Vel'Koz finds strength in.... Manganese? VEL'KOZ THEORY!!!!
So I was doing a little research on base AD values of champions on the League Wiki when I couldn't help but notice that Vel'Koz's base AD was a little strange compared to others. It showed his AD as 54.937875658, which was awfully and strangely precise, even for the most precise balancing. I definitely figured something was up when I looked at the number beside it for the AD gain per level, which read as 3.14159265359, which everyone with the most basic understanding in math should recognize as pi.
I googled 54.93 to see if I could get the inside joke of Riot's mystery # on Vel'Koz, and I came up with something a little random but not surprising. The element of Manganese's atomic mass. However the precise atomic mass of Manganese didn't correspond with the AD value, as it was 54.9380, a good .0002 value from the mark.
For those who don't know what Manganese is, here's a quick brief overview. If you want more, use the fabulous engine known as Google. Manganese is a metal found in the periodic table with a solid phase. It's primary use in everyday life is steel production, and use in alloys. So what does this have to do with Vel'Koz?
SO HERE IS MUH SHORT AND SIMPLE THEORY:
After doing a 15 minute lengthy intricate research session on this element, I learned that Manganese was added to iron helmets in the early 19th century, as manganese made these helmets harder, without affecting the malleability. This meant the helmets would be stronger, and soldiers would be better protected against most forms of conventional warfare.
Until now.
When Vel'Koz was first introduced into the world of Runeterra, he was hungry for knowledge, and the first thing that was shown being assimilated by his laser was an individual, a native of our dimension. This was in the Ve'Koz First Contact trailer, and our unlucky adventurer accidently stumbled upon ol' Vel who just wants some knowledge. Unfortunately the standard norm of the Void and of Runeterra differ in that in Runeterra, there are more morally just ways to obtain information than to disintergrate them with your eye laser, but I digress.
Anywho, when our soldier friend was pinned down to be the first victim of Vel'Koz's quest for knowledge, every viewer assumed that it was the HUMAN being disintegrated, but if you look closely at :40 in, the soldiers head was turned so that he wasn't facing the eye. No, it was the helmet that was disintegrated, and the first piece of knowledge obtained by Vel'Koz regarding the natives of Runeterra was that they used Manganese to protect themselves, and trusted their lives with Manganese.
So why not fight fire with fire?
Doing the best he could with his advanced anatomy or whatever, he emulated the strength of this element into his most basic, his weakest attacks, but nobody is perfect. Vel'Koz got as close as he could, but was stuck with the molecular toughness at the ten-thousandth level, thus the .0002 value difference.
That is my Vel'Koz theory, thank you for reading!
