"X is balanced, you just need to counterpick"

Daedalus871··62 votes·4,895 views

That is not a valid argument for two reasons:

  1. You don't always get to counter pick. Red side has a guaranteed counter pick. Blue side, does not. So if you have a way to always end up on red side, then you can use this, but most of us have a 50/50 chance of ending up on blue side. And this isn't even going into nondraft modes.
  2. Sometimes you're counterpick isn't always good for your team. For an example, let's say my team is something like Mao top, Rek jg, Ahri mid, Morg sup and the enemy ADC is Vayne. Now I could counter pick Vayne with something like Caitlyn, but the rest of my team is practically begging me to pick Sivir. I realize this wasn't the best example since Vayne isn't strong right now and counterpicks mean less to ADCs than other champs, but the principal stands.

Really, the only time when counterpicks means a champ is not OP is when every champion counters them. Of course that's pretty much limited to Poppy and Karthus, so not really a valid point.

Edit: Posts that I like:

Plus counterpicking should make for an easier matchup, not a damn near requirement to not just die

Darius

It's either you counterpick him or he automatically wins lane through brute force. Such a terrible design.

Darius is fine. The reason why he's not viable is because his scaling is horrible. That's why he's never played in LCS.

Never said he was viable. Just said that he makes the game miserable for you, even if you end up winning (which happens more often than not, at least if your team knows how to kite.)

Don't be mad at Darius. He, like his other siblings Zyra Zed Thresh Yasuo Kalista, were created solely for the purpose of making everyone's lives miserable when you have to play against them.

Eh, I can see how all the other CertainlyT champions can be problematic, but I have never felt that Zyra was ever obnoxious to play against. If anything, I consider her very balanced.

She was apparently much stronger when she was first released, and she's been nerfed since then into a much better spot.

Release Zyra was GODLY. They hit her with the nerfbat HARD to put her where she is now. Old Zyra basically won every teamfight she sneezed at with her combo of AoE burst and hard CC. They gimped her damage and stats LOT since then.

Teemo is easy to beat, if you know how he works. He's supposed to hard counter Vayne, but a Vayne of equal skill can destroy Teemo.

ElJanitorFrank1 votes

I know he's easy to beat, my whole point was that he is irritating to lane against. I have no problems against teemo, he just pisses me off because of how little I can interact with him during laning phase, and yet he can interact with me the whole time.

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

He's talking about a designer named CertainlyT's champs. All of those are extremely overpowered (at least at launch) and even after nerfs, they still remain viable. Teemo is annoying, but not to the point where he's anywhere near OP.

ElJanitorFrank1 votes

Yasuo was balanced at launch. He had a complicated kit so no one knew how to play him, and they gave him buffs. THEN he became a problem.

And it's saying those champions make your experience miserable, even if you win. Not that they are/were overpowered.

Focus Teemo2 votes

Winning lane is completely unimportant in the larger scheme of things. It isn't necessary... just DO NOT lose it. Which contrary to what you think is NOT hard.

Hell Nasus a champion that might as well be a siege minion early game, wins roughly 48%(-source -) of the time against him overall. Again a doge based champion many people believe to be countered by none other than the dunk master himself... basically wins half the time against him anyway(This matchup is easier then people think).

Seriously what makes Darius so annoying for you to lane against? Sure he's strong but hes hardly even the most lane dominate melee champion, let along the most dominate in the entire game( Pantheon is a much bigger lane bully for example ). He has no sustain, mana issues, lacks any mobility or escapes, and barely has enough range via decimate or apprehend to worry about. Hell what does his slow matter when everyone has flash, and or a dash these days? FURTHERMORE if flash AND OR a dash was NOT enough to get you out of his reach and under your tower, why did you push so far up against a dangerous champion in the first place, unless you could fight him directly(This is a mistake no other way to look at it)? He's not naturally tanky, and he isn't particularly good at diving or roaming either... so there really isn't that much he can do. You legitimately just have to recognize when he has an advantage over you(which applies to alot more than just Darius), back off, and play accordingly. Hell simply backing off will often cause Darius to push, resulting in you being under or near your tower(exactly what you want), Darius being overextended and therefor close to dead... as he again has NO ESCAPES for when hes inevitably ganked for recklessly pushing. Furthermore YES this does mean you HAVE to drop some CS, as its NOT worth your life(you're worth more gold than a minion kill). Believe me as an avid Nasus player it hurts to not get that CS, but you have to know it isn't always worth it... and they're counting on you to NOT understand that. Not to mention were talking about a champion that often builds damage first, making him squishier early than most other top laners. Even if he kills you once or twice, you will eventually outscale him with almost anything(Just not losing lane, is more or less a victory because of this). Seriously i find it harder to LOSE lane against him, literally just have to have PATIENCE(its a virtue... and a requirement for late game champs)!

