Has the game become too fast?

Disclaimer: This thread is not about champions being overpowered or about need to nerf any of them in any way, it is about the general pace of the game. Any champions mentioned can be replaced with any other.

Well. Has it?

I think I have been playing before seasons were introduced and I seem to recall a slower pace of play. I don't remember champions running around with 500+ movement speed, not even with Mobility boots, nor do I recall getting killed in 0.5 secs by any single champion.

Just yesterday, I had a game with an enemy Nasus. He had a Dead man's plate on him, and a Trinity. He was impossible to catch, with his ms jumping around from 450 to 550. If we engaged and we didn't waste all ults on him (4v1) he just ran away laughing, no problem.

And what about these giant amounts of damage? What about that Rengar that jumps in, and kills you no matter what you do? Only LeBlanc was capable of this, back in the day. Or that Yi that cuts through your team in seconds. Or that Yasuo. Or that Diana.

In my oppinon, the game has become more about anticipating your enemies moves instead of directly countering them, when they happen, simply because it's too late if you interrupt mid move. Take Katarina for instance. Let's say you play Taric. She ults, you interrupt, all good, right? Well no. By the time it takes you to realize that Kat is using her ult, and by the time you get in range, cast your spell, and it hits her, it's way too late, your team is dead. You gotta basically guess when she is gonna jump in and cast your things before hand. If you guessed wrong, well, too bad.

Basically I think in the years past, damage in general has increased, thus forcing other stats to increase as well. And these stats weren't the defenseive ones, but rather the ones that you can avoid damage with (eg.: movespeed or champions being introduced with dashes/gap closers/semi flashes). From where this damage is coming from? Well, mostly from items. All damage stats have increased. AD items granting more AD than before, AP items more AP, and then there are items like Devourer and friends.

I think this leads to greater and greater gaps opening up between champions, especially older ones vs. new ones. It's no wonder we are seeing the same 20-25 champions over and over again in Ranked games (mostly). Also it leads to it being a "reactions" game over tactics. Which iI'm not saying it's bad, but I have my doubts.

Or maybe I'm just too old.

Edit for clarity: I do not mean average game time by "fast" (I thought that is pretty clear if you read the post).

To me the speed of the game is in an odd spot. There's less snowballing, so games last longer, however it's harder to pull back against the enemy when they are starting a snowball, which makes the time of the game that decides the rest of the match earlier.

I don't know if this is the case, and I definitely don't know how it would be fixed, however this is how it feels to me.

YES! It has. Everything is too fast... They want the flashy cool plays for the pro-play. Turrets are so weak that if you die once in lane, or kill once, you'll either almost kill or kill the turret if you have a minion wave and have any turret kill potential what so ever... Even tanks can burst carries down instantly as apposed to you know... CC and be like tanks in any other game ever made. Its kind of ridiculous and has started to degrade the game.... The skill gap between pro's and casuals is like a damn inch in comparison to other games played on a pro circuit.

The thing is that games are even more of a one-sided stomp now.

You get item 3931 and the game is over.

Kindred is still super powerful and needs a bit of number/kit tuning.

Lux deserves to die in a fire kek

I haven't seen Yasuo in a while, thank god

Chogath needs sustain nerfs, and to need to build damage to three-shot instead of just a RoA.

Darius Garen Fiora Gangplank are all permaban.

Skarner and Mordekaiser replace them if they aren't banned.

Nasus and Veigar are probably the makers of the longest games, but the most one-sided if they get just a minute to farm.

MonkeyKing is obnoxious. 500 AOE damage knockup ult at level 6 please.

TahmKench is hungry.

Annie is also hungry. For your soul.

Same with Thresh.

Blitzcrank legit could 1v2 bot lane and win 80% of matchups.

Ashe shouldn't be able to permaslow for free AND get crits because of it.

Viktor has too much burst for having just a item 3198

Vladimir has too much sustain with just an item 1052

Fiddlesticks is toxic in general.

Yes, I love calling things overloaded because they are.

