Items that warp a class
From the patch note discussion of Luden's:
> If you want to take that situation one step further, a very strong item in the ecosystem starts to warp champion viability around "who can use that item the best," rather than the other way around (see also: old Challenging Smite top lane, or old Feral Flare).
ISTM that another illustration of this principle is
(less extreme, but lasting much longer without being addressed). Any crit build must include it, but also, because it's so strong, any marksman build must include it and be a crit build, and anyone whose kit doesn't work great with it becomes less viable.
There was a time when Riot could unironically put the Marksman tag on Teemo. He autoattacks people from range and it hurts (or at least it used to). But the problem with that is that his main "steroid" is actually an onhit, which doesn't synergize with crit the way a pure stat steroid does. So an itemized Teemo doesn't keep up with an itemized Tristana, or Draven, or Graves. Because there isn't any other itemization path Teemo can pursue that will even approach the power of crit with
.
Less extreme examples that have also fallen out of the meta because they don't work as well with crit:
