I want to talk about Malphite.

Hello, everyone, i want to talk about Malphite.

He's a great champion: similar to Mundo in terms of tank, he just annoys people and sticks to them. Of course, then there's his ultimate: THE best initiation a tank could hope for. So strong, so simple, so deadly : a big bang, all enemies are flying in the air and you’re right on them. Ain’t no way they’re leaving without losing some bits.

Either way, i’m wondering: his kit is most certainly great, but does it fit him?

He’s a giant colossus, just look at his splash, for god’s sake! In game, you get a big disappointment: tiny little rock who throws cookies. Shouldn’t he be more...i don’t know...stunning? Earthshattering? Giant golem of doom shouldn’t only throw cookies and make little splashes. His VU will most certainly increase his size, but is that going to be enough?

I’m not exactly asking for a rework, but i just want to know it feels good to play something you expect to be a legendary rock pokemon only to realise he’s smaller than Garen and has only one knockup. I know, i know, lot of new champs have knockups, but i think i’d fit Malphite.

HIS CURRENT KIT IS GREAT AND IF IT DOESN’T CHANGE I’M FINE WITH IT. I just want to know if i’m not the only one that wouldn’t mind if Malphite got reworked into some sort of Rock Sion. New Sion feels amazing to play, but doesn’t achieve my fantasy of playing a giant golem and Malphite doesn’t help either.

For now, just make him bigger and i’ll be happy. But in the long term, would you guys prefer a VU or a bigger update? So tl;dr: does Malphite achieve the fantasy of being this giant stone golem of pure destruction, as depicted in his splashart?

EDIT: It seems you guys are fine with his kit and believe a VU could be enough bring him back and fill the fantasy of being a giant stone bro.

The5lacker's post is on the spot:

{quoted}

I'm still wondering why rolling a pizza cutter at an enemy steals some of their movement speed.

Durzaka mentions:

{quoted}

The only problem is his Q animation on his default skin. It is pathetic. His default skin needs a rock variation of his Glacial skin. Giant spiky rocks hitting the enemy isntead of the cheese wheel of death.

I agree to this. Glacial's Q looks even better than Mecha's high-tech frizbee.

Kouga says:

{quoted}

Mostly, I think a VU would fix this fine. I agree he seems a little.. puny.. to be a proper Rock Hulk. I agree that he should be able to look Sion in the eyes. More than height, though, I think he should just be larger, like bigger around. A larger profile, more similar to Cho Gath than Sion. Big, oversized fists, craggly rock spikes on his head and shoulders, etc. And when he loses his passive shield, his size diminishes somewhat.

Particle effects though I think is what would make the difference. I think his cast times are a little fast, which makes it hard to make them look "heavy". But his Q could leave behind more of a visual trail - a line of broken rock, a fissure in the ground. It would be passable, and wouldn't affect movement over it (it'd be a crack in the ground, not a raised ridge, so visually you could tell you can still walk over it) but that'd look more like he's actually splitting the earth. His slam should leave more visual cracks in the ground, and his ult should leave a crater the size of the AoE impact.

So mostly I think it'd just be a VU, I don't think his kit needs any major tweaks.

The input of a new player, Red Frostraven:

[{quoted}](name=Red Frostraven,realm=EUNE,application-id=3ErqAdtq,discussion-id=FKXOMsAE,comment-id=000c,timestamp=2015-03-23T14:01:13.626+0000)

The look of the pizza wheel made me choose Nasus over Malphite as tank, as a completely new player. It'd look so much better as a levitating rock disc with the same shape, shattering at the end of it's run.

Finaly, let's check talk about LeagueSrsBsns's post:

{quoted}

so, people over at polycount doing better job than riot at everything as usual made this kewl malphite awhile back lol http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2014/353/c/5/malphite_lowpoly_shots_by_blindconcept-d8af2in.png

Now that is a giant rock golem. It looks amazing!

However, i have a bit of trouble seeing Malphite in this. I dig the concept for a full-on VU, but will people recognise him as Malphite? He looks pretty...alien to what Malphite is to a certain extend: his physical appearance looks so different, i don't know if i could see Malphite in it, like i still can't see Trundle in his Freljordian version(traditionnal ftw). Then again, this could be considered for a FULL Visual update.

New question based on the new picture: if this was the full VU, would you prefer it or a TU like Alistar or Kassadin, where Malphite stills looks the same as right now, but is simply with a bigger hitbox, with smoother movement and attacks with more fitting particles(no cheese wheel)?