SERIOUSLY just DON'T throw yourself at him and expect to win in lane(hell this goes for any lane bully).

While were at it i could explain a simple trick to dodge apprehend nearly 70% of the time or more, if people would like... i'm sure people already know this, but who knows, maybe it will help someone.

Frikgeek1 votes

He just makes your life miserable if you're playing a melee champion. His earlygame stats are absolutely ridiculous, he gets 30 fucking base armor at level 1(that's without runes or masteries), second only to Rammus. Add in the fact that his Q outranges basically all melees and is his main source of damage, the fact that he deals a ton of magic, physical, and true damage and you get why playing a melee champion against him is torture. His base stats mean you can't fight him and the range on his Q mean you can't really farm melee creeps without eating it. It just makes you want to sigh every time you go for a cs and he Qs like 1/6th of your HP is gone after the bleed is over. And there's nothing you can do about it, even if he misses his Q you still can't out-trade him, all you can really do is suffer through it and wait for lategame or until he finally runs oom(gl with that if he starts flask+2hp+1manapot).

It's not hard, it's just really unsatisfying, as earlygame you lose no matter what and lategame you beat him no matter what. It's binary and dumb.

Focus Teemo1 votes

My forte IS melee, and i stopped respecting Darius long ago.

"It's binary and dumb"

Clearly you have never played Tryndamere or Pantheon against him... NOW THEY ARE DUMB lol(and in Tryndamere's case... literally binary). Pantheon starts long sword(or boots) and mana pots, pokes him into next weak, blocks his Crippling Strike with his passive, gets him low then murders him. Oh but he uses apprehend, and pulls you? Stun him, spear him in the face for even trying such foolishness, swag walk away.... then spear him again! Statistically supported too http://champion.gg/champion/Darius Did i mention this was actually a FUN matchup... well for Pantheon anyway lol. Pantheon spear range > Decimate range(his Q).

How to crush Darius as Tryndamere. Get an attack speed rune page, hit minions to build rage, roll for initiative. OK this is important... dId you crit? Yes... proceed to win game by right clicking him to death. No... fucking Rito reroll pls. Get to level six Undying range makes his Noxian gullotine completely useless. In fact Tryndamere is so binary this applies to almost everyone. There's a saying "a Tryndamere who crits in lane... wins the lane".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9qcc1Evlkk

If Rohammer's Tryndamere beating a Hecarim in lane, in a Challenger game doesn't prove my point about him, i don't know what will."I will show them who is the best right-clicker" - Anklespankin playing Tryndamere.

Riven is also a fun favorable skill match up into Darius (also supported by stats). Garen does better then you think(Not in your favor, but still mostly even). Zed pre-shadow nerf dumpstered him in lane completely(technically melee). Yorick is technically melee (Darius only wins 35% of the time against him ROFLMAO). Wukong evidently dumpsters him according to the data. Renekton is a skill match up(In Ren's favor). Maokai... Not even gonna bother explaining why this works(and is also supported by stats). Irelia does ok early, dumpsters him late(supported by stats). Oh but she's not good enough because you can't kill him pre-six.. oh my bad. Fiora actually out facerolls Darius, and doesn't need Tryndamere's luck. Thing is... Darius generally wins this one mid to late game imo lol(she wins even according to the data). Lee sin... if you land Q... YOU WIN(No really lee is stronger at EVERY point of the game... just ask Blem). http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/43146839 (yes he DOES play Lee top... well alot of the time). Fizz is technically melee... and has the edge in this lane imo. Hercarim is Hecarim... he does ok(and is a good pick overall) Rumble is technically melee... If Rumble is any good... wins 100% of the time basically(Gets played all the time in pro play and high elo... no one plays him in low elo still lol). Sion does fine in general. Taric... people aren't ready for the gems... there truly outrageous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XMSTh70xps

Also believe it or not Darius can win late game... Nasus, Kassadin, etc. don't always win late game either.

Frikgeek1 votes

Tryndamere isn't even a real example here... he wins against everyone if the RNJesus is on his side. A lot of the other champions are only technically melee. Sure they need to get into melee range to do most of their damage, but they have a spammable ranged skill they can lasthit or poke with, that's more than enough against Darius. Rumble has a mostly ranged kit, the only melee thing about him is his autoattack.

