What champion whose theme you love can't you play due to kit wonkiness or insane skill ceiling?

For me it has to be AurelionSol Aurelion Sol. When this champion came out I was beyond hyped and his lore, VO, and abilities on paper all made me super excited. A roaming constant damage mage who builds a little tanky and shreds with positioning? Hell yes. I played a ton of him, got him to level 4 in the matter of a few weeks and was going for the coveted level 7 when the nerfs started to strike. Let's face it, Aurelion was super OP on release. Right now I'd say he is underpowered but has a small subsection of mains who are so insane with him that he can't be buffed for the common man, and why would those people want him to get "power neutral changes," just look at what happened to Kindred, Taliyah, and Poppy. Sure, they have better winrates at the bottom but now they're useless in high level play (with the exception of jungle Taliyah... which Riot will probably stop if it's too extreme.)

Aurelion's character and kit is just so cool to me but his balance feels so unsatisfying. Constant damage based on your positioning sounds badass except early game you do about 3 damage and are still mana gated like hell, then late game your minimal damage is upgraded to a pretty alright shred except you'll die instantly in the lawnmower instagib teamfight deathball meta.

Some other characters for me include Mordekaiser (whose old kit I loved but the season 5 rework isn't as fun to me), Kalista RekSai Taliyah Singed

TahmKench half of his skill ceiling is explaining to your teammates how your kit works and getting them to not jump out of your belly.

Real talk, there's nothing more annoying than playing Tahm with your premade friends and they hit you with the "why'd you spit me out man" on discord and you're just like "dude you're an idiot." And after you explain it to them it doesn't happen again lol.

Yorick He just feels so awkward and strange in how he scales and itemises. Every build feels like you're really improvising to make him do things that other champions do with less hassle. Hell, even Urgot's itemisation feels better and he's cut off from half the items he wants since he's ranged.

Triforce is basically the perfect first item for Yorick. After that Zzrot or steraks are again perfect for him. After that you can build tank because you already have enough damage to destroy most people. Yoricks scaling is insane, you just have to get through those first few levels and then you basically win if you can hit your E's.

You mean skill floor, not ceiling.

No, I mean ceiling. On Aurelion for example I'm decent at, but I'm a flex player with no real main so I don't invest a massive amount of time into any particular character. I can competently play him if my team is already winning and do some cool plays from time to time, but if you watch a really high level Aurelion player who has reached the ceiling go apeshit with him you'll realize how big the gap between the floor and the ceiling is.

And the game is balanced for the ceiling a lot of the time, unfortunately. The mage class in particular has had several champions get nuked because of pro play. It could be argued that they are so hard that getting okay at them (skill floor) takes longer and I agree on that front, but the champions being balanced around the most insane players leads to them getting nerfed, which is what I mean in the title.

I don't get what you're arguing then. Why would you "not be able to play" a champion because of their skill ceiling? A high skill ceiling by definition doesn't prevent a less skilled player from using a champion - that's what a high skill floor does. Draven and Katarina have a high skill floor. You usually can't just play your first game on one of those champions at your current elo and be successful. If you think Aurelion Sol is a similar case then, again you're arguing for a high skill floor, not ceiling.

No because what I'm saying is even if you pick up Katarina and you can play her adequately enough to not just be a feeder (IE, being at the skill floor) she has such a high skill cap with how many resets, interactions, strategies, and split second reactions you can do that make the difference between an ace and dying instantly, losing the game. Because a very very small percentage of players can pull off said tricks, she has been nerfed so they don't have a 100% winrate on her, therefore if you are at the skill floor the champion will be nearly useless until you put hundreds of hours onto her. That's what the post is about, it's about wanting to get into a character like Aurelion but not wanting to lose for hundreds and hundreds of games just to start getting a grasp. Skill floor is where you start, skill ceiling is where you need to be.

That's skill floor lol. When Riot nerfs a champion based on their maximum potential they're raising the champion's skill floor. Also nice downvotes. "I will downvote people that don't agree with me! REE!" :)

Riven without her Dawnbringer skin. After playing with it on the PBE for so long, everything else feels clunky and impossible to combo with.

Skarner

Skarner might actually have been my most favourite character in the game, if it wasn't for the fact that his kit is very basic and outdated and his itemization is really all over the place.

Other than that, probably Shen

Shen is another one I agree with you on. I like the concept and I like what my teammates can do with him, but every time I play him I just get the feeling that I'm useless no matter what I try. On paper his kit is sick and I like his lore but damn he's hard to get into.

New Aatrox. Just feels underwhelming.