EDIT 2: Alright, thanks everyone for helping out in this discussion. So let's make a quick recap:

  • His gameplay is fine. Great kit and fun champion.
  • Malphite NEEDS TO BE BIGGER. An obligation, that one. Not as big as 6 stack Cho, but bigger than Garen at least.
  • Cookies aren't scary, but few would mind if the cookie being in EXTRA TEXTURE UPDATE. However, Glacial Malphite's Q(the fissure in the ground) lots good and many would like to have it in his other skins.
  • Either a TU or a VU, few cares, as long as each makes Malphite look AWESOME AND BIG.
  • His head is weird. Give it some buffs.

That's about it.

Mine is how tiny his whole being is in-game.

I always just didn't get why his head looks like it is sprouting out of his chest...

Bastilean2 votes

Until i played him i thought that head was his nose in his potatoe head body. Honestly!

I also think his pizza cutter is boring. I really like when Mega Gnar throws rocks. DOTA Earthshaker is the defacto coolest IMO. Earthshakers Q is inspiring. Don't get me started on Tiny.

Having said all that Malphite is fun to play. I personally like his jungle and his ult can be game changing.

junglerboy162 votes

I actually thought the exact same thing, and thought he looked REALLY boring until I tried him out myself.

Morsigil3 votes

I also have this gripe. For the longest time I thought the spike on his back was his head, and then I realized that nub on his "chest" was and I was like "what the actual ****"

Durzaka10 votes

I feel his kit fits him well.

He smashes the ground with the force of a mountain with his E. He crushes/disables his foe with rocks with his Q, and when things get serious, he fucking throws his entire body into the enemies face.

The only problem is his Q animation on his default skin. It is pathetic. His default skin needs a rock variation of his Glacial skin. Giant spiky rocks hitting the enemy isntead of the cheese wheel of death.

They are also working at a higher resolution (higher poly count) than League can run last I heard, so that is the reason it looks better.

To be honest, I'd rather that design be for a completely new champion. It looks a little too drastic for a new version of Malph. Not that I don't want Malph to have something done to make him look more like he's presented/said to be though. I can just see this design as being like a rival for Malphite. An opposite, even.

Where Malph is more tanky, this new champ would be more offensive. Like mold his passive to add extra physical damage until so much is taken(of course, numbers tweaked so it isn't too strong or useless in both terms of durability and damage it provides). Instead of adding a coating of rock armor, it reinforces his hands with jagged rocks for additional damage that get peel'd away when he takes so much damage and refreshes like Malph's does. Q could be more like tossing a rolling boulder down the lane that does some damage, but knocks enemies to either side of it(think Draven skill that is similar in effect). W would need to be something new, most likely. E could be something like yanking one of the spires out of his back and tossing it towards an enemy to slow their movements(I guess like a Nid spear, but without the damage. Perhaps, the reverse of it. Weaker at range, stronger at point-blank. Chucked by a golem, after all). The ult.. Hmm.. Perhaps he slams his fists into the ground, causing a volcanic eruption that deals massive physical damage to enemies. It knocks up nearby enemies, but any caught in the 'blast radius' have slower movement speed due to the trembling ground.

Unlike Malphite, he'd be more of an up close champion that relies on skills to stick to the enemy(sure Malph does a similar thing, but he can sit back and poke a lot with Q before even needing/wanted to go in). He'd also be more damage oriented. His skills getting more utility than Malph to help compensate the lack of mobility like Malph has(Q MS steal and R). Could see something with this kinda kit possibly being mostly Top lane or maybe even Support due to the CC potential(maybe jungle as well, but idk).

I know I'd be interested in seeing this type of design as a new champ, even if the kit isn't exactly what I tossed out here.

honestly I feel that thing you show, watever it is feels more like the malphite we currently have than the polycount variation in a sense that it has a tiny head on his chest, hunched over and all...

I used to love the version above, but now this one seems even better as a concept.

The first one looks really humanoid juggernaut, but this is a bit different and to me that is more fitting to a shard of a mountain.

I think he needs to look more like his splash for sure. The position of his head is the weirdest thing and its so small!

step1: raise his head step2: make him bigger like they did with sion step3: change the looks of his abilities i honestly hate the position his head in in, its where his dick should be.

