He hits level 15 and has gotten a pentakill in intermediate bots. So I figure we can play a Normals game for the first time and I hop on my level 15 account to make things fair for him.

We get 3 teammates who spam pings on him and** ALL-CAPS RAGE AT HIM THE ENTIRE GAME LIKE THIS (ping)??????????????????????????????????????????(ping)** because he's not fighting Kalista they gave 29 kills at bottom lane.

In their all-caps included "KILL YOURSELF FUCKING RETARD N----G----R YI"

Seriously? This is how the community acts at low levels? My dad thought it was hilarious in contrast of how nice the people are in Bots games. I figure the kids had to have been a 3 queue of perm-banned bronze kids anyways. But really though, this is how the community still acts.... I see nothing has changed since I left the low levels and ranks.

Unfortunately I cannot name and shame, because those people need to be named and shamed. He did not report them after the game because he wasn't yet introduced to that function of the game.

EDIT: He was playing with my brother last night because I was watching the election, I looked over his shoulder and guided him.

There is not a single online game community that isn't like this.

There are plenty of communities with some form of toxic behavior, but to be fair, League of Legends was voted the most toxic online gaming community in the world.

Because it's the biggest, so it has the most voters.

Just goes to show no matter what is said, there is always a group of simple minded people saying it cant be done.

I didn`t get this joke. League got a bigger playerbase than all those games combined (yes, really)

IMO Dota2 with their lack of surrender and freefloating serverjuumps and namechanges are ALOTmore toxic. Never met a league/dota2 player that said otherwise.

Anidan1 votes

I played both, and in my experience (key word) League was a lot worse.

That said, I've heard some pretty nasty horror stories from both sides that I never had to personally experience. Surrender votes not working so they made swastikas with wards when you could buy as much as you wanted, or feeding the enemy team so the game ended faster in theory. And on DotA2, you have someone like Io teleporting teammates into the enemy fountain or into the middle of the enemy deathball, and Nature's Prophet stop giving a shit and just start cliff-jungling.

That's not even getting into Lifestealer just going into an ally and never leaving them, or Pudge, or Vengeful Spirit, or Force Staff and so on.

League players are just as toxic as DotA2 players, DotA2 just lets you have more tools to be salty with, for better or worse.

One experience I did have, however, was fairly recently. It was an Abyssal Underlord starting up his ult. We thought it was directed toward the second top tower, since we pinged it to be pushed, but instead he took 3 people + himself to the enemy fountain. Fun times... Actually it did get a lot funner because that watershed moment marked when all of us stopped taking that match seriously, because that was ridiculous enough to break us. It was a normals match though, so it wasn't high stress, so take that as you will.

Uhm League has been the largest online game since 2014

Don't know about the numbers on EVE or Overwatch, tbh, but LoL is a LOT bigger than all of WoW, Dota, Diablo, StarCraft or HotS.

EVE has about 150k subscriptions with nearly half of those being secondary accounts for miners. Overwatch is getting bigger and may supercede League in around 2-3 years if their growth continues

League has about 100 million monthly players according to Forbes: http://fortune.com/2016/09/14/league-of-legends-100-million/

Overwatch has 20 million REGISTERED accounts.

The monthly players metric is more accurate as it reflects active players and still vastly exceeds the number of total overwatch accounts.

i have like 5 smurfs, 2 on NA 3 on EUW

RavenMagus2 votes

Starcraft used to be bigger, but it's dead now. Most of its community moved on to League or Hearthstone.

DeathBurst2 votes

I'm one of them, but I don't think that even at its peak SC2 was as big as LoL currently is. Is there any official figure about the number of active players on SC2?

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

Are u for real_? Eve only has around 300k active players if at all. And most i guess are just smurf accounts considering this game is basically an economy simulator. World of Warcraft the biggest MMO yes but that'sit. Overwatch dunno. Isn't Starcraft already dead?

God dammit this prize pool argument really sucks. First of all: League is FREE. Completely FREE. If riot would charge a monthly fee then yes they might have more money for that. In fact riot doesn't even make money with LCS for example that just shows you that Riot is not only about money. BEsides you seem to forget that Riot is still a startup and does not have big ass decade old companies like Blizzard, EA, Valve as their sponsor. If Dota would have to sustain itself they could not pay ridiculous amounts of prize pool moneyof 10 million+.

1 800 Top Lane1 votes

You realize that Riot made over $624 million last year alone right?

You wouldn't care about money if you had that much either.

A game that uses way more than 6 buttons.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

8* a lot of people use attack move and stop button too.

