Doran's Shield seems too strange to be a Doran item, tbh. Or just items in general

Doran's Blade item 1055

Stats

  • +80 health
  • +8 attack damage
  • +3% life steal

Doran's Ring item 1056

Stats

  • +60 health
  • +50% base mana regeneration
  • +15 ability power

Passive

  • Restores 4 mana upon killing an unit.

Doran's Shield item 1054

Stats

  • +80 health

Passive

  • +6 flat health regeneration per 5 seconds. (passive #1)
  • Basic attacks deal an additional 5 physical damage to minions on hit. (passive #2)
  • Unique: Restores 20 health over 10 seconds after taking damage from an enemy champion. (passive #3)

Oh okay?

No only does Doran's Shield have 3 passives and only 1 stats for no good reason which is a pretty farcry from the other 2 Doran items, 2 of its passives seems to be too needlessly complicated as opposed to the straightforward-ness of the Doran line, 2 of its passives are literally the same passive, and it also has this passive #2 that gives an oddly specific kind of damage (as a shield of all things, but then the other 2 also give HP. Still, it looks a bit off) and not even an unique passive?

I'm sorry, what?

What's going on?

The Doran line gives: HP, some form of sustain, a way to last-hit and/or waveclear better, and something specific to each item.

Blade?

  • Sustain: lifesteal
  • Last-hit: AD
  • Specific: AD again, because it works against champions too

Ring?

  • Sustain: mana regen + mana refund on last-hit
  • Last-hit: mana refund on last-hit + AP for waveclear
  • Specific: AP again, because it works against champions too

Shield?

  • Sustain: HP regen
  • Last-hit: damage only against minions
  • Specific: Defense (anti-poke protection), that works only against champions

I don't see your problem with Doran's Shield. Yeah, it's not exactly formatted the same way as the other 3, but it gives similar effects and solves the same issues as the rest of Doran's Line.

Yeah I got over it pretty quickly.

Each of those items give 3 things, health, a small trade power, and sustain. In the case of dorans ring and blade, their offensive stats help them cs. That's why Shield's trade booster is split into more minion damage, and reactive regen. Its sustain is the base health regen, and it gives health. It just does it in a way tanks can make it out of poke Lanes alive.

I can get behind this, in terms of design philosophy.

But make the minion damage passive melee only or something. I mean, since it's stack-able and that it gives minion-specific damage, it's not hard to imagine ranged AA champs start abusing it (which already happened). Or at least half the minion damage for ranged like how we usually do.

EDIT: line-crossed. Because as far as Doran is concerned, design-wise there shouldn't be a ranged-melee distinction. Though it's true that ranged characters are abusing the new Doran, but given the explanation, Doran's Shield also makes sense to me now. Not sure what to do...

Wait, ring gives health?

I never noticed this.
