An idea for Athene's Unholy Grail

item 3174 is rarely built since its last redesign. As a support, I feel like it's hard to fit 20% CDR on a single item into my build because it will push me over cap, and I want there to be more alternatives to item 3107 every game. In order to avoid an overall nerf to the role, I think underused alternatives should be buffed instead of Redemption being nerfed.

So my idea for Grail is to have it be more focused on the identity of its new passive by changing its recipe to item 3028 + item 3114 + item 1052, reducing the CDR on the full item to 10% and giving it 10% heal/shield power in addition to the Blood Charges passive. Base mana regen would be increased to 100% (sum of the components), which with Harmony would mean slightly more health regen too.

The intent is to have an overall buff (because it's weak right now) and also be more focused on the kind of kits that like Blood Charges, rather than generic mage stats. It would also allow you to opt for an Idol first buildpath, if that's the kind of power you're looking for in the early game (of course that would be riskier than chalice first if you're taking harass).

i just want it to have more AP

it's supposed to be for mage supports who do damage and have good shield/heals, karma, bard, etc. not a standard support item

Or Riot could try to move it back to being a midlaner item.

If this item was a heal/shield power item, I'd actually build it.

Yes.Please reduce the CDR. It hurts most build paths because of CDR overload.

Athene's Unholy grail would be a perfect candidate for spellvamp... JS...

I build it on prettymuch anything that I take Bond of Stone with that doesn't have innate ally heals/shields. It's quite good for burst healing on top of the on hit.

I think the item is already great. It has a mix of ability power and magic resist which promotes aggressive playstyle and I find the heal always noticeable.

The reason you rarely see it is because people believe redemption and locket are necessary every single game regardless of what support they play. Crowding out athenes and other items.

Before making Athene able to compete with Redemption, make it usable by more champions. Right now you have to be Sona / Ivern to excell with it (super low cd on decent damage / shield abilities), or Karma / Lulu / Bard / Nami to be able to use it once in a while - not enough to worth a buy.

Soraka / Janna have no incentive to build this at all.

The item has an excellent design (interact with the other team, get rewarded by addind up to one free Soraka lvl 5 W to your next heal/shield) but the blood charge generation system is dumb. To load 250 charges, you need to deal 1250 premitigation damage (20% converted into charges). Who does that?

And the charges don't care if the damage is inflicted by abilities, by aoe abilities, by autoattacks. For example, autos should be rewarded way more than 20% to give them a meaningful usage later in the game. Enchanters (and maybe mages) are probably the only class that don't autoattack past level 13 because your don't dent anything and get blown if you get close enough to try it. Unless you have an incentive to do so as Bard / Sona / Karma and maybe Lulu (unless you pix'd someone else and... well you did it actually).

The entire issue I have with Athene's Unholy Grail has to do with Chalice being an MR item. It's still like it was made for mid lane despite being pushed down to support. If they took away the MR aspect of it but buffed the mana regen portion, I would be buying it all the time on single shield champions.

Athene's is awkward because unless you do consistent damage you don't get charges but if you do burst damage you get too many charges and it becomes inefficient to burst. I think they should just change the passive heal to charge over time and reduce its cdr.

30 ap 60 mr (stats are somewhat the same) 10% cdr. 5% movement speed. new effect: gain bloodcharges from being damaged as well.

new build path item 3113 +item 3028 +X gold

That maybe the intent, but in practice, isn't it just only going to be buffing Ivern instead?
