Swain seems to win every teamfight he enters because of the thousands of damage in aoe his ult does while he is invulnerable. What are we supposed to do when he is the only damage threat and he activates zhonya to be unkillable in the middle of our backline. He just walks in because he has 4000 hp and he gets armor from zhonyas.
Disengage.
Also kite him. It's very dificult for him to make it to the middle of the team fight unless he has flash.
Have the backline disengage. If he's the only damage threat, like you said, you shouldn't have any problems with the beefy front line tanking the other 4 members while waiting for his Stasis to end.
This is assuming that, as you said, he's their only source of damage and he's in the middle of the backline in his Zhonya's active.

Don't you think if the AoE damage during hourglass was the problem with Swain, then Karthus would be even more broken? Defile does like twice as much DPS. Or what about Fiddlesticks?