Riven can work after lvl 6, but before that you just get out-statted. Darius base stats completely trump yours in every category that matters. Base AD, hpregen, hp, and armor. Then again, Riven is also kindof a problem champion. Her base stats might be super shit but her abilities are very strong and very easy to use.

Idk how you came to the conclusion that Fizz has the advantage in that lane, sure he can cancel darius ult with his pole but it doesn't even put it on cooldown, it just gives you a second more to escape while Darius comfortably farms up. The early damage from Darius passive will in most cases be too much for Fizz, even if he has flask.

Fiora is just a lane-losing machine in the current meta. Sure, you can out-faceroll a Darius 1v1, but at least he's going to build tanky and not just be a sitting duck for the cinderhulk junglers. Fiora is going to go full damage and remain both squishy, easy to catch, autopushing, and melee(so she has to get closer to the wave). That is a tank jungler's dream gank.

Your own experience is basically useless as you don't even play ranked, and the fact that some high Elo players have their niche picks they rape with doesn't mean everyone else can just learn to play Lee like Blem even if they're in a similar rating.

Idk what stats you're talking about, but I've tried searching for stats that only show how ahead of their lane matchup a certain champion is by 10 minutes sorted by ranking and I haven't been able to find any. Obviously full-game stats are meaningless in determining how infuriating a champion is to lane against, as most extreme lane bullies fall off and can't really carry(especially from toplane). Maybe there are tears shed/min graphs I can look up.

You'll notice I never used any superlatives and haven't implied that Darius is "the worst" or "the most infuriating" champion to lane against. I'd say Pantheon is even worse as a melee because of his retarded spear and shield.

Focus Teemo1 votes

I'm glad you at least took the time create a post explaining your opinion, although i don't think it effectively accomplishes much. I will try to explain why. NOTE: Skip to the to TL:DR if you want the short version(which i recommend).

I will first start off by saying i provided the link with data compiled from platinum rank matches and above. http://champion.gg/champion/Darius I also included Taric and the video as a joke(granted SoloQ magic is a thing). **Note: **I have a portion to the bottom talking about the stats, and usefulness(or lack of) in greater detail towards the bottom!

The big problem i have is your entire post largely only validates my own(we seem to be in agreement over a great many things hilariously enough). For example you stated Tryndamere is an RNG machine... which is exactly my point. Tryndamere is OBJECTIVELY MORE binary than Darius, and takes even less effort to win lane with. Which the post i was replying to stated, Darius "always wins against melee, and is to binary". I stated why Tryndamere is even worse, and completely disproves the "beats everything melee" superlative(more so then Pantheon even, as he is entirely melee and has no poke). Its magnified by the fact Tryndamere will actually lose lanes for the exact same reasons, as he's entirely reliant on rolling natural 20s as it were. Him being more annoying than Darius is entirely subjective, and i'm inclined to think this... especially because he's just going to splitpush ALL game, and he does so quickly.

You stated Fiora is a lane losing machine(I think shes rubbish as well), but also completely agreed with me that she is indeed more faceroll. Fiora can and will win beat Darius at his OWN game. You then went on to how she will be repeatedly ganked, for the very same reasons that make Darius himself a weak champion, which i stated in my previous post. I also agree she is prone to being ganked, and i DON'T believe alot of these picks are any good, for the reasons we have both mentioned. I also figured someone would say something about the viability of the picks, however you have to take in mind Darius himself is NOT viable currently or in meta. My point was simply to disprove said superlative, that so many hold to be an undeniably fact... in which it clearly isn't. I'm also clarifying that there are indeed champions with worse designs. Fiora herself is getting reworked for this reason.

"Rumble has a largely ranged kit", i agree and stated he was technically melee in parentheses, as i also did with Zed and Yorick. None of which will engage him in melee combat directly, all of which win through doing so. It technically IS cheating by my own rules, so i can respect that you called me out on that.

You state that Riven is a problematic champion herself. Of which i agree, however this has nothing to do whatsoever with the subject matter at hand. Furthemore you again did not even present a counterargument, other than you believe Darius will out stat her in a match up. I stated it was a skill match up, which according to data Riven generally wins. She can beat him pre-6 with the strength of her abilities, and she can also lose pre-6. Not much more to say.

I took a shot at the you and others, when i mentioned Irelia. As i am annoyed by the constant whining, and used her as another example of a champion that will beat Darius by the mid to late game. However its evidently only important to the people that they win early, and not the complete lane or game. This once again contradicts my own rules, however i did so intentionally.

