mages have too few choices for reaching cooldown cap

My favorite thing to play in this game is traditional mages, with high damage and control but lackluster mobility. Cooldown reduction allowed more regular access to their strengths, which made them a lot more fun to play, and sense the preseason started, it just isn't as available.

Before the preseason, buying a mana item and item 3158 would hit the cooldown cap. With the nerf to lucidity boots, and the cooldown masteries being placed too high in the middle tree to get if you specialize in the damage tree, you need to get additional items to achieve the cooldown cap.

there are currently 6 cooldown items which are really designed for ap champions; item 3174 ,item 3165 item 3152 item 3115 item 3100 item 3092 out of these, item 3115 and item 3100 are autoattack based, and many champs just dont have good synergy with them item 3092 is useful for its sheer utility, but in general isnt a very powerful item for a full mage

this leaves item 3174 item 3165 item 3152

morello and athenes occupy the same basic purpose in most cases: getting your mana to sustainable levels. Usually you would want to choose one or the other, as buying both will just overkill your mana regen and make you spend money on a stat you dont need more of.

Essentially, if you want max cooldown, you are forced into getting item 3174 or item 3165 + item 3158 + item 3152 . and unless your champ has the synergy with nashors or lich bane, or just go for tank items, its basically your only choice. This just feels bad, and has severely encroached on my enjoyment of my favorite position. I am fine with making the cap harder to achieve, as that is a reasonable power gauge considering the strengths of the class. But we really need some options for how we get there, either through additional items or masteries

then take into consideration item 3508 and u find ap mages have to sacrifice dmg to attain max cdr while adc's give up nothing. its so sad =(

Basically thats the idea of the season, lets make mages even harder to play. Leage of ADC is coming.

I just made a thread about item 3003 users being completely fucked out of CDR. They don't want or need mana regen but they stack a latent power item for 20 minutes only to have a bit more AP and no CDR. We need way more AP cdr items.

Agreed. Twin shadows, while rarely utilized, at least gave you an option if you wanted CDR, AP, and utility. I would argue there is room for at least two more items with CDR; maybe as a boot enchantment?

This. Options for cdr are SO limited. I have definitely found it frustrating when playing mages.

Also, buying Lucidity Boots in itself is a huge sacrifice in damage considering you pick that instead of 15 flat mpen

Well in this ad meta maybe item 3110 wouldn't be so bad on mages.

Probably not optimal for pure burst but for more dps oriented mages like Brand or Azir or Anivia This could very well work.

More tanky more mana and more cdr. We wont be having any real tanks in the frotnline this preseason so might aswell take item 3110 and kill two birds with one stone

How to fix this? Run cdr per level runes problem solved

I think that it may be fine to introduce a new item with high AP (100, i guess) and 10% CDR

CDR Glyphs and Quints are very cost effective also "mages" start in a solo lane meaning you don't have to run so many combat early stats unlike adc's/sup's who always live in threat of a good hook/grab/stun in the land of opportunities called bot lane. ("but adc's got ER op blah blah") Discussion over.
