Which is more unbalanced: The Drave Issue or the Janna Issue?
This is just a thread to contemplate which balance issue is worse: champions with generally low win rates, but amazing players can make these champions impossible to win against, or champions with generally high win rates across all levels of play.
The examples I chose to represent each problem are Draven and Janna.
For Draven, when he's at his best, there's almost no one who can stop a person who's perfected his/her gameplay on this champion; he wins every trade in lane, he never gets caught out, and his DPS is significantly higher than any other ADC. Essentially, he's the best ADC if he can be played perfectly. However, the skill-floor to reach this level of incontestable strength is so high that reaching it is nearly impossible, making his overall win rate generally lower than most other marksmen.
For Janna, nearly anyone can pick her up and understand how to properly utilize her within a few games. There is still a higher skill ceiling, but the skill floor is set low enough that the general playerbase can win with her more often than they lose. This, in turn, gives her one of the highest consistent win rates while still maintaining a high play rate.
With all this being stated, which is worse? Does a champion like Draven need to be nerfed because he's impossible to beat when played perfectly, even though most players can't ever reach that level of oppression? Does Janna deserve to be toned down because most people are able to win more often with her than other champions?
Both of these are balance problems because nerfing either one of them causes problems for the game. Nerfing the former means making the champion not worth anyone's time due to the "x amount of skill = y amount of power" ratio not being favorable for the player. Nerfing the latter risks lowering a champion's maximum potential to below what is necessary to even be playable.
Think of it this way:
There exists a Power Curve that dictates the strength a champion needs to be considered playable. Draven generally falls slightly below this Power Curve at his normal potential, but his maximum potential is significantly above the power curve to the point where no other champion even comes close. Janna's normal potential is slightly above the Power Curve, and her maximum potential is only a little higher than that.
Nerfing Draven would put his maximum potential only slightly above the Power Curve, but his normal potential miles below it. Nerfing Janna would put her below the Power Curve entirely, meaning there's never a reason to play her at all.
This is why I ask what the general consensus is on which issue is worse, sense it's pretty difficult to tell once you really start to think about it. What do you guys think? Please discuss this below. Thanks for reading!