Edit: Fuck this bitch and her pushing power Tristana

Well, people were saying the game is too slow at the beggining of the season. But one thing that has escalated beyond any reasonable measure is damage, across the board. Supports have more gold = more damage, newly released champions all get % health, items like blade of the are you kidding me and the penetration items, everything contributes to damage being obnoxiously high. You could cut damage on everything by 15% and the game would be much better for it. Currently, tanks deal the damage more appropriate for bruisers, supports are secondary mages, ad carries are ranged assassins, and assassins are walking delete buttons.

Also, there is more cheese than at any other time, with Tahm, Fiora true damage and Darius heals, homeguard, double TP. These all look more like bugs in need of fixing rather than something anyone would put in the game intentionally.

Yi and rammus were both aorund befor seasons, beeing still about the fastes champs, WW and his W did speed with 500mph in your face, Nunus W allowed his carrys to be the flash...PD gave 15% ms and stacked, trinity gave 12%ms, tanks had FoN, so ms from items was rather high, though Deadman's is certainly a point, up to 60 ms is way more than the 8% from FoN

Ryze did delete entire teams in less than a sec, Annie was as bursty as ever, Yi and jax could kill a squishy in a splitsecond, veigar could kill any manastacking mage with one R, my anivia regulary oneshot squishys with q+e, Pant could kill an entire team with one fullchannled heartseaker, sion could burst people in a splitsecond if they facechecked him...

so the onlything that really changed is mobillity via dashes and co, combined with burst, though kassadin did already exist with a bigger burst than he ever had, so did Ap-YI... so actually, no, little to nothing has changed here.

What has changed is gold and xp flow, the average gametimne is certainly lower than befor S1 and people reach lvl 18 and full gear faster, so in that sense, the game has become faster, though that might also be because back then, hardly any meta existed, players had poor macroplay and little strategy, so less coordinated gangbang vs guys that are out off potition, less coordinated steamroles once you had an advantage and thus longer games as people didn't know how to properly finish a game.

There needs to be more champions that are anti-offensive so to speak (AKA Anti-Pushers).

Well LoL has been flying towards twitch shooters in the speed of light for a while now.

Just played a 50 minute match.

Um, not everyone has 40+ minutes for games.

Eastrid10/27/2015, 7:26:44 AM1 votes

The sad thing is it's true, but the game times last so much longer now I remember playing games for about 18 to 25 mins a game now unless people FF at 20 most games like 30 to 40 mins. Then again there are a lot more items now then when this game first came out.

His Goatliness10/28/2015, 12:26:12 AM1 votes

Long games are fun if it's close. Short games are fun if you win. I have probably equal parts 20min ff and 45+ minute games. Just depends on the match. I don't care for the 15 minutes of lane phase though. It's boring.

You are what i call someone who hasnt played the game for very long. In season 2-3-4 the games have only progressively gotten over with slower with a higher chance of losing to a single teamfight or a single play. Before the games were 20-28 min tops where the team doing good would win instead of 40 min long games that are average now where you win off of a baron throw ect.

Lost In Time10/27/2015, 7:46:35 AM1 votes

Definitely something I've noticed.

It could've been because we had less champions, like Annie was THE premier nuker and no other mage had that kind of 100-0 power Annie did, but with AP items being even strong and resistances being worse, I watched my Lissandra destroy Caitlyn 100-0 while sporting even less ratios and base damage than Annie.

Like Shaco would've been Season 1 Rengar, but while he stealthed and killed you, it was still a more long drawn out death. Rengar pops you before you can even attempt to ping him.

I think it may have been caused by mobility being prevalent because if you can't kill your target fast enough (read: before they can react), they'll just blink, hop, and dash away while you blew your only gap closer to attempt to kill them.

it's not the game that's become too fast. it's the way the majority of idiots are playing it. play early-mid game champs, smash your face on the keyboard ignoring overextending and then surrendering at 20 after you've fed 5-10 kills and blamed your jung and other lanes for not helping/teleporting/roaming/keeping opponent in lane. people who surrender and force surrenders should lose more lp! many of us want to play late-game scaling champs and give so many ignored warning pings to overextending overaggressive team mates.
