Can someone explain to me why autofill is so much worse...

than what we had beforehand?

Games (unlike what apparently a lot of anti-autofill players seem to think) have become MORE competitive. At least now you can chose the 2 roles you want to play with a CHANCE to get autofilled. If you were unlucky in season 4 you could have gotten last pick 10 games in a row which used to be the SUPPORT position. That's impossible right now.

You had a whole season where people were guaranteed 2 roles and were told that this would be the system going forward. People changed their champion pool and became more specialized. Now suddenly you're backtracking and undoing all of that.

I get that it's necessary but only a fool would assume that it's not going to cause some major problems. Also personally, I was supporting less back in season 4 than I am now with this auto-fill implementation.

Roles were distributed more evenly,

now if you get autofilled in a role you have maybe 10 games in, you will most likely face a main that has 100s of games in that role, more so than previously

Lauchmelder1 votes

Could happen in previous seasons as well. I had people with 5 support games go against me with somewhere in the hundreds.

venomous frost2 votes

But previously you had way more games in every role

That shouldn't matter. You don't need to play support like god tier, You just need to be able to play it enough to get by.

I don't play support like ever, but when I have to, I just pick like karma, or nami. Both simple champs that offer a lot to a team.

Thank you. That's the point I'm trying to make. I have at least two picks for every single offrole of mine that I can fall back to in case I need it. It's not so hard to learn a champion in another position.

And it's not like I'm gonna feed just because it's my offrole. People just need to get out of their "it's my lane so I'm gonna go aggro" mentality when they got autofilled.

You are playing in bronze.

Come back when you get autofilled toplane vs a diamond trynd main with 1000 trynd games. He will dive you 10 times over

it's not hard to learn a champ, it is hard to compete with champion mains

Read the first line, disregarded your entire post. Not worth reading it.

Autofill is worse than the queue system from last season for the following reasons:

  1. Despite, supposedly, improving queue times it does not feel that it has done so. It feels like there are more dodges than ever before, which actually increases the time it takes to get into a game.

  2. It often seems to fail at assembling a team. I have seen, at least a few times now, players who queue Support/Fill get a non-support position, such as top, whilst a top lane main gets autofilled to support. This often results in some very confusing three or four way position swapping.

  3. It should not be required to play all roles. Obviously, that is a good idea for improving game knowledge and general skill, and, obviously, everyone is probably somewhat proficient at any role. However, there is no reason that it should be required. This makes life far more complicated for one trick ponies, or those who do not own very many champions yet.

  4. Unless I am mistaken, autofill does not prioritize the same number of autofilled players on each team, nor does it match teams for autofilled positions. It is no surprise that someone who gets autofilled top does poorly when put up against a top lane main.

  5. Building from the last couple of points: To make matters worse, the frequency of autofill occurring to any individual player is rare. Whilst this means that you typically get your primary or secondary roles, and thus the matches that you are autofilled in have a virtually negligible effect upon your MMR / Ranking, this also means that you get far less serious practice at the role. You can only learn so much from normals as playing against opponents who specialize in the champions and positions they are playing and are serious about climbing is a far different game. In other words: You're pretty much guaranteed to do awful when you do get autofilled.

I don't think anyone seriously thinks autofill is a downgrade from the system that was in place before the Dynamic Queue style was adapted.

It's better than other seasons, but not better than what we had last season.

Hyperiön1 votes

You mean Cancer Q? Please, that was the worse season to date.

Dynikus1 votes

You're confusing dynamic queue with role preference. Choosing your best two roles and being guaranteed one of them had literally nothing to do with dynamic queue.

Hyperiön1 votes

No, I am putting them together. Ranked is supposed to show your true skill, across all aspects of the game. Not just what you can do in one lane.

If you watch Bjergsen, or QTpie, or NB3. They all have their main roles, yes. but they are easily able to flex to other lanes.

last season spoiled the community. Thinking they are entitled to those tow lanes only. If you want to climb to masters/diamond. You better well get good at other lanes other than you two, because you will get autofilled a hell of a lot more than in low tiers.

Everyone hands mid to Bjergsen though.

It was just an example. I have already seen him go jungle and still carry games.

Basically, people have stopped practicing their off-roles since most of S6 didn't have autofill.

As such, they don't expect to have to play it and are out-of-practice doing so.

Honestly, I've played ADC perhaps four times since S5 ended and I'm not going to play the role in ranked even if I'm autofilled into it. Doing so would just be sabotaging our team.

If the system would stop autofilling me into ADC when I've queued for Support/Top or Support/Jungle, that would be fantastic.

Lauchmelder1 votes

That's the ignorance that makes autofill so toxic for so much people. And that has nothing to do with practice, that's all about game knowledge.

People not practicing their off roles and then "sabotaging" their team is just a sad excuse to not play what they're given. I'm fine with that, those players can dodge. But QQing on the boards about it is taking it a bit too far.

EndlessSorcerer2 votes

Practice matters.

Quite frankly, I rarely play ADC and dislike the role. If I am matched against another Platinum player (or a Diamond player) who mains the role, I am going to be completely and utterly crushed and outperformed.

If I actually want to climb, I'm better off just dodging any games I'm autofilled into ADC rather than play it out since it lets me preserve my MMR and minimizes my LP loss.

Lauchmelder1 votes

Yes, like I said. Dodging or not is up to the players who don't want to play that role.

It doesn't mean that autofill is a failure though, it just means some people simply refuse to play certain roles. It's their decision.

lilpokfluf2 votes

People just like to whine, getting autofilled support is no different than when we used to force last pick to support almost EVERY game. It's the same thing the only thing this serves is to weed out the ragers who would sabotage themselves into a loss just because they got filled support.

Nameless Voice2 votes

I don't mind being autofilled, but I do mind the issues caused by other people being autofilled.

It was pretty bad for a while with constant dodges, but that seems to have lessened a lot now. There was also a fair bit of toxicity caused by people being autofilled, but again, I'm seeing much less of that these days.

E GIRL SNIPER2 votes

Because season 4 was years ago and the game is supposed to get better?

Autofill doesn't benefit anyone below diamond at all and just ruins games. It was a terrible idea and should only apply to diamond and up like when they first made it.

WoonStruck1 votes

Because its the same thing but queue times are still longer.

Also, there's very little decency/respect when it comes to autofill, unlike requesting a role in the past.

Also, what Kaioko said is extremely relevant.