You state some players have niche picks such as my former example of Blem's Lee top, and we can't necessarily reproduce this success. This is mostly true as we can't expect to just learn their playstyle over night, however this isn't a good reason as to not learn how this works, and it doesn't mean it can't or won't work should someone try it. Even if we are talking about Lee sin which is by most accounts one of the more difficult champion to pick up and learn. However it has to be again mentioned. Lee can not only defeat Darius pre-6, he can avoid ganks easily, sustain in lane, scales far better, etc. The fact he is melee and wins early(provided he is being played right of course), puts him within the parameters used in the discussion; still proving my point.

You eventually take a shot at my rank(or lack there of), which is both a waste of time and completely redundant. Regardless of elo a point is neither proven nor dis proven on this basis, as elo has nothing to do with the legitimacy of a balance discussion. You could be ranked #1 in the world or 10 million, it doesn't make your points any more or less valid.

Finally you state overall game stats are pointless as they don't prove or deny the frustration players go through while facing a particular champion. You of course are right about this, however it still doesn't disprove the points made in my previous posts, or what i was really going for. If the subject OP presented was "IS Darius annoying to lane against"? Well that is completely subjective, and i personally don't mind him. Of course i'm aware many do find him annoying. Finally where are we even going with this? This started over counterpicks and champion balance, moved to a specific champions design, where i started by making humorous points and examples to disprove superlatives... now we're arguing over how we should feel, when it's not a valid basis for a reasonable argument? Although i appreciate the stat joke it was quite clever. Oh and don't worry i'll talk to Riot about adding an "annoying bar" to gauge that stat, as it is evidently all that matters... and of course Darius will have a 10/10. However i'm not sure that's the best reason to hold something against a champion, especially when they're not even the best at what they do. I guess where gonna have to agree to disagree. Even if you got this far... read the TL:DR.

**TL:DR ** Lets actually just agree to disagree, as we clearly agree on most points. The conflict is largely from a subjective standpoint. We can't exactly argue how you're supposed to feel about lane bullies... unless you have a degree in psychology? Either way with out the superlatives there isn't much left to talk about.

Frikgeek1 votes

Just to clarify, your rank doesn't disprove or make your points right, it just makes your personal in-game experience less valid. For example, your points are just as valid as anybody else's, but when you say things like "I personally don't fear darius" or "I personally beat him most of the time" it does have less value if you're only playing less serious games mostly for fun.

Also, trying to imitate Blem and actually playing like him are 2 completely different things(same for any other high elo off-meta mains). You'd need at least 300 games on Lee top, probably more, to even get near the amount of experience you need to make lee top work consistently in diamond 1 or master.

Again, the stats you linked don't even show gold advantage/min against a specific matchup, which is the only stat even close to useful in this situation. I've been in a Riven vs Darius matchup a lot of times, and it's pretty much impossible to trade with him before lvl 6(if he starts cloth+5, ofc). Obviously I'm not the best Riven ever but I have never found that matchup anywhere near "fun". Even when you get a kill pre-6 it's mostly because Darius fucked up and missed a Q while you still had decently high HP. It's his lane to lose, not yours to win. After 6 it's still dumb, you don't even have to try to win the lane. Just all-in him whenever he shows his face and you'll win. I actually like matchups Like Kenen and Lissandra and other ranged counters, simply because they have an interesting dynamic. Darius just out-stats people until they level up and wreck him with their abilities. Seriously, a toplaner doesn't need the 2nd highest base armor in the game. It feels like Darius has to pay pretty much everywhere in his kit if we wants to keep those stats. Maybe if some of these were toned down he could be given a less annoying, but more useful kit. Though to be fair, it's not just his base armor, his base Hpregen is retarded too. He has the 3rd highest value in the game at lvl 1, behind Heimer and only slightly behind Sion at lvl 1, but he overtakes him at lvl 3. Darius passively regens 120+ hp per minute.

I guess my final points are: RNG is dumb, Champions with only 1 option(full melee all in) are dumb, 30 base armor is too fucking much, and Pantheon who starts flask and some manapots is even dumber.

Focus Teemo1 votes

Glad were agreeing, and you're right.

If your wondering about the stats, that was just a part elaborating on the previous post, as a basis for the rest. No new info was added. Anyway moving on...

would like to add one last thing before i'm done for tonight tho.

