Just a reminder, do not blame your support for what is not their fault.

I just got done with a game as Kat Support (Yes, it IS a thing) with an Ezreal adc, Jayce mid, Lee top, and Rengar jg. Now everything was going just fine early game, Ez and I put on the good poke to Jinx and Nami, but the moment early game ended and Nami started showing up mid, Jayce started getting toxic towards me for not giving him an mia. Now I would like to remind you all that bot lane is a duo effort. Yupp, I didn't give an mia, but neither did Ezreal. It is not solely MY fault. The next problem I encountered came from both Lee and Jayce over twenty minutes in, I got kills. Now, normally this wouldn't be a problem, laning phase is over and I'm Kat. Feed me. However they seemed to think that it was appropriate to shut me down and call me various names and accuse me of not feeding them (as well as Jayce accusing me of feeding Viegar with one death to his two) and ks'ing them, telling me I'm support my job is to feed them. If I were not Kat support and the ONLY ap damage on that team, that would be fine, that would be my goal. However, in team fights, a kill is a kill, it matters not who gets them. By the end of the game after enduring countless insults and accusations, I just did not care a single bit about that game anymore. I was done. That doesn't mean I didn't try until the end, but my will to win was gone. Please people, do not be DB's. I didn't feed Viegar, Jayce did. Your support is not to blame for every problem you have a your game. The moment blame is thrown, morale is gone.

Lol Kat support is "Not" a "thing". In order for it to "be a thing" it needs to "be a thing" people actually do, and they don't.

That being said, "support" is a relatively loose term. Any competent player can go bot calling "support" and dominate the lane by setting up kills for the ADC by chunking the enemy. That doesn't make them a "support" though. Kat offers very little to her lane mate. Her only real "support" is to chunk and scare the enemy, maybe deny farm.

But she can't protect, defend, cc, heal, buff, or anything for the lane mate.

I had a friend who would run (pre-rework) Evelyn as support. It "worked" because she could deal out a ton of damage in short surprise bursts. After a few BOO! moments and chunking the enemy. I'd be set up for an easy kill or gank. And at the time she was one of the fastest champs (pre-hecarim) so he'd get mobo boots and throw down 5 wards around the jungle before coming back to lane after backing and had the speed to do it safely. Making him invaluable to the team. But any skilled ADC/Support knew that if they locked 1 of us down they could kill us because neither of us had any real way to defend one another. And any skilled support knows that picking a carry/assassin in a support roll means that during team fights your damage is going to be gimped due to lack of gold. And your team is going to lack a lot of those "support" abilities a typical support would bring. CC, Heals, Buffs, Debuffs, etc.

Troll picks like this work, because people are usually really bad at adapting.. not because their "a thing".

Edit: I forgot to mention; We experienced the same reaction. Because we were doing something different, anything bad that happened whether or not we were involved somehow boiled down to his decision to run Evelyn Support. And ultimately the game got lost due to a lack of morale and teamwork not because Evelyn had done anything wrong.

This. I probably worded it wrong, I just wanted my point across. Kat support is a choice that focuses on denying farm and constantly landing her q because she has no limits to her abilities. The way I build Kat is definitely a weaker version of her potential, but I understand she doesn't have the "requirements" of a support. I use exhaust on her for the first and foremost form of cc, and I build a Frost Queen's Claim for the ap to do some decent early game damage, and another form of cc. Granted there's only so much cc I can build from items without making her an effed up bundle of joy that does no damage. I mean I try to adapt and create the best opportunities for my adc as I can, but like you said. Anything bad happens, it's on me. No matter what.

Genreninja2 votes

Yeah, you sound like a person who can pull off non-conventional sports fairly well. Especially with your acknowledgement of adding CC through items. Some players don't think about the amount of support that can be gained from items, or how much lacking resource management adds to your ability to harass.

But I guess it comes with the territory. Bend the rules, and it's your but on the line no matter what.

I wish it wasn't so though. I love unconventional Meta-Bending choices and have FUN playing them even when I lose. But finding like minded individuals to play with is somewhat difficult. If you ever wanna duo que hit me up :D

My friends have commented something like that, asking if there's anyone I can't support with. I appreciate that :)

I mean, I understand I'm at risk if it's ranked, where winning actually really matters LoL but in a normals game...when people coem at me all because of my pick. I mean I play Team Builder, you knew what I was doing...you accepted me into your lobby.

