the vicious cycle that is nerfing supports
i'm going to explain why riot's approach to supports in the last 2 seasons is a bad thing.
first off, supports really only got out of hand because of all of the damage going around, forcing new itemization for them to even be relevant.
. these items were inherently broken at some point. because there was so much damage going around, the team decided these items were necessary. they ended up completely breaking enchanters, and were such good items other lanes were taking them because of how cheap and cost efficient they were.
now that i've explained that, here's why riots current cycle of nerfing every support is terrible.
most people dont realize this because they don't play support, but support is THE MOST draft intensive role in the game. your support pick can literally decide who wins the game. guess what happens when you go around nerfing supports you deem problematic? well, whoever they countered now sees a bump in winrates because that support's counter is now worse and not picked as much. a good example of this is
. guess who her counters were/are?
. Guess who got absolutely clubbed over the head with the nerf bat over the last 2 seasons? ALL OF THEM. and none of them were even op save for janna to begin with. itemization just made them super strong.
nami at the PEAK of her strength last season never passed 49% winrate, despite her having the exact same stats, base values, and scaling as she does now. KNOW WHY? ITS BECAUSE THOSE 7 CHAMPS I LISTED ABOVE WEREN'T NERFED INTO ABSOLUTE TRASH.
EVERY time you nerf a support to lower their winrate, you're going to proportionally raise the winrates of whoever they countered. HENCE WHY SONA AND NAMI ARE UP THERE IN TOP WINRATES FOR SUPPS.