Darius' design really isn't the best obviously(although not the worst), and if they decreased his base armor for scaling i imagine it would be better. In fact if they moved alot of his power around he might be a better pick, and a more tolerable champion to boot(lower base damages early, up late game). While were on the subject i'm not sure the more extreme late and early game focused champions are a good idea overall anyway. Darius is the type that removes alot of player interaction early or wins otherwise in many cases, but is fairly useless afterwards, and someone like Nasus would be the opposite. These windows in the game in which they are useless, and in which they are overbearing is not healthy. Darius(and friends) might make you feel powerless to do anything early, and its depressing. While Nasus(and friends) will exert stress on the player, forcing you to make mistakes and be miserable, as he will outscale you just buy not losing. One prompts you to hide, then turn the tables. The other forces you to babysit them, before they turn the tables. In both cases you're generally out gunned, and the counterplay is worse than bad... its boring. That's just my two cents tho.

Also fully agreed on Pantheon with pots!

Only Play Darius1 votes

Well I main Nasus which is part of the reason I hate Darius. I know not to feed him, I don't push my wave, the reason I hate the matchup is because it isn't a skill matchup, there is nothing Nasus can do about Darius early-mid game and if it's a good Darius, Nasus will be so starved of stacks that he won't be able to deal with him late game either. I always let Darius push my lane so he is vulnerable to ganks, and when my jungler camps for me I usually end up destroying Darius, but the actions of my jungler are not something under my control, and that's infuriating. In my elo (Bronze5) I frequently have games where Darius is sitting under MY turret for 10 straight minutes and my jungler doesn't help at all. Unlike other champs, he can deny me some stacks under turret because he can pull me out of it's range.

I'll tell you the real deal. If Teemo gets ganks, then Darius is done for. If this is just an Island (meaning that the enemy Jungler and Ally Jungler focus on other lanes besides top lane), Darius will win majority of the time (I won't say all the time because some Darius players might make a critical mistake). All Darius needs is one item and it is over for Teemo item 3155. Once you have this item, Teemo will shit in his pants when he sees that you have a fat 250 magic damage shield and Dunkrius proceeds to do D DUNK! If Teemo dies in lane (by himself), he will be forced to farm and not fight, but that is where Darius can excel/build up his lead even further. How? Teemo has 500 attack range. His Q has 580 range. Darius's pull has the range of 550 (1)*. If Teemo auto attacks you, he will get pulled. If Teemo blinds you, well that is fine. Darius will just walk ahead of Teemo with the 5% Movement speed buff from Hemorrhage. Darius's damage is very high. If you are afraid of shrooms? Don't worry, just back off and farm + wait for Cooldowns (on your abilities). He will have to farm either way or Darius will freeze lane. (NOTE: Darius is still prone to pushing the wave by Decimating but, if Darius makes sure that he only Q's Teemo and not the wave..this is very hard to do though, then Teemo will have to rely on his team to carry him.) Once you get item 3156, He just have to AFK. His Health pool is very very small. If he doesn't build hp items, then a level 6/11 full damage Ult and Ignite can take away around 50-65% or even 70-80% of his total hp! Then again, it is all about the circumstances in that particular match-up.

But Mr.Darius, Teemo have SO MUCH MOVEMENT SPEED!

No worries, you can trade 4.5 Physical Damage (2x AD QUINTS) for 3% ms quints (2x MS QUINTS). Teemo will have to come close to Auto Attack you and/or minions. If you know that Teemo is coming to auto attack you, you make sure you walk right in front of him and take care of the rest #D D8NKS!. If Teemo flashes away, by then, Darius's Q will be up, so, you flash, Q, then that 5 bleed stacks will reset so that is equivalent to 10 seconds of 5 stacks bleed (Assuming that Teemo flashed from Darius when he has 5 bleed stacks because he is around 40% Health). Darius can Ult and let the bleed be refreshed and let the bleed "bleed him out".. or Ignite him and let him bleed solely from DoTs. (BE WARNED! I've made so many mistakes by using Ignite when all I need to do is auto attack any low health champion once. Use ignite if you are gonna All-in him where he might be at around 60-70% hp.

But Mr. Darius, I'm building SO MUCH Health! Here, I'll show you what I'm building:item 3010/item 1011 (into item 3027/item 3116).

Well, Mr. Who ever you are, that is a big mistake. It is very hard to counter-build against Darius (because he has True Damage from Ult, Magic damage DoT from his Passive and Physical Damage from his Q, W, and his Auto attacks). If you feel like his True damage is the cause of you dying to him and you think to yourself," Why don't I just build straight up Health"? Well, you gotta worry about his Physical Damage and Magic Damage. What if i build item 3191? Well that will mitigate Darius's Q and W's damage a bit, but then, you have to deal with his Magic damage and his True Damage. You should also remember that you are building straight up Armor without Health to back up your stats.

