It was saying we are getting an update so ranked is disabled till 7 o'clock, but I wake up to find no update?

I think it was preparing the client for the irelia rework? I'm not sure.

Well, there was. It happened.

You can find threads from this morning complaining that the game was down for a few hours because of it.
