Can someone explain to me why the Hecarim E change was a buff?

Context: I'm a S2 Hecarim main who influenced me to climb the ladder yet another year because he carried me into Gold in this just past preseason.

http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=SquishyTentacles reached a peak of 65% win rate v 7.00KDA around 40 games with this guy, BEFORE the change.

I don't know how to use his E anymore, it used to be such a reliable ability for me to gank with, but now the knockback scales with duration. It knocks them back SO far now, that it's gotten me killed a couple times becuase I fly in there with them. It ruins ganks that normally would just displace them reasonably, and now displaced them massively. It has TOO much of an impact (for good or for worse) with ult combination (E+Ult Positioning + Knockback).

I've lost so many kills that I normally would have gotten by this knockback, and to play around it to position it to my liking is extremely difficult. A massive displacement is really good situationally, I agree, but it's difficult to aim, coordinate and actually pull off.

As a Hecarim main I to was skeptical at first, then I realized its amazing. Especially if you use him as a jungler. You can ram into over-extended squishies and send them flying into your tower. It's a subtle change, but it raises his skill cap and potentially makes him more powerful, if you know what you're doing.

I agree so hard with this. His E is insane now. Like I only use it when there's a wall that I can clearly push them into to stop the knockback. It's so far now, and very easy to isolate yourself from your team that cannot keep up with the horse.

After writing the above post I remembered something else - you can also use his Devastating Charge to peel for your allies.
