Bans are not being used for their intended purpose.

Riot introduced bans as an additional strategic element to the game, allowing your team to ban champions that counter your strategies or team composition (not that strategy is really in this game anymore).

I literally never ban counters. Noone ban counters. Do you know what people ban? The same like...12 champions...every game. Yi, Kai'sa, Zed. Just whatevers strong.

Is there any way to fix this?

Bans are usually used on champions that no one wants to deal with.

Or Yasuo even when he has a 44% winrate because he makes people salty.

RISE Shlack1231 votes

That's because winrate isn't the only indicator of balance state. Yasuo is one of those champs that, in the right hands, is downright impossible to beat. He's one of those champs that relies on the skill of the person playing him, and that's why his winrate isn't the determining factor in his balance. Plenty of plebs can play Yasuo and tank his winrate, but that means absolutely nothing when you're facing a Yasuo god in lane.

LOL that's a crock of shit.

I mean, even people like Trinimortal and other pros say this. So you can disagree with the sentiment all you want, but people way better than you at the game say it all the time. So yeah...you do you.

Trinimmortal is platinum and basically cannot play anything else well. His "Beat League" series showed him seriously struggling with champions like Annie and Twitch. Secondly, Yasuo is the single most mained champion in the game. Mains make up a larger portion of his winrate stats than any other high playrate champion in the game, and unless he is overpowered even people with high numbers of games played don't perform particularly out of line compared to other high-skillcap champions statistically speaking.

Finally, if Yasuo was "impossible to beat" in the right hands, then those hands clearly don't exist because you'd see tons of Yasuo one-tricks near the top of the challenger ladder in every major region.

You can ban Kai'Sa, Yi, etc. and play safely if you get counter picked...

Or you can ban your counter and let those OP champs 1v5 your team on a 2 item spike. Your call.

The new 5-ban system was meant for every player to have a choice, you could pick one champion you as a single player did not want in the game. You can use that however you please:

  • You can ban a champion that is strong
  • You can ban a champion that counters you or your team
  • You can ban a champion that you hate and don't like playing against (Shaco)
  • You can ban a new champion because you don't want your team or the enemy team having something that you don't know about

All of these are 'intended' uses of a ban.

SanKakU5 votes

There are actually two problems with banning counters instead of the strongest champs that your team doesn't want to play. Not only are you allowing the strongest champs to get picked by the enemy, but you're also telling the opponents what kind of champs counter what you're intending to pick. However, you can use the reverse to your advantage. Ban something that doesn't counter your intended picks and watch as the opponents guess wrong what you're picking. Of course, worst case scenario is you have to play against the strongest champs instead as they call your bluff.

Edge of Daybreak4 votes

The only way to fix it is to either change who the strongest or invent a game with no meta. Otherwise people are always going to do this. The overwhelming majority of us will never even be good enough to understand counters but we can all understand fuck X champion.

Maaaaybe it's about their game being totally unbalanced, so legit strategies don't work anymore, bans (intended as counters) included?

Marothennan3 votes

There is a way to fix that... BALANCE THE GAME

...but Riot doesn't show any interest in doing that

Breezey Boy3 votes

I originally banned Blitzcrank every game, and for good reason, aside from actually being a counter to me, I play mostly squishy supports, his whole kit is busted and just disgusting. However, as the game went on, I started banning Brand, and now Fiddlestick, not because they counter me, but because they're fucking busted. The real issue is with Riot's balancing. Ghostcrawler killed WoW and now he's going to League, to.

Not really. Every champ is viable, so whatever is played commonly and people think is good people will ban. Target strategic bans are usually tournament level bans.

Started since season 4 and bans have always been how they are now in soloq. Strategic bans is usually an LCS things but soloq is not cordinated at all most of the time.

I ban based on personal matchups. For example, when I play soraka, I'm 0-7 when jinx is on the other team so jinx gets banned.

yes.

staggered ban 3 pick 3 ban 2 pick 2 bans. reveal of opponent picked champions.

I am maining Malzahar at the moment, I usually ban Zed, not because I can't deal with him, but because I don't trust my bot lane to handle his roam.

  • Get 1v5 stomped by a 0-skill yi, kai'sa, etc
  • Be forced into a losing matchup because you were counterpicked

You may pick one.

You could just go into the losing matchup because it literally means next to nothing unless you're both exactly evenly matched at all stages of the game.

The reason why bans aren't working as intended is because they're no longer being used in the environment they were intended for.

If you'll recall, the ban system used to be the team captain's choice, and then was shifted to be sequential, where each player would pick their champion, and then ban another. This was shortly before drafts and 10ban were implemented.

Everyone banning at the beginning of the game, instead of pick by pick, gives less agency to the players involved, because they're forced to guess at what their opponents are setting up for.

Automated Riven1 votes

That's because the game isn't balanced around strategies. The game is balanced around one strategy, and that is deathball mid>get baron>win game.

If champions had legit niches in different team compositions, you would see more banning of champion counters rather then general op champions. Because there would be no champion that will fit into every team comp.

Its not whatever's strong its annoying champs. I ban morg and brand because its hard to gank braand and he is strong. Morg has to much cc plus black shield.

I ban counters..... I kinda have to with this champ. Gotta beware those really stong counter junglers.

My bans often fall under what I have no desire to face. For example, if I'm playing Nami, I almost always ban Yasuo. I hate having my ult blocked by that stupid wall... especially late game when he can pretty much spam it at will.

Snowdrift1 votes

My biggest gripe with the ban system is still how many double bans occur and a lot of op champions still get through. On average each game usually has 4-6 unique bans. Both teams typically ban things like zed/brand/kaisa/yi. I wish they did the ban system like in lcs even if it did lengthen champ select by a few seconds; maybe I’d actually have a chance to ban a counter.

Rins Thigh Socks1 votes

Bans are used in competitive to get rid of team compositions or champions that are really scary to play against.

But in solo queue people don't coordinate enough for team comps so you ban whatever is OP or counters your lane. Usually what's OP and if you ban a B tier champ that counterpicks you, you're looked down on as kinda selfish. That's how bans have been used in solo queue since the dawn of time.

DearPear1 votes

Permabanning wukong because I've yet to win against a wukong recently. Does it count as strategic?

RISE Shlack1231 votes

I mean even LCS and such ban Kai'Sa simply because she's over-tuned. When the pros are using bans to ban out overpowered champs rather than banning counters, it isn't bans being used incorrectly. It's the game being poorly balanced as a whole.

Hügö1 votes

Jokes on you. I use my ban to ban counters. "Ah Yi again so fucking op he counters my team? Better ban him"

Subject 51 votes

MasterYi If a DPS can do 5K Damage in under 2 seconds time, I don't want any part of it. I really don't care if I'm playing Lulu or Zilean that can shut down Yi. Seriously fuck that guy.