Now when it comes to late game, it really depends. If Teemo Q's your ADC, then he did a very good job BUT, if Darius pulls someone (it could be either the Jungler. If you do pull him/her in, you can have a HIGHER chance of securing Baron or Dragon. It could also be the ADC. ADCs are just like babies. You scare them, they will scream...and by scream i mean using summoner 4, summoner 7 Then Q W E R..depending on the champ that is. It could also be the APC! Problem is that you need to make sure you and your team CC her/him hard..after they Zanyas. Then the APC can waste her/his Summoner Spells or die while using them) in unexpectedly, well now that's free summoner spells from that lucky hook (What upThresh) or a dead one.

Last but not least, Ganks. Like I said, if Teemo gets ganks, then it will be a bit more difficult for Darius to kill Teemo in lane. If Darius gets ganks, then something is wrong, because Darius can handle Teemo by himself. Your Jungler can profit way more by ganking bot or mid and getting them fed.

What if Teemo gets that lucky summoner 14 kill? Well..to be honest, I know how hard it is to face an opponent with Ignite, when you have summoner 12. You either lose that 1v1 because of that Ignite or you can make #D Pl4YS with Teleport. I've never lost to a Teemo with Ignite because I end up taking Ignite against him summoner 14.

(NOTE: Darius is such a Champ that if you take Ignite, your kill potential sky-rocket(s) so high. Why would you say that Mr. Shitrius? Here is the explanation why. Darius has his bleed ticking and ticking you for around 24-39 magic damage each second (Assuming that Darius is level 6-11+). If you are a champion that has self-heal (but you don't, Teemo...Hue Hue), that ignite will destroy that sustain. Now you have 2 DoTs (Damage over Time) hanging on your head. One from True Damage and one from Magic damage. That combo alone has the potential of dealing 400 to 500 "Mixed Damage".

That is the whole truth of Teemo vs Dunkrius Top Lane

Tl;DR Brah, Cmaan! Don't be lazy and just read the post.

Agreed Teemo and Darius go about 50-50 imo, if not in Darius' favor most of the time. One of the big deciding factors in this match is how Teemo plays pre-6, and the junglers(If Teemo gets shut out or killed pre-6 by the jungler its over for him). Most Teemos for whatever reason can't comprehend that they're NOT a poke mage, what wave control or freezing is, what punishing is, and their window's of opportunity. Darius can be run into the ground by Teemo pre-six, if played properly(Teemo is commonly played by morons, trolls, and ragers lets be honest). As Teemo does quite a bit of damage with just his auto attacks, however given the chance Darius will be able to overwhelm him, and can do short trades with Decimate. The thing is Teemo has sustained magic damage, and if he can set up fights, dodge apprehend, and punish Darius enough early or outright kill him, he stands a good chance of winning the game(If Darius misses apprehend Teemo pretty much owns the lane for 20ish seconds). However as most Teemo's are again morons, they will do short trades or weak harass(using their Q to poke and backing away, making themselves vulnerable to counterattack while its on CD), let Darius get enough farm for his hexdrinker exactly as he needs it, push far to hard when they shouldn't, and die to a swift all in. Teemo has one more advantage in that It's also harder for Darius to recover than Teemo. Either way this match generally wins with whoever can get a small advantage over the other, and more often then not i find its Darius. As Darius i believe is generally played by the smarter of the two summoners and will snowball the lead(your post pretty much sums up every reason why Teemo loses, if Darius gets the advantage), although i believe Teemo himself as a champion to have the advantage. Overall its a matchup that's much different than people might expect.

I thought Teemo counters Darius, typically anyone who has ranged damage can shit on him during the laning phase (at least what I have heard).

Teemo is easy as Darius, in my experience.

The key is taking tanky masteries, running teleport (you don't need ignite), and rushing movement speed.

There is absolutely zero chance Teemo can 100-0 Darius before Darius does the same to him unless Teemo is massively ahead. With a phage and boots Teemo isn't so scary.

Put those 2 together in top lane and you usually have an indestructible killing machine.

Circle jerking aside, there's really no champion in league whom you can only beat with a counterpick. Every single champion has room to be outplayed and outthought. Some just need more efforts than others. Remember, its more efficient to work smart than to work hard.

Counter picking is your second line of defense against a champion, after banning. Since every champion can be countered it is a viable option to use when avaliable. After counter picking comes counter building, team strategy and finally lane strategy.

For your first point you're missing one big thing; red team's last pick rarely gets to counter pick. All four of their team members lock in their roles first, so the odds of Red team's last pick being the one who plays Ekko is ridiculously low. It's a very small chance, but it's also not a problem unique to Ekko. If you take anything away from this please let it be that red side does not really have an advantage in draft champion select.

