Hell I (finally :D ) got to gold this season with all sorts of different supports. 
to name a few, and some aren't the worst champs right now, but half of my games I get flak for my champ choices. On top of that I rarely take a support item beyond wards, or I pickup a late game locket. Supports don't have to be shield bots peeps, play what you wanna play and make it work. Long as the end screen says victory who cares.

FooDang1 votesThe thing with not buying support items is you are essentially a weaker underleveled version of a top/midlaner. Not as tanky or not as much damage.
At least with support items you are making your team stronger as a whole instead of buying selfish expensive items on a support budget. Gratz on gold btw.