Although on second thought it might be 13-15 counting emotes and stuff.

Spoofghoul1 votes

And it's also the most toxic let's be honest

An average of 173 cases of cancer are diagnosed every game and the only treatment offered is to go kill yourself.

Have you ever played CoD? That is just league levels of toxic in voice chat.

Shieldbro1 votes

I don't think you can rage much in shooter games, I only played cs 1.6 online and it's like you don't give a fuck if your team is dead, just go rambo and have fun, also it doesn't mean just because they have 15 more kills that you can't do shit, you can still kill everyone solo.

Thankfully, I managed to bypass the toxic lower ranks.

the important question to ask yourself is -

did you report the players?

and

does your father understand why so many young people are killing themselves/becoming depressed/taking anti-depressants/cut themselves now?

there are studies that show that mental stability is directly impacted by social environment. actually to be honest it doesnt take a genius to realize that someone calling you worthless can ruin your day. there are also studies that explain how dealing with that kind of oppression constantly will easily cause someone to experience something similar to Stockholm syndrome or brainwashing which results in a normal person who's completely happy with their life going on a murder suicide rampage or at the very least start doubting their own existence. religion and ego play a part in it also, but that doesnt change the fact that there is real harm being done.

Edit*

the easiest solution is to stand up for other players. report those who deserve it. everyone needs a shoulder to lean on from time to time.

notice me Sin pi1 votes

there isnt really a solution to this since most of the flamers are bronze 5 or 4 smurf accounts who dont really care about getting banned, unless rito does something against making smurf accounts

Do something about toxic people making new accounts. Smurf accounts are fine.

notice me Sin pi1 votes

if rito cant find out which ones are the smurfs, then rito definitely cant find which ones are smurfs AND toxic, so idk, seems like there's no solution to me unless government suddenly requires us to input social security number or something to create account like korea (even then korea has its own flaws)

Rintam1 votes

Riot has a system to detect Smurfs. It is not a violation of the Code of Conduct to make a Smurf. Toxicity is a problem with no easy solution, but banning people helps.

notice me Sin pi1 votes
  1. by the time rito gathers enough data from an account to detect the smurfs, that account would have already caused toxic environments in significant amount of games.
  2. Even then, it's useless if rito cant link that smurf account to the main account since just banning toxic smurfs wont fix toxicity as long as main account isnt banned (and in korea, rito can easily link them cuz of the government requirements to create an account)
Rintam1 votes

The Smurf check starts as early as the tutorial. They detect it very quickly. Eventually, the Smurfs might just get tired of doing all their inventories and give up. What else would you have them do?

This is how people in perceived anonymity generally act. Plus you get the smaller group (only 10 people in your game), the lack of immediate bannability (going to have to wait until after the game at least), and the fact that it's a competitive game where your avatar gets killed when you're losing.

If the community was smaller, it would have a chance for people to get to know each other and place imaginary "faces" with the names. But as long as it's "some scrub feeding bot lane" rather than "Alex having a bad day"... that's how it's going to be :/

This happened to a friend's friend of mine. We played with them and they quit pretty fast because he was level 10 or so and people were complaining hard at him. Wasn't very nice even when he wasn't doing that bad I was shocked. We played with around level 20. I don't see this often but, it is probably because I play draft pick and people seem nicer there. Yes there are still mean people but, much more rare than ranked or blind pick. I haven't played ranked much but, for the amount I played it was pretty toxic (In silver).

Ziovi1 votes

this happens to everyone who starts league, really. When you are leveling up you are exposed to absurd level of toxicity. I still remember how it was when i started and was flamed so hard because i wasn't good at playing. Of course, the guys who flamed me weren't good either, just better than a total beginner like i was. They were probably smurfs of very bad players who are also toxic and made a new account because either they got banned or they are delusional and think they deserve better than bronze V 0 LP but are stuck there because of "fucking noobs". Fortunately i don't give a damn, so i don't flame, i don't get angry, and i pretty much ignored them.

Shieldbro1 votes

I've been playing flex and as you it's rather ...flex. So i noticed everyone is mixed together and I have a team with unrankeds, bronzes, silvers, golds, low plats... so I say to my team hey I'm plat so pls listen to my pings and guess what...my silver adc rages at me for not following him in his suicide missions, mid says plat what? you suck 0 4 7 Zyra, yes I'm solo in lane like you... People are stupid obviously but I don't get why support is blamed for a bad adc or vice versa, it's not like we're the same entity lol.
