This Nunu change is an example of Riot not thinking through their changes.
Here's the change in a nutshell, and why it's going to make Nunu very weak.
- Bonus move speed changed to out-of-combat movement speed.
Nunu's thing is counter-jungling. OOC MS sounds good in theory, but you're going to rarely have that when attacking camps constantly, not to mention contesting (i.e. fighting the enemy jungler).
- No more attack damage bonus.
Alright, once again, counter-jungling means you have to fight sometimes, and you have to clear camps quickly. This change hurts both.
- Only gain a bonus on Large Monsters.
This one is the worst, and a prime example of the deepest, biggest flaw in Riot's attitude towards video game design.
Support Nunu, which was niche but semi-viable, is now dead. Top Nunu is viable at the highest elos. It is also hurt bad by this change. Essentially dead as well.
A video game designers main goal is to create meaningful choices. CREATE CHOICES. Not restrict them. Forcing champions to max a specific ability (Taliyah) or forcing a champion into a specific role (the Mordekaiser rework) is something that should never be done. There should always, always be opportunities for players to seek out and create unique strategies, or discover new ways to use a champion.
I don't think Jungle Nunu will be "ruined" by this change, but the change is evidence that Riot:
-
Doesn't actually play the game enough to understand the implications of their changes.
-
Is trying to force players to do things one specific way, instead of creating meaningful decision making.
I don't like this trend. The worst part of this specific change is that it doesn't even accomplish the goal of fixing any of the (perceived) problems with Nunu.
