You should NOT be allowed to use a champion for the first times in ranked

Macilento··50 votes·3,759 views

I know many like me have a little bit of common sense and actually try the champion at least few times in normals before going ranked.

But how many times this has happened? People buy a champion and isntalock in ranked, thinking they are capable of using it, then feeding and basically condemning your team.

Shouldn't be there a rules that say "Before using this champion in ranked matches, try it at least 5 times in normal games"?

You should honestly be at least rank 3 on a champ to use them in ranked. IMHO

For a lot of people, that would drop their available champion list down to far less than 10 champions

Well, that's an interesting point. Then again, what is the point of requiring a player to own umpteen champions if the player only knows how to play one of them?

Because a lot of skills are transferable between champions, and you need 16 champions so that you can't be put in a situation where all your champions are either picked or banned.

This... The reason it requires a certain number of champions is so they can't all be banned out.

I don't know why there are threads about this topic because it's just never going to happen. This game is already hugely gated. When I try to introduce people to this game I still have two friends who haven't even made it past lvl 15 yet.

You need IP for champs and runes, lvl 30, and a certain number of champs just to play ranked in the first place. Yes making it require mastery would stop at least some of the shenanigans (although I've seen people with champion mastery still do horribly, you can have champion mastery and have lost every game with that champion), but it would make the grind hideous.

This is one of those things that you think you want it until you actually get it, and then you are going to have a million people on here complaining how they can't play half their champion pool because they don't have full mastery with them.

Really what I hear when I read these posts is "I don't trust other players to play correctly." Well... yeah, it's an online game with a lot of people playing it of all age groups and free to boot, however, to ruin the experience for everyone for the few people that do bad things would wreck the game as a whole.

If you don't have enough experience to have 10 champs level 3, you honestly have no business at all doing ranked.

That's a horribly inaccurate statement. I've played many champs for a great long time way before this mastery system came out. I don't play anywhere near as often as I used to and when I do, I usually play a different champion every time because I like to play for this long forgotten thing called fun. As a result, I think the highest level I have a champion is just barely 2. Even though if the mastery system was implemented since I first started playing, I'd have the majority of champions at 5. I have plenty of experience with the champions that I don't have a 3 with, it's just that said experience came in before such a system began to track that.

It also doesn't account for the people who spam play a champion just to get the mastery up.

Granted, I don't play ranked anymore, so my opinion might not be as relevant in your mind. But that doesn't mean I won't play ranked again. And when I do I don't want it to be locked behind a grind gate to get my 16 champions to level 3. Especially when I might occasionally pick a champion that is outside of those 16 without having them at mastery 3.

I agree and disagree. Agreed that it seems like yet another arbitrary threshold... RIGHT NOW.

I think if you changed the rank requirement to "have all rune and mastery slots unlocked, and own 16 champions on which you have level 3 mastery" (or honestly, 2 could do as well), got rid of summoner levels entirely, and instead use champion mastery as a way to unlock runes and mastery pages -- then the grind isn't necessarily any longer, and may in fact be shorter.

Lugg2 votes

If you spam play a champion just to get the mastery up, you are probably going to get proficient at that champion. Getting to level 3 on champion really doesn't take that long.

The mastery system has been in place long enough for it to not be a real issue.

I wouldn't say that a lot of people only play a handful of champions and some of my old favorites I spammed before masteries came out

Clearly you will not be joining us in ranked anytime soon.

As you can see, I have played one game on that account since the mastery system was implemented and it isn't my main account anymore.

On my main account I have 17 champions level 3, 8 champs level 4, and 5 champs level 5.

Remlap12232 votes

How many times do I have to say it? If the mastery system carried over from games before it was implemented that'd be one thing, but implementation of that now would pork old players unnecessarily.

Lugg1 votes

I fall into that category and I have over 30 champs rank 3 or higher. Try again.

Kagagiou2 votes

If that is applied, I feel bad for Boxbox and the 'one trick ponies' out there. :D I'm still learning other champs so I'm not doing rank in the first damn place, but I try to go 3 per role so I always have SOMETHING accessible when I did in S5...

Restless Slumber1 votes

BoxBox isn't a one trick though. He's able to play more than just Riven at a challenger level. I'd feel worse for someone like Tobias Fate who only plays Twisted Fate and Gangplank (he plays them in all roles).

True enough. I was just giving a general example. But yeah, the 1 trick ponies might be in trouble. :D

They should honestly just have it so that if you're in gold or below you have to have at least mastery 2 on the champ to play it in ranked. Any rank higher than that, they have enough experience to play whatever. Personally I have played a few champs for my first time in ranked and will do well. It's not that bad to do, I would just prefer people to play something that they're comfortable on that fits the situation. The champs that I don't like first timers on though are the ones that don't fit into teamcomps, such as Shaco.

Then we might also face people who are actually decent at their champs so we can get better

Lugg1 votes

I think you are correct in that assumption. I often find my game slipping when playing against a lot of bad players. You have to face good ones to actually improve. I think that's the essence of what ELO Hell really is.

Furor Nexis2 votes

I'd say a champion Mastery level should be appropriate to play the champion in Ranked. It'd make it far easier to discern, and you'll be far less likely to get troll picks and so on from it.