Point 2, however, isn't even remotely valid. Outside of ADCs there are far more options for counter picking and counter play. You need AP poke? You can chose anyone from Xerath to Diana depending on what your team needs in other areas like tankyness and engagement. You can pick flexibly depending on what you both need in lane and what your team needs you to accomplish at all stages of the game.

  1. I don't understand why you are assuming red team is playing suboptimally. I also don't get where you're getting Ekko from as I had not mentioned him in this thread. While it is true that this thread was inspired by the other thread, it is about counterpicking in general not being the final determination of OPness. As there is only one guaranteed counterpick out of 10 players, saying a champion is not OP due to counters is not valid.

  2. Is valid. Let's say the rest of my team is AP heavy and squishy and I am top lane. Since they are squishy, I want a megatank, and since they are AP heavy, I want an AD champ. The number of AD megatanks are fairly limited. In fact, it's pretty much just Sion. Sure there are other AD tanks, but they aren't megatanks. Sivir is pretty much the only ADC who does what she does, same thing with Thresh, and somewhat tanky AD poke is limited to Jayce and Urgot. With 2 or 3 adjectives, you've narrowed the champion pool to 1 or 2 champs.

  1. I'm stating how things actually are played. It's very rare for a team to actually discuss what to do ahead of time and work to get their most valuable role picked last. You are the one describing the outlying situation here.

  2. No team will ever need a megatank. A regular tank will fill every requirement that said team needs. We're talking needs here, not wants. Garen, Wukong, Darius, Olaf, and Jarvan all fill the role this team needs just fine.

As I already said ADC is the least flexible role, so this does not completely apply to it. However unless you're trying to get so specific that no champion can do another's job Blitz has just as much disruption as Thresh, and Janna has just as strong of peeling.

That said you're still being limited by your other team members. If you team forces you to play tanky, AD, and poke all in one champion your team is the one I've described in point 1. Other champions can and should handle one of those things so that it opens up your own pick to be far more flexible. Flexibility is a team effort after all.

  1. You can't guarantee a counter pick. And pretty much any argument you make can be flipped around.
  2. Sometimes, you need a niche champion, and those times aren't all that uncommon.

huh?

  1. because its soloq, you gonna have stuff like ad teemo top, quinn adc, mid darius (taking this one from another post about people not respecting pick order xD lol). Yes people are going to pick suboptimally most of the time, if not all the time. They will rarely trade. and all this is assuming they are playing a role they are comfortable with. You are correct about only 1/10 have a clear counter pick option, but more often then otherwise, it doesnt real mean anything. In fact, people have often picked bad matchup and still came out ahead in their matchup, because the game isnt 5 1v1s, but 1 big 5v5, and you never know what could happen.

  2. ? not sure i get the reasonning about they are ap so i have to play ad ? a mega tank in fact will do jsut as well since he would mostly need to stack resist, + if you are going tank anyway, you arent going to be building too much ad so its really irrelevant, specially when you think about maokai that can heal up the more people cast stuff around him, mundo with all his regen vs low constant dps. Tanks that do well against ap squishies : Gnar, Maokai, Mundo, Sion, Shen/Shyvana/Singed/Cho'Gath are okay options too. if they are squishies, you dont necessarly need a tank either, Kassadin/Galio/etc can do very well top lane against heavy ap compositions due to their kit/itemization. In the end, i just though about 10 options for top lane that work well for your situation. Maybe the problem isnt counterpick possibilities, but you not looking at the big picture as a whole (including possible good picks for the matchup/teamcomp)?

perfect example of what people don't want, actually

to put it in your terms, it would be more like "I want to be able to have a chance at beating paper as rock OR scissors"

which is still a trash analogy relating to league, since in league nothing should only have one counter

Good thing nothing in League really only has one counter.

And see, I'm glad you didn't actually understand the analogy, because you answered with "I want to be able to have a chance at beating paper as rock OR scissors"... that's not how basic balancing works. That's when skill comes into play. You don't balance A and B so they can both beat C on the same terms, otherwise there's no point in having A, B and C.

Rock, paper, scissors is the perfect epitome of balance... and you want to essentially break it.

Daedalus8711 votes

You still should have a chance of beating the them even if you got countered. It may not be easy, it may take a large skill difference, and it may take some ganks, but it still should be reasonably possible.

And you do. I've beaten Yorik's as Teemo before, which is a very bad match up for Teemo.

But with the amount of Champions (meaning more than having 3), it's a mathematical impossibility to not have some instances where X Champion is almost always a 0 / 10 match up against some other Champions.

