Is Shen a Fighter or a Tank? An opinion on recent Shen discussion
Okay, so I'm 90% sure most players agree that the main difference between Fighter Tanks
and actual Tanks
is:
- Fighters and bruisers get tanky to protect themselves. Tank itemization to them is mostly just a means for them to last as long as possible during fights so that they can get their damage (usually damage designed to scale on time) out in some form.
- Actual tanks get tanky to protect their teammates. Their itemization routes tend to be full of Passive utility effects and a buttload of CDR. Their abilities tend to be much more "High Impact" single activations, and they don't scale as hard on time.
To note, when I say "scale on time", this tends to be about things like Attack Speed or low Cooldown abilities such as the fact that Shyvana benefits from Attack Speed. "High Impact" abilities tend to favor individual and/or well timed activations, such as how Braum's Shield is on a rather high Cooldown for much of the mid game and how Braum himself doesn't need to be the one to activate his passive Stun.
What really bothers me whenever I see the "Tank" side of Shen is that half of his kit is literally the other classification of what a tank can be. Shen's Passive, Q, and W all scale on time in some way, be it Attack Speed or regen or being a low cool down spam ability, all signs of a Fighter Tank. On the other hand though, Shen's E and Ultimate are both very clearly high impact Tank abilities. Honestly, I think that if Shen is to remain a tank from here on out, he needs to have his role as a tank defined. Is he the Tanky Fighter, meant to take to the front lines and is surviving as long as possible because it benefits himself the most, or is he the True Tank, meant to defend his allies through powerful abilities and well timed activations?
