Tips against yi?

Ao Dracona··12 votes·9,227 views

So yi is one of the most frustrating characters that I have played against so far He does true damage, his w gives him damage reduction, and he can go untargetable and spam that abilitiy. So I know I’m just gonna get the usual “just cc him” and “yi is actually really bad” like okay maybe yi isn’t in a good spot idk I don’t read patches that much, but he’s still unfun and stressful to play against. Not to mention his kit lets him never miss an ability so that’s basically free true damage on anyone he gets, like how tf can ppl say just cc him when he can go untargetable and 1v5 and when we focus him he has his team by his back so we are basically trying to target nothing and we die. I dcd becuz of internet issues once and when we get back our jungler (yi) just 1v5d their whole team while I was afk.

In conclusion what is the best way to deal with a master yi My roles are support and jungle

yi 1-5 camp his jungle, keep him underfed, 6-18 team co-ord attacks is a MUST, never try to solo, and never going into grass patches without wards also arbitrary to belief, building **armor **will not work vs him at all, instead build most damage and health as possible, and finally, never let him get red dragons

Armor, *Laughing in true damage, I meant overbuffed his E and Conqueror Rune.

Health if he is running conqueror. Armor if he is running anything else.

Ban if he tilts you. Everyone has that one champ that makes you immediately tilt.

Someone activatly asking for help for a champion on the forums? Holy shit, never though it would see the day.

On a serious note though, you want to not get to late game. Yi is one of the best scaling champions in the game so the best ways to beat him revolve around stomping him early before he reaches that spike.

As a jungler, counterjungling him is one strat you could attempt or you can use the fact that Yi is such a farm heavy jungler to constantly be ganking since his own ability to gank is fairly shit.

As a support, depending on the support, sometimes little other times a lot. Tahm and Thresh are good as they both provide decent enough non slow based cc to stop him and protect their allies. One’s like Sona and Soraka, not much.

What are some good tank items against yi? I usually play tahm in my support pool

Jamaree2 votes

Randuins and thornmail, bar none.

BIFF1 votes

If he stops fighting grab a zzrot. This item is so underused on supports.

Damn you must be depressed after the last patch notes then.

Yi actually has one of the strongest level 2 power spikes with red buff, so you may want to be wary about counterjungling too early. A common cheese by Yi mains is to take red and invade wolves to either kill the enemy jungler or just steal it. AFAIK, only Udyr and a Jax with his E up can deal with him then.

However, like most skirmishers, he's a 1v1 god lategame that cannot really teamfight unless he gets a good flank. CC totally fucks him up, not only because you possibly kill him with it, but because even if you don't when he goes tanky, Highlander only lasts 7 seconds. Because of that too, fuck item 2419, item 3157 and stealth.

Generally, the biggest rule is to keep him behind and to stay ahead of him.

Having a large amount of reliable CC is also useful.

Or, barring that, just have your top be a Nasus and press W on him. Nasus is always a massive threat to Yi, unless Nasus goes 0/5 or some shit like that.

but the AS reduction does

It does not.

ACTIVE: For 7 seconds, Master Yi gains bonus attack speed, multiplies his total movement speed and becomes immune to slows and cripples.

Shit, I thought it did.

Well crap. Edited. Nasus is still strong against him tho.

Yi rips nasus in half like a phone book unless yi built absolutely troll, what are you talking about?

Yi is one of like two champions who can reliably bend Nasus over a table 1v1 pretty much all game.

Nasus is a terrible pick into Yi.

Or you could just go kindred Kindred on him and then smash him early game while he is on lvl 1-2 after he gets his buff he is so easy to kill with kindred

The Ecdysiast2 votes

Unfortunately the one and only way to counter a champion who can deal upwards of 40% of his damage in true damage on-hit if you didn't specifically counter pick him, reducing his attack speed, doesn't work. He's immune to cripple.

Shen what autos? Makes an area immune to autos, taunt to stop him from gutting your allies, and R to shield them. Shen can support too

Junglers you need someone who can blow up Yi before he can fight for that long, or someone with CC. I've always used Warwick as my counterpick to yi. Damage reduction on his E, fear to CC, lifesteal and Q to heal more to outlast yi, you can break his meditate heal channel with your fear or ult, highlander doesnt make him immune to your 2 CCs and you're definitely the stronger duelist in the jungle 1v1 especially early on. Just bait out his Q before you R him

Most of the time when the fight starts open with Q and E to heal then reduce damage taken, let E go on for the max duration for damage reduction unless you can kill him while he's feared, then when he tries to heal with meditate then you can R him, especially since he's not moving you shouldn't miss. Stops his healing while you get to heal up off him

I've always been told to get more cs than him.

  • Fiddlesticks's Fear and Skarner's Ult are superb CC's against Yi.

  • Having another Skirmisher [ Tryndamere Fiora Yasuo ] in your team usually helps too.

  • Try to follow his steps to countergank him too. He doesn't have any escapes like LeeSin, which makes him very vulnerable to counterganks and early invades.

  • Teemo Early

He can eat your team alive quick if you don't have the CC to stop him. If you do, focus fire him if he goes in.

He's like a big grinding machine you need to pull the plug on to stop.

TempName548461 votes

just cc him 4Head

The Bad Touch1 votes

It really depends on what champ/role you are playing. Many will never reliably 1v1 a Yi.

For those that can it's honestly all about building around burst and understanding his Alpha Strike range.. and being aware of nearby minions.

