Champion Mastery vs. Ranked

So I win a 0-1-3 (carried) game with Graves and gain around 1100 mastery points while going 3-0-16 (carrying) with Maokai and winning while gaining only around 1200 points.

I thought Champion Mastery was supposed to be a measure of champion skill and not so much as to actually winning the game, hence champion mastery. Ranked focuses more on game mastery rather than champion, so what the hell is the difference if most of my points come from winning the game and not doing well/decent with the champion I'm playing?

The same thing with Xerath where I go 8-10-7 (could have done better) and lose while gaining a measly 150 points.

My question is.. why are so many people interested in this champion mastery thing? How is this any more valuable than searching ur kda win % cs etc a game on lolking?

Because Champion Mastery is official. Riot recognizes it as a separate way of determining skill, which is why so many players judge each other based on how well they do in Ranked. For those who fail to do well in Ranked, Champion Mastery is another way for them to be recognized as good players.