I don't understand why people are still playing Jhin mid in ranked. I have yet to see anything remotely positive come from that pick

But but but I got stomped by this champ my opponent used last game, so it must be gud and I wanna stomp with it as well and I think I know how to play it since I watched my opponent stomp me yo >_+

Annie th DrkChld2 votes

Honestly I agree, not with needing to have level 3 mastery that's harsh but there are people who don't even know their champions. although the difference between a player that knows his champion well and a good player overall isnt saying much if you don't know anything about your champ that can be a problem.

GrReaper963 votes

I think lvl2 mastery is good

Maximum Morde2 votes

There is always a first time you take a champion into ranked.

P.S. For reals though, I have like 8 accounts, I don't need to grind champion ranks with ALL of them. I already had to grind runes and champions.

why the F do you have 8 accounts? Plan on getting banned anytime soon?...or was it helping friends level from noob status?

As someone with 3 accounts, I do it for the names. I just really enjoy playing a champ on an account named after that account.

  1. A funny account name will strike me.

  2. Multiple servers to play with my friends around the globe.

  3. Help out noobi friends without dragging them into death trap matches.

  4. Dodging the dodge penalty. Its my work around for being punished by not wanting to play with toxic little shits.

That about sums it up. I've never been banned in the three+ years I've played league, and only chat restricted once several years ago on a single account.

Currently 2 on LAN, 2 on EUW, and 4 on NA.

this might help alil but not as much as u think, example iv been playing this game from S1 i loved kennen and i played maybe 200 normal games with him, haven't played that lil rat for almost 2 years now, so if i pick him in rank today you bet im gonna feed the world.

HoukagoFapTime1 votes

I usually play champs for the first time (or in general champs that i've barely ever used) in ranked, not every time of course but i did it quite often. Luckily i don't play ranked a lot, like 2 or 3 ranked per week but i tend to not care too much about them, i just wanna see how far i can get by playing this way just by having fun instead of tryharding.

Banuvan1 votes

You mean like actually utilizing the champion mastery system that is already in place to make ranked games better for everybody? How dare you suggest something to Rito that makes sense and would help improve the game.

I'm sure Lyte has some misguided data to say it doesn't matter and cutting down on players saying words like poop and pee is way more important.

I've been saying this since the Mastery System was put into effect. Rito won't do it. It makes too much sense.

Mody bird1 votes

Just like hots, I think you need to be rank 5 on a hero to play them in ranked in hots

Yesterday FIRST TIME Evelynn i played in my PROMOS. I had the best performance in that game, yet seemed like others the first timers and not me. (6/1/4 evelynn in laning phase - mostly killing shyvana in her jungle and MF who farming alone on bot and camping mid) So don't compare everyone with that trolls who indeed playing that champion the first time, mostly to throw the game. Most of the "first time im going to play this champion" can be played by knowing a little situational item build/basic skill(combos) by reading the skills while waiting for the first wave or being at the loading screen. So don't punish the people who bough the champion, yet never played it. While in ranked, it seems to be a good situational pick.

LatetotheRace1 votes

Make it level 2 or 3 mastery. It's about 10 games or 5 wins, so it won't be that much of a requirement, but it's still better than nothing.

falloffreljord1 votes

lets say you feed as that champion you still gain points and still can climb it just takes longer

LatetotheRace1 votes

You gain about 100 points per loss. No one is going to not take the hint after 30 games.

falloffreljord1 votes

still possible. trust me some people out there are extremely determined to get those ranks

9kPluzZ1 votes

belive it or not, there is actually not a single champ that is genuinely difficult to play. Most just have a single combo you do over and over. And others just aa. MabyYasuo and some adcs because of kiting.

I support the need for mastery lvl 2 on a champ. You can't get that with one game, unless you do really well in a long winning game, demonstrating some level of ability anyway.

It sets a minimum.

falloffreljord1 votes

again lets say only lvl 2 with 3 champs those three get banned I'm automatically screwed and have to dodge queue not even only just 3 in ranked it can be up to 15 champs you can be lvl 2 with and its a rare chance you still wont be able to choose a champ because of that rule

DorkunedAuras1 votes

the system currently requires you to have 16 champs for you to play ranked just in case. It could be changes to require you to have 16 champs at rank 2, WHICH YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY HAVE IF YOU LVLED TO 30!

falloffreljord1 votes

that could still easily leave you with something like a rumble adc or Leona mid

Stephenizgod1 votes

When I pitched this, I got downvoted really hard and everyone told me its a bad idea because they should be allowed to make their own decisions...

This is not and never will be a terrible idea, no one should be able to pick a champion into Ranked they don't know.

TengenToppaGnar1 votes

Or we should be allowed to vote them out, maybe.... Had a Gragas admit it was first time cause he was tabbed out and came back in 'panicking', told him to dodge in queue. Didn't and ended up feeding 15 kills. Waste of my time, pure and simple.

TengenToppaGnar1 votes

I would have to agree with this in one way. Latest game... first timer Gragas. Why? He paniced cause he TABBED THE F*** OUT, and came back with too little time left. Told him to dodge, he didn't... dies 15 bleeding times.... T_T SMH

If anything, i would say like when you get the "message" for an afk check, League pops back up in your face, when its your turn to pick/ban it pops back in your face. And if you tab out... IF YOU TAB OUT, YOU GET FORCED OUT. I'm sorry, I get way too many games dodged cause some asshat isn't paying attention, or they pick the wrong champion cause.. YOu guessed it. they were tabbed out.

some people only play ranked so they could never expand their champion pool
