What are some supports who protect their ADC as a top priority?

I main Braum support, mostly because he is really good at keeping his ADC from dying, by intercepting harass and giving e ADC tank stats.

Are there any other supports, even without the support tag, who also function this way? In other words, as a playstyle, my main goal is to limit the kill streak of the enemy ADC, and the kill streak of my own is second. So I'm looking for champions who embody this, other than the mustache man.

Techincially you can argue Leona Alistar Thresh as well... however Braum is only one who's spell set is effectively pure protection (put him in front of all DMG sources and tank) whereas others are only generally focused on either:

  1. Crowd Control (stuns; snares, slows) mages or tanks such as Morgana Alistar
  2. DMG absorption(moving around to bait attacks such as Leona )
  3. Situational control (kiting agro, AoE effects, or buffs/movement abilities)(Bard Thresh )

BTW a note to all the people spamming me:

"WHAT ABOUT Janna!?!?!?!?!"

....nonsense.

Peeling isn't protection. Peeling is Peeling.

Protection is defined by being able to absorb or migitate dmg incoming to a friendly target (in this situation an ADC) whereas peeling is trying to get the enemy to move away from the ADC or be slowed down (but not directly migitating damge). To this effect only Braum can manage this with the entirety of this skill set..

Indeed it is so...

Braum Stand behind Braum. Janna The tempest is at your command. Lulu Adoribus. Soraka To heal and protect. Nami Ride upon the waves.

morg is great at protecting an ADC from being CCed if you good at reads.

Nami is all peels and heals

Braum for blocking every hit before it reaches your carry. Pure manly defense.

Janna is better for peeling pesky assassins and fighters who are already on your carries.

From experience, those are the 2 best defensive supports for protecting fed carries.

Alistar Janna Thresh Sona Soraka and...LeeSin is really good at protecting ADC as a jungler. E slows + R keeps them off.

For unusuall supports: Gragas is pretty good for peeling, good cc, solid tankiness and big enough to bodyblock well Rammus vs single targets that try to get you carry, rammus works really well(his laneing isn't great though, would probably work well as roaming support, especially in a lane swap) Nunu vs low mobillity, there is no escapeing from the permaslow, and that W buff keeps your carry slippery Trundle That pillar is a supprisnigly nasty controll tool, his Q takes away flat damage, which is huge in the early, his damage output means the enemy adc can't ignore you to hit carry instead, and his Ult Turns even a full tank Heca into a little squishy if he wants to dive your carry. The passive also gives good sustain to take some poke in lane.

I would say Braum, Janna, Lulu and Nami are your top picks. Lulu and Janna have absolutely insane amounts of disengage and peel packed into their kits, literally an answer for every situation. Actively better at defending their ADC than Braum, I would say. Nami has less reliable/PANIC BUTTON peel because her stun isn't the easiest to hit and her slow needs you to auto the enemy, but she has 3 forms of crowd control, persistent MS buffs and a strong heal so I think she works too.

yasuo can make it a kill lane and stop non-artillery with his W

some of the supports can shield their carry but the amount isn't enough

Lulu Soraka Taric Janna

Thank you for all of the input. One thing I would like to note is that with most of the recommendations (at least the ones that get repeated, like Janna, Nami, and Lulu), is that they are mages. I failed to make this clear in my post, but I like to play tanks, always have. My first champion was Garen, and that W was the BEST. I moved onto Zac, my first 6300 champ, and also loved him. So I just wish there were some more tanks!

I'll have to retry Zac support, Thresh, Shen, and I recently stumbled upon a DrMundo support concept.

Janna and alistar are the two main ones imo. Janna is one of the highest winrate champs at all elos and Alistar is highly contested at high elos. Alistar has the knockup and knockback to push away any divers and janna can knockback with her ultimate and shield her adc.

Pretty much any support does except for the squishy.

Sona is reliable to even come out and protect her adc in nasty situations.

Xinotine6/12/2015, 5:14:58 AM1 votes

One and only: Janna

Peeling Queen.

If you want to play tanks, I would say Thresh can either go offensive but also protect his team with fair amount of CC and that lantern saves lives.

Janna

She's probably better than Braum at it, to be honest.
