Gaining gold as a support feels horrible

Leave it to people trying to find loopholes from csing to ruin things. Why does attacking still take up a charge of Spellthief's even if it doesn't grant gold when your adc is backing? What if your adc tends to back too much because they get poked out? It's irritating, I can't get gold from cs because it blocks the passive preventing me from completing the quest, and I can't get gold when I alone am healthy and able to hold the lane. Even more, attacking itself still takes a Spellthief charge, but you gain nothing out of it?? But the other two enemies who are doing well picking down my adc to the point of backing, and they get gold for hitting the tower, and me of course, so supports are also forced to back or get shoved and dove in on with virtually nothing to do and horrible exp gain.

Please revert the support item buffs. There has to be a different loophole to getting around whatever they were abusing top lane. But please don't punish all supports just to make laning simpler for the regular top lane.

I feel like everyone who thinks this didn't play back in season 3. Gold for supports was practically none existent back then and it is so much better now. I think what I see supports average in gold is fine currently.

Why don’t they just make it where only 1 person on each team can buy a support item?

(I mean support item as: Relic Shield, Spelltheif, Ancient Coin.)

What if only the person who could take a support item was the support. Boom. Mind blown. Super fucking complicated.

I agree with this. It's not about making less gold, it's about it being a lot less fun and more predictable now, having to do it while being on a leash.

Agree. I'm not even sure the should have changed it in the first place. I can't imagine a top lane spell theif was unable to be countered. However, if it was the case then I understand.

I think it was a cool idea that had the opportunity to change how the lane is played. And let players come up with a way to counter it.

I get the feeling that they never considered people may try that and once they did, Riot seemed miffed that they tried. I mean it's what is cool (for me) about this game. The opportunity to find an alternate way to win given the tools available.

I'd like to know if Riot wants us to come up with cool alternate builds and strategies, or do the just want us to play a meta defined by them.

It seems a bit dishonest to tell the player base to "Play your way, except for this, oh and this, and that too."

Also, while I like the pro scene I'm quite tired of champs, builds and strats being patched out based on pro play.

It wouldn't bother me in the least if they handled the pros different from the rest of gigantic player base.

Wait.... supports get gold?

Honestly, my biggest issue with support items in the past was the Relic Shield becoming basically useless if you fall behind in lane.

It encourages snowballing, something that Riot said they wanted to discourage. As a melee tank support, if my ADC was getting poked out of lane, it felt terrible to not be able to proc my relic shield stacks. I've had occasions where I haven't gotten my wards until after 15 minutes - which is INCREDIBLY late for a support quest to complete.

I'm glad that the change has brought Spellthief's and AC into line with the mechanics of the Relic Shield, as they all require proximity to the ADC now. I still think there is a better method for making all of them work about evenly, without making any one of them feel awkward (which the Spellthief's change kinda does with the charge consumption).

While I hear you, I've actually been finding myself ahead of where I used to be at any given moment since they increased the amount of gold per proc. I might just be lucky and have had a ton of winning lanes so it's easier to time backs with my adc, but I've been enjoying the change.

What about this idea I am literally pulling out of nowhere this very second?

For Spellthiefs, Consuming a charge still grants gold Reduce the gold value gained off of each charge. Increase the charge cap Reduce the time it takes to accumulate a charge Make it so you only accumulate charges while near an allied champion.

This would make it so you can stack up charges while laning with your carry, and potentially still have some unused when they are not in lane. Even if you run out of charges, you will not miss out on as much gold for each charge you would have otherwise accumulated, and when they return you can begin accumulating charges more quickly.

Alternatively, .. just significantly increase the charge time while there is not an allied champion nearby.
