Level 7 Lulu main here.
Playing lulu is all about knowing the proper time to use what and when and on whom.
Max E first in every matchup. Max W second and Q Last.
E is just your most consistent spell.
It makes for easy and safe harass and also provides shielding and can't miss like Q.
W second because the Attack Speed buff and speed duration are invaluable mid game.
Max Q last because honestly it doesn't give you anything beyond the slow.
Starting items, most commonly you will run
, but always consider
when in a passive lane.
You will get far more gold in a lane where you can't consistently harass if you have coin than with Spellthief.
In lane, you wanna either E-Auto attack for harass in a harass lane, or stay back and shield enemy poke is a passive lane.
In a straight fight, 9/10 you wanna prioritize shielding over the damage from your E. Mitigating damage is far more important in a straight fight than the measly damage your E does.
When the enemy has a primary threat that will decimate your teammates on engage like a Riven or assassin, prioritize saving your W for the Polymorph just for them. it will singlehandedly win you teamfights.
Remember, it is often better to use the W speed boost to run away as opposed to trying to Polymorph them to lead an escape.
use Polymorph in situations where you have to fight is out moreso than as a means to escape.
As lulu,
is your best friend and core item.
Together with your W, you can give a whopping 70% attack speed to a teammates when you shield them and Whimsy them.
This is both very good for attack speed champs and ADCs on your team as well as for providing sustain between skirmishes . it is also incredible for taking objectives.
You can basically turn any ganker into an initiator with yoru ulti, as it provides an AoE knockup and slow, and gives your ally bonus Health, acting as a pseudo heal if they are not full HP after it ends. Walking up and Polymorphing the enemy laner can often be a free kill once the jungler or laner comes to gank. be ready to do this when your teammates come to gank bot.
The reverse is also true. lulu has deceptively potent roams. her W allows her to travel River at a decent pace and also makes for very powerful CC midlane on the enemy laner. If they are low and running, E-Q with a W somewhere will often be all you need to secure your midlaner a kill or burn an enemy flash.
If they are int he mist of fighting, Shielding your ally then polymorphing the enemy is your go to plan.
For boots, I prefer
, but have been going
as of late for the early CDR. it is a very quick and potent powerspike that i am enjoying quite a bit.
In aggressive lanes, get Thunderlords for the poke while in passive lanes, get windspeakers. Even in non passive lanes, i would recommend windpeakers 9/10 over Thunderlords since Thunderlords completely falls of after lane phase for you, while Windspeakers scales with your build and items.
Supports you typically wanna go aggressive into are heavy engage supports like
or enemy adcs like
.
Especially
.
Your E provides true sight, so tagging him with it before he can finish his Q is a potent counter measure to his escapes.
Go passive into AP mage supports like
. You will become much more useful than them as long as you get your ADC though lane unscathed.
With Windpeakers, Lulu E can Block 100% of
's W+ his passive and DFT damage and still have shield left over.
Lulu's Passive Pix bolt's make it to where she can 1 shot Zyra's plants. Consider this when laning against Zyra.
Focus on blocking the plant damage and killing the plants.
is similar.
Whenever he gets his E on you or the ADC, shield him and kite back, killing his voidlings.
use your E-Q combo to pop his Spellshield off before en engage , especially when your jungler comes in.
Using either your ulti or Polymorph when he ults will cancel it so if he is level 6, expect is and save either of for when he does.
For Runes I go with Flat AP Marks, HP Seals Flat AP Glyphs and Flat AP Quints.
This allows my shields and Speedboost to be just a little more potent in the early game. I use Flat AP as opposed to MMpen because your actual utility doesn't scale with penetration, just AP.
For masteries its always been 0/18/12 going Wanderer - Secret Stash - Meditation - Bandit - Intelligence - and then either Tlords or Windspeakers depending on the situation in Cunning,
- You wont get much mileage out of savagery since you won't be last hitting and the pushing power ti give sis negligible.
- Secret Stash is basically the only of the 3 mid tiers that you can effectively use.
- Having the Mana regen as Lulu is far more invaluable for lane presence and sustain, even in the later stages of the game where you ill be spamming spells a lot. This along with your itemization allows you to recuperate between skirmishes and such.
- Bandit because you are support and not taking it is basically handicapping yourself in terms of income since you can't clear waves and have no kill pressure alone.
- Intelligence over Precision. Always. No iffs and or buts. Yes, even if you are going the aggressive route. The extra 5% CDR is so invaluable to Lulu it isn't even funny.
In lane, this allows you to not only harass more frequently and consistently, but also allows you more uptime of your shield to block enemy poke and damage.
In the midgame, that 5% CDR can mean the difference between the life or death of an ally to ignite damage.
Lulu's shield lasts 6 seconds.
With 45% CDR, You can get your E to about 4 seconds and change.
You can get Your E to have a CD that is shorter than the duration of the actual Shield. That is some URF level shit.
Your Q goes to about 2 seconds and Your W is basically always up as soon as its duration ends.
Having this much uptime of your entire arsenal of tools is too much potency to give up as Lulu support.
The amount of damage you will mitigate, Disruption you will cause and teammates that you will buff will make you the teams most valuable player and regardless of all the memes about supports never getting any credit, they WILL notice.
Giving all of that up for a bit extra damage on your harass in lane is a joke in comparison.
Matchups.
Lulu matches best with champions that like on-hits and attack speed, since her W and Passive both provide and are maximized by these champions.
For Marskman, this includes but is not limited to :

for non marskman and other champs that are in other positions on the team, you have , but not limited to:

When you Shield your Ally, you give them your passive, which means that Pix attacks in accordance to their Attack speed.
The amount of damage does rack up quickly.
She also goes well with champs that like Movespeed:
etc.
As you can see, lulu can be extremely useful to a lot of champions.
Counters
Imo Lulu has no true hard counters except maybe
since Black shield Blocks your W and ulti knockup, but the opponents that do best against her are champs with legitimate heals.
Lulu wins lanes by either poking out champions or preventing them from poking you out.
Heal champions like
and
do best against her because they laugh at all her poke.
Morganna can be beat by simply using your Passive and Q/E to pop black shield. Thunderlords might be needed in this matchup just to make it easier to do. it depends on the enemy ADC and whether they are a lane bully of a passive farmer.
is a weird one. Her Poke utterly falls off in the laning phase around level 4 or so or after your first back.
You can then transition to aggressive to force her to burn all her mana on heals.
before then , prioritize shielding her Q's and Passive Autos.
is another one.
While she has no true heals before 6, similar to you. she does play similarly to Soraka in that all she wants to do is get your lane partner though laning phase safely.
The key is simply to bait out her Shields and then poke as much as possible. You might not get a kill in lane but you will zone and force them to back and that is all you need to start putting damage on tower and potentially start forcing her to shield the tower.
W-ing your ADC will make quick work of getting substantial damage on it early on.
..and that's about it.
For tips for laning AGAINST lulu.. Im not telling ;P
Hope this helps.
