplayed by a better player on the other side. What's the problem ? For example, assassins tend to die a lot because they focus the carry. The carry will probably died but the assassin too. But the carry gone and the rest of their team using all of their spells on that assassin, the other 4th members can do something. ^^

PS: Sorry about mistakes I can make in English.

the part about trading your life for soemthing bigger couldnt be more true. many times i have won games as kennen cause i sacrificed myself by ulting a team only to see the enemy loose 4 for my one little death as my other 4 teammates pushed an won the game. its not about not dieing or getting kills its about knowing when and what kills/objectives you can get with minimal loss to the team as a whole. however no matter what your gonna loose atleast 1 person in most cases in teamfights. yet once one person dies i notice a lot of players will scatter confused as to what to do now they are down one in the middle of a fight despite in all the chaos they miss the fact the enemy team lost 2 before their team even lost their first player. and no shit why do malphs hold their ult for kills when his ult can almost garantee both their mid and adc if used at the start or during the fight instead of after (this happens way more then it should).

Congrats on developing one of the rarest super powers in the world Don Pavoni, the ability to think.

Agreed, up-voted, and I may save this to show baddies who brag about their "K/D" like that matters.

There are those who are good at capture the flag CTF, and those who are good at team death match TDM. They both have the team trying to work towards one goal, the only difference is that CTF has no one carrying their team, and even the best player could never do it alone. Id rather have CTF players in a League match on my team than TDM players.

Oh man, if only I could get it through some people's skulls.

The number of times I have seen people give first blood, teleport to a minion, immediately dive in, then give another kill (and blame the jungler) is depressing

Shonjl9 votes

To be fair, that isnt entirely a bad tactic if you are semi competent. If the enemy laner wasted a lot of resources(hp,mp,cds, smn spells) to kill you but is greedy and stays, when you come back, you can very likely kill them and entirely ruin what lead they could have had.

I lost count of how many times I would say see a top get FB but waste both their ignite and is about 50% hp but stay, only for the laner to come back and all in them and kill them, completely wasting the FB and lead they had. Sure they may have 100g extra, but say they went ignite flash(Which any offensive top laner will always have), they now have no way back to lane easily and the other laner could very easily earn that 100g back and probably smack tower a bit and leave so the same doesnt happen to them.

I also lost count of how many times I did this and succeeded and entirely saved my own ass from the enemy snowballing from that 1 kill. But again it requires being smart, if you are a moron about it, then you just ruin your entire chance of winning lane or even the game by giving 2 kills away in a matter of a minute.

Getting kills and not dying are usually a good thing, but there are plenty of instances where dying is worthwhile and even the best course of action. As any tank main would know, it is always better to go in and suicide 1v5 if it means your team makes it out instead of all of you dying.

League isn't about kills or deaths, league is about securing the best outcome in a given situation.

GenghisEmo3 votes

Actually, its even worse when ur the only one w/ lots of kill, only one to take out towers, only one to cs best, and still lose b/c allies choose to chase get kited, baited, and die, as you push down a tower.

Then they still blame loss in you. I hate being 14/1 as Ahri, 13/2 Vel Koz, 16/4 Brand, 9/3 Voli and somehow still lose when i pretty much was the only only one taking down towers.

Kowagatte1 votes

Notice how you only stated good scores with AP midlanes. I guarantee that the reason you died as you pushed down a tower is because it took longer with your low ad, and you didn't have any TEAMATES with you because you were pushing all out on a tower at a time convenient to you and not convenient to your team. They most likely yelled at you because they were trying to get dragon or was asking you to group. There is so much context missing I can't even imagine the infinite amount of possibilities you could be trying to convey with your post. It's actually not worse when you are the carry. tl;dr: Group and help other lanes rather than solo objectives, you were probably trying to solo objectives rather than work with your team.

GenghisEmo1 votes

Actually no. Even with AP mids i know when to back off. unlike my ADCs. I position better, and i carry harder than any foe or ally, and i still lose.

They go Drag when we have free towers.

There was enough context. "allies choose to chase get kited, baited, and die, as you push down a tower." That right there is enough to know they dont go for objectives.

I win lane. They lose it. I go bot or top and shtdown, and push down the towers, while they are too busy stealing blue or red buff. They chase kills all over the map instead of going for towers when it is a bloody nid running from them bush to bush. Or they have no clue how to counter a vel koz and get kited for days to then die to the Vel. While i push down a tower, forcing the opponent to come to me, i catch them out, delete them, and still take out tower. If i see enemy missing i will see how much dmg i can deal, then back off. I then recall or push other lane depending on enemy position. If all enemies go after my tunnel vision having ally in bot, i go from mid to top. If mid inhib down, i psuh other lanes (only for them to say "mid open" and then almost die when i take out tower and another inhib. It is awful to see them play so bad. Even when i play ADC, which is not my strongest role, i tend to do better than most ADCs i play with (save for the smarter ADC mains that actually play better than me and had they been my enemy would easily outplay me).

Kowagatte1 votes

I have literally zero context on how your allies played. How your opponents played. All I know is what you are telling me, and not being disrespectful or anything but from an argument stand point it's completely bias to the point where it literally can't be any more biased. My point was AP midlaners are extremely powerful especially assassins and it was ironic using strong picks and calling teammates trash.

GenghisEmo1 votes

you dont need context if ur in Silver. You see it all the time... unless, ur the ADC in question XD. But seriously, should be very common, even when ur team ahead u will see ur allies to random stuff that prolongs the game.