But yeah most definitely, I would love to find people who can understand what I do and not nitpick me.

Supports also aren't blameless. You're expected to have more map awareness than your ADC, and frankly, you probably did KS. Any champion as a support will do significantly less damage than when fully farmed.

Stopped reading after Kat support.

Why on earth would you choose a Katarina support? There's pokey/shielding/bonus ms Karma, a healing/tank Taric, stun-&-pull to win Thresh & Blitzcrank, but nope, you had to go Katarina. Did you got rejected by mid and still stubbornly goes "emergency mid" support Kat?

Man I was gonna believe you til I read "Silver 2". You chose a champ who supports like -100% at the time. Yes, you may have the sightstone to help for the visions, but you do not have the power to give your team the advantage in power.

I don't care what your thread say, I only need to give you 3 advices:

  1. Pick a REAL supportive champ.
  2. Ward better (drag river is best, that bush between mid & baron too if you got the time)
  3. Mia is an mia. Your bot lane is responsible for the absence of your own lane opponents. Still best to ping an mia whwnever needed, even if unecessary. And you're the support. If it were me, I would still mia whenever needed. No mia and my mid is dead? I'll admit the blame.
Sterek is Love3 votes

I chose Kat because I wanted to. You act like I committed a crime. It wasn't even a ranked game. Completely missing the point. I always have every ward I can out thank you very much, and to top it off my rank does not dictate how you can judge me, that is absurd. I will play more according to meta when I play ranked games, but if I choose to play Kat support in normals, I will play her support. Don't bother commenting if you're just gonna be another Ass.

BeatzBoyFTW3 votes

Even as a Silver 5 myself, I can understand more sense than you do. If you did ward out much for the team, then it should be okay. I was judging that Kat supp does not work because when you said "it is a thing", you make it sound as if it is valid for any type of elo matches, which makes it sounded retarded.

Doesn't matter what I say. Just make sure you know what the hell you are doing for the team instead of thinking for yourself.

Sterek is Love2 votes

The fact that you brought up my rank, when you're not even higher than I am...irks me. Quite a bit. I ALWAYS, ward. I've studied the best locations to ward, I've watched these videos and that of the "pros." I know how to ward so my team has vision. Kat support is a strategy. Any "non-meta" play is a strategy, let's be real. It's a thing because it's known, it's not completely and utterly forgein as say, Janna jungle. A pick that is just totally out there, even to people like me who like to break meta for the hell of it. What bothers me the most is that you didn't even continue reading before you judged me, I was the only ap damage on the team. Even as support, when the enemy is going heavy armor, I'm the only one making any dents, if I have to convert to playing a little more damage oriented to cover the magic damage, I will. Either way, my thought process is on my team and how we can win. If that requires me to pick up their slack in their stupidity, then so be it. But in no way did I ks anyone, a kill is a kill in a team fight, the goal is to kill. Period.

Alljoy3 votes

I've never tried a Kat support before. I sort of like occasionally making picks that break the meta like Ahri or Syndra support. It's silly but I feel like it forces me to be more creative with how I can support and I'll admit, it's fun.

Sterek is Love2 votes

Ahri and Syndra support aren't foriegn though. I play them in support a lot. It's quite fun. Syndra support especially is more known, no one really questions that one. But Ahri support I'm comfortable enough with to take into ranked games. It's just about knowing the champ well, and having good mechanics. If you can manage those, it'll all work out. (And reading your enemy).

Alljoy3 votes

I think another thing that's probably important is a lane partner who doesn't instantly resign to a lost lane just because you have a non-meta support.

Then again, that's probably why I've never tried it in YoloQ.

Sterek is Love2 votes

Agreed. It's a risk I don't really wanna take. Too many trolls in low elo that would call me a troll and just be an epic douche.

Alljoy2 votes

That, and the risk that people in YoloQ tend to be uncooperative as it is. Plus it does require some synergy with someone willing to go along with it.

Sterek is Love1 votes

Very true. In my opinion she works best with an all in type of adc like Jinx for instance, when she's put on enough poking and she's ready to give the kill, I've had times where the adc is just off away farming in their own little world...missing out on a double and they get away. But that's bot lane, synergy is key in bot.