In terms of gameplay, I think his kit is actually well balanced in what Riot has typically explained a proper Tank to be. He has innate durability from his passive, he gets some damage from armor so he is rewarded by building tank (which in turn helps his passive durability), and he fits the usual theme of "gradual over time damage if you ignore them" via his AoE cleave on his AAs and his AD steroid to complement it.

So mechanically, I think he's spot on. He also fits the role of a tank by being able to peel by slowing an enemy or debuffing them with his smash, and he fits the initiator role - self-explanatory.

So what about thematically? Mostly, I think a VU would fix this fine. I agree he seems a little.. puny.. to be a proper Rock Hulk. I agree that he should be able to look Sion in the eyes. More than height, though, I think he should just be larger, like bigger around. A larger profile, more similar to Cho Gath than Sion. I agree with your points, but I feel like a lot of people may forget that if you are going to give him Sion-level proportions then Malph's hitbox will have to grow. This may be a worthwhile sacrifice (I have no opinion on it either way), but it would technically be a nerf.

Paletongue1 votes

I'd say its a buff because he's a tank and would want to be absorbing as many skillshots as he can to keep them off his teammates

Red Frostraven3 votes

Paletongue3 votes

Everyone else has already touched on what he needs rather than kit changes, but i do want to emphasize one point.

His abilities need to visually show their power. Q shouldn't look small and cute, W should have a dramatic animation or, like giant rock hands when activated, and his E should look more impactful than a cute little orange ring.

fiish e1 votes

I agree, his Q feels very wrong from an aesthetic point of view.

Gameplay wise, he wrecks immobile adcs late game. Even if he misses ult, a FH, Randuins, Thornmail, Sunfire/Cinderhulk, Ninja Tabi Malphite is ontop of you. His E reduces attack speed by 50% + 20% from FH and 15% from randuins ontop of 300+ armour. I really feel that this is malphite's "thing". With Randuins Omen and quite possibly Righteous Glory out his q feels pretty redundant but I don't play top Malph so I would rather let a Malphite main say their thoughts other than me.

TheI3igDaddy1 votes

Malphite needs a big visual update as well as being physically larger; not really HUGE, but bigger. Right now he's human-sized (go look up the Dominion animation that Riot made to see a height reference), which doesn't fit with this badass new splash that came out for him.

For Q, he needs a big visual shattering of the rock as it hits an enemy; I think there IS some of it already, but its very faint.

W could make his hands increase in size slightly, not just cover them with a red hue.

E should have a mini-shockwave attached to it; I own Mecha Malphite and his E looks really cool, but default Malph just has the Riot imprint on the ground. There should be a nicer dent on the ground, and not just the logo; have small fissures or something around his hand.

'Only thing that won't change is probably his ult, because the casting of it is so fast that changing the animation won't really do much.

Maximum Zilean1 votes

I agree, if riot were to give him a visual update. He needs a size increase. Heck making his current model about 3k health Zac size would be perfect.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

For me his kit fits him well. His basic abilities are that of a rolling stone, he gradually wears his enemies down with patience and persistence. But this restraint is thrown away once he gets serious and that's where his ult comes in, all bets are off, they've been ground down and now it's time to smash them to pieces.

Mecha MaIphite1 votes

I agree, buff Malphite.

HyperZEROXL1 votes

They could buff that passive, but how does a rolling rock steal movement speed? But that ult is awesome and funny! Hide in a brush and wait for the ADC, Use your ult and massacre them! Lol!

Rokr1 votes

I believe Malphite's kit is perfect the way it is.

His Q acts like a kind of targeted earthquake, stealing the target's MS and giving it to you, nothing wrong here.

His W gives him a nice cleave AND can be activated to deal a bit more of damage on autos.

His E is just the perfect Hulk-smash on the ground, but earth elemental version.

And his R, my God his R.... You know shit just got real when he ults in the teamfight and completely change the outcome.

TL;DR: His kit is completely fine. He could use a VU, but that's it.

Chespin20131 votes

i think his kit is pretty much fine maybe change something with his w or whatever cuz i feel like im barely doing anything when i activate but i think that making him bigger is priority

Auryiel1 votes

Kinda wish they'd change his Q and W

Mostly his W

fractalfantasies1 votes

Keep the kit the same, update his visuals.

TBadger1 votes

I think it works thematically and I've not known him to be particuarlly op/weak. So yeah, I'd say leave him as he is, god knows there's enough problems with certain other champions for us to be worrying about malphite.

