The indirect buff that pushed Sion over the top.

As most people are aware right now Sion Is well OP. He is the most picked top laner, the highest win% top laner and quickly becoming one of the most Banned top laners. So why did he become like this without major buffs to his itemization or his kit? Some people think Runes reforged specifically comet for the poke in lane, while the new rune system certainly is nice for Sion it's been out for quite some time now, IMO we would've seen this quicker and Sion is also preforming well with Glacial augment and other rune choices. Which leads me to believe it's something else.

My explanation can be found in 8.2

Targeted damaging spells draw minion aggro.

Champions with spammable targeted spells, like Pantheon and Cassiopeia, put opposing laners in an awkward position: fight back and draw minion aggro, or just take the punishment they hand out. Changing this mechanic will make those champions a lot more intuitive to play against, as well as easier to balance.

Why is this really good for Sion you ask? Well due to the long range of his E he effectively is one of the few champs in top that can still spam poke during lane phase, making Sion a lane bully along with being a Strong Tank.

Here's to hoping his CD/Mana cost or Damage of his E is nerfed in 8.5

I play AD Sion for fun sometimes and i noticed this yesterday! He is almost as much of a bully as Renekton now, but with better scaling into the last game.

That's true honestly, alot of Sion's (Including myself, 150k Mastery Points) are maxing E over Q now adays since he can just Pick up minions & beat you over the head with them. I remember WAY back when he was first reworked, this was a problem then. Before patch 5.5, here were the Cooldowns & Mana Costs for Sion's [Q: Decimating Smash] & [E: Roar of the Slayer] [Q: Decimating Smash] - Mana Costs: 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 [E: Roar of the Slayer] - Mana Costs: 35 at ALL RANKS

They said that Sion was supposed to be "a Undead behemoth with a Giant Axe. he should be swinging it, not screaming at minions." So in Patch 5.5 they swapped his mana costs on his [Q] & [E]. This made it so his [Q] cost 45 Mana at all ranks & his [E] costing between 35-55 mana.

He maxes E first because Sion isn’t actually that great in early Melee trades against other champions so it’s better to just poke them out. That and his Q has possibly too much counterplay.

Though he’s always been a lane bully tank. He’s designed to be a lane pushing bully. But against other bullies he’s not supposed to be good.
