You're not supposed to live against assassins if you're a priority target without outplaying them. Buying Sterak's isn't outplaying them but it lets you survive with no play involved unlike Zhonya's or QSS.

Riot wants priority targets to die to assassins in a fair way. Otherwise assassins would be underpowered and that would not be okay.

You know what's not fair, though? When that 0/5/0 Kha'zix can just walk up to your ADC under tower and kill him because he just got level 11. It makes sense that the assassin can kill squishies instantly when they're ahead or even. It just feels bad when they can do it from ridiculously behind. "Oh, even though you completely beat me in every sense of the word, I get to win just by picking this champion."

But not if you buy Steraks. Then that 0/5/0 Kha'zix is never going to 1v1 you. He will actually need to use teamwork to catch up.

You don't understand the mechanic behind assassins. It's not about being ahead or being even being a requirement to kill priority targets. They have to have the capacity to kill priority targets completely regardless of how far ahead or behind they are. The more ahead they are, the more dangerous they would be to classes that they aren't meant to counter, which is exactly how every other class in the game works.

It's not about being ahead or being even.

Then you obviously need to play a different game because this is how every class in this game works. Not just assassins.

Assassins have to rely on their team to facetank crowd control and isolate priority targets even when they ARE fed.

Assassins are as team reliant as marksmen, if not even more so in higher tiers of play.

You're not helping your case here whatsoever.
