Soul Shroud, Tanking, and You

Waaaaay back when, Soul Shroud was a Tank/Support item that granted a bunch of HP as well as an MP5 and CDR aura. This new incarnation is going to keep the hybrid Tank/Support nature, but we're going to try to make it a little more interesting.

item 3108 item 1011 item 3067 = Soul Shroud Grants 20% CDR, lotsa HP, some ability power, AND-! UNIQUE passive: Using a skill grants you and the lowest HP nearby allied champion a damage shield for 1.5 seconds equal to (percentage of your max HP? percentage of your bonus HP?). This effect has a 1.5 second cooldown.

So basically an anti-Spellblade effect. The idea here is to create an item for AP Tanks that folks like Jman would feel a little iffy about buying due to the ability power investment. It's become fairly clear at this point that building PURE defense even on AP Tanks isn't strictly a good idea, so we've got here an item that boosts their offense and utility with CDR/AP while augmenting their investment in defensive stats via the shield. Because the shield is also extended to one of your buddies, you can help them stay alive a little longer just by doing your job! Isn't that keen?

I think it shouldnt give ap, as it can be abused by tanky mages... vlad, rumble, ryze... Almost every other support item gives cdr so 20% is too high i think. Anyway im ok with concept.

It isn't strictly a Support item.

More properly, it's a Tank/Support item. It would be just as valuable on someone like Nautalus as it would be on Leona or Braum.

Main different between a true Support item (like Crucible or Face of the Mountain) and a Tank/Support item (like Frozen Heart or this new Soul Shroud) is that the former provides a clutch benefit to one of your allies while the latter provides an over-time bonus. Basically, as long as the Tank is alive, their Tank/Support item is going to continue making their team mates harder to kill.

The ability power is on here primarily to help out AP Tanks like Naut or Sej. If it were a purely defensive item then you would be more likely to see it on Jman or V or Lee Sin and we're trying to avoid that. The AP is there to bump up the cost and make it less attractive to Fighter/Tanks and Tank/Fighters while making it more attractive to Mage/Tanks and Tank/Mages. Someone like Swain grabbing it is expected and encouraged, he would be getting more defense and WAY less offense than what he would be gaining from Morello's.

Every mage would add this to their build though. And think of how OP Vladimir can be already....this would unbalance him horribly imo.

Well, you would be getting somewhere between 30 and 40 AP out of it. Look at the components on this thing, it's a pretty major investment for such a small return on ability power. To contrast, Rod of Ages would be in a similar price range while giving at least twice the ability power, comparable HP, and some nice mana to boot.

I doubt someone like Azir would be interested in it, but I can totally see Swain buying this thing.

As for Vlad, guy still needs a remake. I'm shocked Riot has left him alone for so long.