Done get caught out and don't let your team get caught out. Yi can almost never jump into a group of five enemy champions and still live without his teammates. What happens is that his team or he catches out a carry and that gives him more time on his ult or weakens the enemy team to the point where he can fight then and win easily. You can't let this happen. Your tanks or enchanters need to hard peel for your carries even before he can get near them. Make sure that you have someone that does damage present when your team locks him down so you can kill him quickly. You could even catch him out as a tank when he's alone and get rid of him that way (Yis are cocky and they usually think they can 1v5 easily, so they don't play safe most of the time). JUST MAKE SURE YOUR TEAM IS NEARBY. If this advice doesn't work for you, then someone fed him too much and there's nothing you can do about it. That's out of your control then.

You could also play Dr. Mundo jungle and rush a Thornmail after your jungle item. Then you can 1v1 him easily.

For jungle Jax Rammus Udyr Tryndamere if you're good mechanically with them Rengar Graves can fight him too.

Support wise Alistar Blitzcrank Maokai Nautilus Malzahar and usually bring exhaust.

Do not throw out your cc at him before he alpha's, IF HE's in range of his target, if you can get to him before that do it. But if the yi goes all in and gets hit by a hard cc or exhaust than he pops. Most of the skirmisher suggestions are bad because there's very few champions that can out skirmish a yi if he knows what he's doing. Examples being trynd can obviously fight him because of R, jax because of E, graves can kite him if you're good enough at attack move and Rengar can outplay him if you're able to disengage with empowered E when he ults and then use your ultie to rengage when it expires.

There's obviously going to be more but these are just examples of the kind of strategies that shut down yi.

YI LOSES TO:

  1. CC of any kind

  2. Jax Udyr Warwick Tryndamere Amumu Graves Fiddlesticks

  3. item 3143 item 3110

  4. split pushes + item 2055 item 3340

  5. Counter jungling (steal his camps and he is done)

Any one of those 5 solutions turns your game into a 5v4 your favor

YI LOSES TO:

  1. CC of any kind

Skillshots and CC with a travel time are no good. He can alpha them.

2. Jax Udyr Warwick Tryndamere Amumu Graves Fiddlesticks

Yi has no trouble with any of those champions (other than Jax and Fid) because of Conq and Guinsoo. Yi can fairly easily burst Trynd so hard he has no choice but to ult, then disengage and wait it out. Funny enough, though, trynd vs yi is a skill matchup. Trynd has the tools to follow Yi if he's conservative with his cooldowns, and Yi has the tools to avoid those.

3. item 3143 item 3110

Yi R gives him cripple immunity.

4. split pushes + item 2055 item 3340

  1. Counter jungling (steal his camps and he is done)

Just make sure not to fight him when he's already started a camp. There are very few junglers who can actually fight a Conq'ed-up Yi

BIFF1 votes
  1. If yi holds alpha to dodge a skill shot you can kite him fairly easy.

  2. All of those champions counter yi because of supression and burst. For Yi to win any of those trades he needs. To be fed, uncontested in jungle, and have 3-4 items. Which means if you let him do that you dont know what ypur doing anyway.

  3. Maybe you didnt read those items. Randuins negates 20% all crit dmg and slows the attackers Atk spd. Even if he has R up you can make space. Easily countered.

  4. There are alot of junglers who shut down a conq'd up yi.

He is in no way an instant ein champ unless you are in bronze, afk for the first 10minutes, and let him run rampant because you dont know how to land an ability.

lol if yi can't get on you without alpha and you have CC, he has no business taking that fight

qss + he doesn't want to come to you; he wants you to come to him

3. Maybe you didnt read those items. Randuins negates 20% all crit dmg

a yi who builds crit is either a bad yi or a yi so far ahead that he knows there's nothing you can do

and slows the attackers Atk spd.

That's called a cripple. Yi R gives him cripple immunity.

  1. There are alot of junglers who shut down a conq'd up yi.

lol

of course he isn't. I'm saying this as a Yi player. Current Yi is countered by gameplay, Not builds and rarely by picks. Jax, Gragas, Fid, and invisibilities are counter picks. Champions who statistically counter Yi are champs who can apply much greater pressure. They don't fight him 1v1 (with few exceptions Jax Jax Jax )

Fertsa1 votes

Keep him behind and finish the game before he reaches critical mass Though his "critical mass" differs based on what build he's using, how much CC ur team has, etc. If Yi can go in and 1v5 ur team with literally no support then he's too big to handle already, and even though he is categorized as an "assassin" he is also a "fighter" with high base defensive stats, so your best bet is to lock him down before he can do things.

A tip: Yi is extremely vulnerable right when he gets out of Alpha Strike, so he'll usually only go in if he can get a fast reset, or is desperate to get damage done.

Friendly Ram1 votes

Jungle i likeFiddlesticks for q making his ult work against him. SupportLulu because ult+poly equals a dead yi.

SugeMinPikk1 votes

Yi will likely want to split push. Do not fight him while he is hitting minions. Do not fight him while he is hitting the tower. You will want to try to catch him between waves. He's fairly easy to handle when he doesn't have conq or guinsoo stacked up.

(also, do not use blue trinket when you're trying to catch him between waves. that's a free reset on his conq and guinsoo)

When he does have them stacked up, no fight is unfair for him. Don't take any fight against a stacked up Yi unless you're fed and/or have copious amounts of CC.

JAYCCCCCCCCCCCCE1 votes

Literally have nothing to tell you on how to counter yi except to burst him first.

No armor counters yi, no health counters yi, you can have 500 stacks as nasus @ 25 minutes and still get 1v1d by yi under tower. Only way to stop a yi is to out burst him by building damage.

SwiftKitten881 votes

champion to champion collision like Warwick ulti and Gragas body slam can hit him in alpha if timed properly
