Volatile Meta (why marksman are everywhere.)
I've, been thinking about the changes from S5 a lot lately and wanted some critique or feedback on it.
So, I've heard a lot about the burst meta, bruiser meta, Marksman meta, and now AD assaissan meta. But, I don't feel like what's strong now is specific to class.
Top and Mid lane are now very volatile and very snowbally. You generally want lane bullies that can run away with that lead because when lanes fail, they've failed fairly hard which means there's usually a fed top and mid laner somewhere in every game. Fed top laners are securing their leads by building dead man's plate which gives them the mobility and sticking power to catch people out and covering their weaknesses. (A Garen or udyr with dead man's and zz'rot that surrendly can't be kited.)
In the end, i'm seeing a lot of top laners get very fed very quickly. They wind up doing more damage than a standard marksman or mage because they're very fed. They inherently have vastly more defensive stats and usually more utility.
I think the marksman that have been picked so far fall into two categories.
1.) Marksman that are very safe and bursty.
Graves, Lucian, ezreal, corki, quin. All have at least decent burst. Usually acceptable poke. Not the highest theoretical damage but they can SURVIVE. They have the utility to help their team deal with the 4/0 poppy.
For example, Lucian has a dash. He also has the ability to let himself and others on his team kite enemies marked if they damage them. Quin and Graves have a pseudo-blind that can help protect them.
All of these champions have the burst to help deal with squishy fed enemy mid laners.
2.) Marksman that utilize new season's overturned masteries and/or items particularly well.
I feel like these are falling off in general.
Graves, Lucian, Misfortune (before nerfs to her and TLD), and now Kog'Maw now that his attack speed scaling is more accessible and he can utilize Fervor of battle much earlier.
Notice Graves fell under both.
I think as the masteries and items are tuned a lot of the marksman in the second group will fall off so long as they're not in the first. For example, MF.
The first group however is a symptom of dealing with how unstable the other lanes are. Even if Jinx or Tristana and MF could in theory outdamage the others if they could stand still and auto, they can't survive udyr long enough to do much of anything while the graves, lucian, and quin will survive and keep contributing what they can.
This is true no-matter where they lane. A corki mid lane that can waveclear, burst, and survive the 4/0 poppy will probably be preferable to, say, a Xerath who might out waveclear and poke corki, but who won't survive for nearly as long.
I think if the stability issues in other lanes are fixed, and if the snowball is dialed back a bit you will see the return of sustained damage marksman and less marksman in random roles other than marksman.
And thoughts?