Sageace1 votes

His Q can be changed to he cracks the earth until it reaches his target (Instead of a disc). Upon hitting the target, he slows them down. (I don't know if Malhpite should speed up or not).

I can see Malphite's E and W combine. First you ground slam, then because you did that, your autoattacks are enhanced with gathered earth on your fists for the next few seconds/auto-attacks. Now he has room for another ability. Maybe something to enhance his defense other than his passive. Like perhaps something similar to Annie's Shield, but based on his Armor.

One more thing: Make him bigger in the game. Sion big or bigger.

Yeah, I think he's a character that would benefit a lot from a visual update. The Polycount model looks nice - I like the veins of lava and the way the profile view looks - but...I don't know, it doesn't look like Malphite, not quite. He needs to be able to grin, I think.

Thinking on that, a voice update would be pretty neat too. But visual update would do far more for the character.

(Also on the Polycount model - I like the horn. It's like he is a beautiful, majestic rock-unicorn.)

Wow this malph on the pic look awesome! Too bad that we will never see him updated... Check that old 2009 model with PIZZA FEET and we are in 2015... So many forgotten champs that need a Visual update, i would REMOVE them from the game due to their old model, while they are waiting for a awesome Vu ( like Twitch, karthus, Heimer ) Chogath Corki DrMundo Fiddlesticks Evelynn Jax Corki Amumu PoppyNunu Taric Urgot Udyr Teemo Malphite Ryze

As for the question about the Malphite Pic, I would like to see Malphite in that form, I just want him to be bigger than Darius, maybe larger than 6-Stack Cho'Gath, but Malphite NEEDS to look somewhat similar to his splash art. Come on, he looks badass in his splash and then I can't even find his freaking head! Just my 2 cents. I still want to become better as Malphite! He's still cool!

Carniverous1 votes

Well with one of Vi's abilities, she hits a minion or person with such force it sends a shockwaves. Malph buddy here dose that with his W.

It's nice that on the Mech skin he gets huge knuckles that come on. But for all of them, I think dust should be scattered, the earth should crack and tremble beneath is elemental might! Mini Vi punches basically, but effecting the ground more.

I play Malphy item 3074, with just that, at level 18 I have 300 AD and I smack people around, wonderfully. I'm big, tanky, I HIT HARD, and I'm coming for you. I find it so weird that people go slightly mage, then almost full tank with him. Full tank is okay, you are ment to be taking damage only.

But building a RowA dosen't feel amazing. And dose not help the Fantasy that is implied. AP Malph is fun and all, ult-combo-hourglass and sit. Got a kill.

I like roaming the team fight, peeling or chasing. And best of all, rushing in with my ult to bring chaos.

He also looks and walks like A FREAKING TRIANGLE. Seriously, he takes a step, and has to raise his whole body and shoulder, and half wobble to places. People keep asking, "is that Malf's head or nose?" Goodness...

Retiylh1 votes

Malphite was the reason I enjoyed playing top lane so much; I loved him to death and spammed him in ranked games throughout season 4. I enjoy playing just as much right now and in recollection of my hundreds of malphite games I have to agree that he feels a little "insignificant" stature-wise.

As one of the most quintessential tanks of this game (in my opinion), his intended role as a beefy initiator/ad crippler doesn't mesh well with his body physique. To be honest I like his Q to remain as a cookie but in terms of its contrast, it could be improved. His W needs to avert the focus away from lighting and more on aethestic visuals (ex. stone pebbles start to levitate around his body and he becomes slightly bulkier). The same approach with his E, which I also find to be lackluster. Ground Slam has to be Malphite actually smashing the ground, not slapping it. In addition, using his E with his W active could add in those distortions that Ori's ult makes to show that it is empowered. His ult is fine, just that if I were to make a small change it would be upon hitting an enemy, rock chunks could break of him to imply its force.

When I play Malphite top and I'm responding to a jungle fight, when I arrive the enemies don't even run. I want the enemy to go like "oh snap its malph" instead of "it's just malph guys dw."
Malph can make an adc question their own champion's viability when he's on top of them so it would be amazing if he could just look as threatening as his kit is.

A new voiceover would be much appreciated.

"You will lose. You will lose. You will lose."

"Caught between a rock... and a hard place. Caught between a rock... and a hard place. Caught between a rock... and a hard place."

"I'm moving as fast as I can. Got it. Uh-huh. Sure. Yyyes. Going. I'm moving as fast as I can."

He's not as bad as, say, Rammus, but that really isn't a high bar.