Hell, even Street Fighter still has matches that are 0 / 10 or nearly 0 / 10 and their roster is what... not even a quarter of LoL's.

If you actually want every single Champion to be "reasonably able" to defeat their direct counters then... I'm sorry, you really don't understand balancing in the first place. It's called a "counter" for a reason. Counters naturally make something harder for you to do. If you pick a 0 / 10 Champion against your opponent then you have to expect that you are going to face a very, very tough match and that you have to more than likely wait until laning is over or just get tons of ganks until you are actually helpful.

there is no counterpicks or bad matchups. sure against some champs and compositions its harder to do the thing you would favor to do, but your champ can always do other things that are then good against that comp or will still help you to win the game. if he cant do any of that, its just a bad champ. good champs can play against all matchups and help their team in many ways.

Daedalus8713 votes

No, counterpicks do exist. Nasus struggles against Riven, Vlad against Fiddlesticks, and Sivir against Vayne. That doesn't make any of them good or bad, but they are going to have a tough time.

Daedalus8715 votes

Look, if you get a Diamond 1 Riven Main, and a Diamond 1 Nasus main, get them to play that match up 100 times, Riven is probably going to win at least 75% of the time. Her kit just let's her do well against Nasus. Hence she counters him. However, just because Riven exists and counters Nasus, it doesn't mean that Nasus isn't overpowered or frustrating to play against.

Dunkrius2g1 votes

But then it all depends on the jungler. If jger feels like making Nasus suicide, he will camp that lane. But be warned of that cuz your bot lane might go out of control (in feeding) or ur mid lane.

However, just because Riven exists and counters Nasus, it doesn't mean that Nasus isn't overpowered or frustrating to play against.

Riven is annoying to face against. Nasus is far worse than Riven (assuming that it reaches late game). Why? Riven is an all-in champ. she has a LOT of damage and some good cc and good defense and basically everything any champion DREAMS of, but once shes on cds, there is that 3 second delay (you are probably wondering why i typed 3 second delay. Her Shield late game will have around 300-450ish every 3-4 seconds..yes this champion will always have 40% CDR) where the ADC can shit on her once and for all. Nasus on the other hand has this:

Remember, Late game nasus.

20% Lifesteal.

A Q that deals Tons of Damageitem 3078. (If stacked well but if you survived lane for 10 minutes and did not died and u r farming ur Q, your opponent already lost that lane)

A Wither that is VERY STRONG and can fuck up the ADC. Slowed to death and attack speed reduction. (solution from that is to build and only build item 3140, otherwise , u r fked.)

His Spirit Fire has the FLAT armor penetration of 2 item 3142. Thats right, 2 item 3142 .

His Ult makes him even more tankier, gives him more damage, and that makes him deadly by building item 3110 or item 3075.

The only way to kill him is to have HARD CC. I mean this type of CC:Urgot Ult,Malzahar Ult,Skarner Ult, Warwick Ult, and lat but not least Nautilus's whole kit. Im just kidding you dont need that much but you need enough to kite him but it will take atleast 5-10 seconds to kill Nasus late game.

Oh yeah i forgot, he will always have 40% CDR.

Again it all comes down to circumstances. Did Nasus die? Has he been farming vhampions? or was he farming farm? Was riven 3-0-0 and proceeds to be 420-4-20?

And you are right he isn't OP but he is definitely frustrating to play against.

TL;DR for nasus's kit: He has so much utility jammed into his kit that he can be tanky at the same time and deal enough damage. the drawback is not getting CCed.

TL;DR for whole reply: Riven will always be hard to deal with. So is Nasus late game. Circumstances can destroy their strength though. It depends on who would you take instead of someone else. Big reply and i might've went of topic. thats what i feel

TDubH2 votes

Perfect immobilization of nasus unnecessary but beneficial.... then again if you have malz on your team Nasus is fked... (tank buster... against a tank?) and nasus has a problem with being kited DESPITE wither, which he can only really level up after 9 depending on which he puts points into... but he is difficult to lane against i will give you that but so is riven, and because nasus only really scales into the late game, and trades MOBILITY for UTILITY, is susceptible to ganks, unlike riven who has a mixture of UTILITY and MOBILITY which is difficult to gank and she does well early because she often maxes one of her UTILITY/DMG skills first.

No, its not. I fail to see why people keep claiming that mechanical skill is a thing in MOBAs. Mechanical skill is not the goal in MOBAs, but time management and stat building, nothing more. Sure, you got some champs that have a trick they can pull, but its not like they have more than 1 most of the time. Pretty much every combo champ has exactly one combo to use.

That said, if you have bigger and better stats, you very much do insta-win.