Kowagatte1 votes

I have never had this happen to me. I have been trashed talked by my AP mid for making stupid mistakes all the time because I am relatively bad at the game. I understand my decision and use this amazing tool called the mute button, sometime I take the flame they dish on me to motivate me to play better. Very rarely because it gets super depressing extremely quickly and I report every toxic play I come across. I have done random stuff that prolongs the game, as I image you have also done a random action that prolonged your game at some point. The thing that's the worse is seeing someone yell at someone for a mistake they understand could be avoided, they understand the mistake and will not try it again but still seeing someone unleash a massive hate speech on them for making a mistake. I don't play ranked. I have been playing league for a few years now and I just don't see myself as good enough to make it very far or to plat/diamond which is seen as a relatively good standing for current players. The irony is I see this type of toxic behavior on bad players in NORMALS where they/me are trying to become better. I didn't watch your games so I don't know what happened but next time give them some friendly advice or try not to blame it on them if they are really not trolling because it feels bad. Sometime you will play bad and someone will unleash it on you. No matter what someone is better than you, That means you are better than someone. So please think before blaming it on another player, trash talking them and please make this game an actually game that is fun and competitive. RIP GG thanks for reading, If I came off as disrespectful sorry.

GenghisEmo1 votes

i am not toxic. But i do point out issues. If they listen, i provide tips and tricks.

Thos that do listen send request and then improve. Seen Bronzies go from being 50 cs behind to cs-ing better than most of their opponents and with some champs, their main that are not my mains, they cs better than me.

So if you dont learn, that is what annoys me XD. Not that you may be bad, it is your inability to learn that bugs me. "You" not as in you, but anyone in general.

Hyppocritamus3 votes

ok, to the people who say this is false: It is completely about not dying.

The problem with "playing safe" is that those players don't know when it's safe and when it's not safe, so everything is not safe.

By "Not dying", the idea isn't pushing needlessly to get a kill. It's about not overextending just for a few extra gold. It means not chasing someone under a turret when you're low, and not facechecking the brush just because you saw a weak laner flee through them. It's about taking calculated risks, not needless ones.

It's about making your opponent die just as much as it is making yourself not die.

This is why good bottom laners don't engage without each other - solo is an unnessecary risk, and together, at the right time, is a calculated risk.

This is why, as a Sup, I leave my ADC to die. They took a risk without me, dove at a bad time, and I'm not rushing in to try to save them because their risk was uncalculated because they thirst for kills, and mine says "nope, bad time, we gon' get ganked, they haven't been poked enough to make it worthwhile, and I'm not giving 2 kills" (aside: I play Leona and E relatively aggressively).

There is a difference between aggressive and reckless. There is also a diference between safe and recklessly safe. Yes, that is a thing.

And THAT is why it's abut not dying. More specifically, not being reckless, either on offense or defense.

You know, I got placed in Bronze 3.... Anyway, I main support/Top in ranked and that basically means I MAIN SUPPORT IN RANKED. I dont know how many times weve... Iv poked people out of the lane and the ADC chases (sometimes even flashes) under their turret to try and get a kill on an enemy ADC/Sup with less than 100 HP only to get themselves killed by the turret and end up giving them the kill.

Same when Im jg, I execute a vicious gank 100-40'ing them and the laner gets in another 20% and rather than be happy they have to back, lose out on farm, take some turret chip, be set behind... my team mate dives, dies to turret fire, gives them the kill.

Mind you these stories are like 5th level and earlier stuff when the turrets can really mess you up with 2 hits, but they do this dumb shit anyway.

Mid/Late game Iv got people STILL emphasizing kills over game winning objectives. They will chase 2 people who flee a lost team fight ALLLL THE WAY up to their base wall, only to get caught out by the people who died, respawned, and swarmed by people with homeguards, when we could have probably taken 2 turrets, or a turret and the dragon.

The problem is the mentality of the people who play this game, the both want to win, and at the same time do things that dont help the team win. I actually mentioned why in that sentence though what the problem is. This is a team game, most people are pretty self absorbed, and dont function well in a team environment.

People want to "carry" the team, and for that they need gold, and kills get gold. So they short-circuit their logic of winning the game by focusing on a thing that has them diving turrets and giving the enemy team kills thus losing them the game.

Plasma Servant1 votes

My "main" is Malzahar ... yes, I've had games where I get lots of kills, but I don't really care. I scare the opposition out of creeps and build gold with cs. I am patient, and the times I get killed are usually because he is so slow and easy to gank. What I also notice is that many games I've won, I've done the most damage to champions had the highest cs on the team, and had fewest kills. Sure, I've had games where I've had tons of kills as well ... and it wasn't me that did that, but others on the team that made it possible, but it isn't my goal. I push lane.

KitsuneTrickster2 votes

THANK YOU! It is about objectives and pushing the advantage, not chasin like lunatics and dieing. We got baron, disengage and push lanes. We are doing drag, stick at drag when it has 1000 health and finish it asap. Theres a million other ways to be super effective in a game other than doing damage to champions. Yet still, people point to the damage to champions stat as their gauge for how good someone did. Anytime someone does that to me i just automatically assume theyre a shit player who doesnt actually understand league. When did this game turn into team deathmatch? Where all that matters is how many kills you get? Everyone is sooo greedy for kills. Roaming around a visionless jungle and dying b/c you wanted that raptor camp isnt worth it.