I LOVE the "Break the Meta" series by Solwolf on Youtube. And enjoy going non-conventional places with champs. You learn their limits that many "mains" never know the champ has.

That series is about unconventional BUT viable champs. Not about going AP Riven/Zed or botlane Kat. It's about viable champs in different roles than normal, not doing troll shit.

Sterek is Love2 votes

The fact that you think this is "troll shit" tells me all I need to know about you as a player. Obviously playing someone who is full on ad like Vayne and building her ap is a complete waste, that series isn't about that. He takes champs and plays them in different roles that are not "normal." Katarina support fits that. This is not "troll shit" as you so childishly put it. Grow up, and learn that the word viable, is a hell of a lot bigger than noobs like you like to think it is. Viable and meta, are not the same thing.

I could have worded that much better, sorry.

Otherwise, what I was trying to say is it's still about playing to that champion. While some champs can be put in crazy places (Jinx Jungle, AD Leona top, Onhit Nami, Thresh + Fiddles bot), those were still done to use that champions strengths. As a support, all kat brings is reliable Q poke and damage, which makes her only really good for scaring enemies and denying cs. While it could (and judging by you, can) work, other champions have greater damage pre 6 (and without their ult), better poke, and more supportive qualities then Kat. She could be used for a kill lane, but other champions could do that much better (Xin Zhao or Pantheon, Diana, LeBlanc). So while she is viable bot, it's closer to the way AP Xin Zhao is viable (the enemies are somewhat bad and don't play against it, and don't change their playstyle at all for it).

Genreninja1 votes

I'm with Leio on this one. There's a difference between Optimal and Viable. Botlane Kat is not optimal, but is viable.

AP Zed/Riven is not viable.

You're not playing Kat support, you're playing bot lane Kat. Support implies you actually have something to offer to your lane buddy.

Support are generally ones to bring a fair amount of CC to a teamfight to protect and let your carries to their thing. Also, as a support, it is somewhat your job to keep an eye on the entirety of the game, if someone in your lane is MIA, call it. Thirdly, as a support an other of your job is making sure your ADC is getting fed, the more kills you take, the less he/she has and this hurts your team in the long run considering the other team has a real support. A support should be able to work with low gold income unlike Kat that requires her to be fed to get going.

Taking this into account with your team comp, you gimped your entire team and were probably one the main reasons if you lost the game.

Honestly I'm just thinking you got "pissy" you didn't get mid and just went with a mid laner anyways not caring what the team needed.

Sterek is Love1 votes

LOL this was Team Builder. You need to gtfo. I didn't take anything from my adc, he got his kills, I got my assists. Please think before you comment.

Katarina Support works best versus Nami. It is the one time you can safely pick Katarina support, it can work vs others but it is much more risky.

Any time you pick anything unconventional people will look for the first chance they can find to cry and blame you for everything. Ignore them, play your game and have fun.

Sterek is Love1 votes

Thank you. Someone who doesn't just try to shut me down because I pick something out of the ordinary. And yes, playing Kat support against tanks like Leona is just impossible.

You also need to make sure that you are only playing Katarina support with adcs that have escapes like EZ, Lucian and Caitlyn. If both you and your adc can escape and the enemy support cannot hard engage you only need worry with jungle.

Katarina Jungle is really fun also, you will have to recall at level 3 after your second buff no matter what runes or masterys you take. This is the weak point of Katarina Jungle, if you get your first 2 buffs and level 3 without being invaded you are Gucci (start w and max w). Pick Katarina jungle when you have a top laner with great initiation like Maoki. Katarina Jungle works ok vs farming junglers with low early kill power. You should not pick Katarina Jungle vs Lee or other early game junglers.

Just because some hotshot streamer or LCS / OGN / whatever player didn't do Kata support yet , it doesn't mean she can't be godly support .

I have played numerous ranked games as Akali support and it works pretty much the same way as Kat , with slight mechanic differances ofc .

People call you troll / bad / useless and then you carry them as a support , you get reported by the ADC for "ks-ing" and whatnot . Since it's

YoloQ , I feel like I can play whatever champ I like as long as I support my team and fill the role slot that is open .

What I'm saying is , do your thing and don't let pseudo intelligent people discourage you .
