Why can't solo queue just be for solo queuers?

Drugoth··69 votes·4,305 views

#edit: I didnt realize my post would be so controversial or garner this much attention. Thank you to everyone who posted/upvoted. I remain hopeful that the 2016 season will bring nothing but positive changes.# What possible benefit is there to allowing people to go in groups if 3,4,5 in a solo queue environment. If you want to play ranked with a group of your friends then you can just make a ranked team.

I just want to know how riot thinks this is a good idea at all it's going to heavily unbalance ranked solo queue and make it harder for people who queue for ranked alone.

Not even counting the possible toxicity that can crop up we're talking entitlement. It's already bad enough that we have duo queuers who think just because they're duo they can have whatever roles they want regardless of the pick order (which is heavily enforced by the solo queue community)

TL;DR please can someone explain to me the benefit of putting premade parties into solo queue? When those parties of players can just go play normal instead or create a ranked team? There is already multiple avenues for people to play with friends, why ruin a good thing in solo queue?

I think they just really want to do away with the "lonely que" concept of the game by making it more team oriented by playing with friends. I still dont agree with the concept of Dynamic but I'm 90% certain they are going to add the system with little to no adjustments.

Drugoth6 votes

If they're so hell bent on adding this to the game can they not also make a "true solo queue"? Like i said theres already multiple avenues for friends to play together. Norms, ranked 3v3 teams ranked 5v5 teams, not to mention we already have the obnoxious duo queuers.

Guarantee you if they make a "True Solo Queue", every other queue will be drained/empty because no one would ever willingly choose to solo queue in a team queue queue instead of a True Solo Queue. It's literally choosing to play at a disadvantage vs. not playing at a disadvantage.

Drugoth3 votes

Then do you see the inherent issue in this proposed dynamic grouping? I certainly already don't appreciate duo queuers coming into a solo queue lobby and calling their roles and feeling entitled to get them JUST because they're duo. Increasing the size of these groups will just make it worse for the solo guys when it comes to role entitlement and voting power. A 4 man premade already comes with the power to end a game at 20 minutes if they want to. Multiply that by two for every game that 4 mans go into since they have to be matched against another similar 4 man.

Of course, I am 100% against this dynamic queue. If anything they should remove duo queue from solo queue, not add trio queue, quad queue and even full pre mades. This is a horrible decision that might even get me to drop League of Legends after playing since Season 1.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the duo queuers, i've been quiet about them for so long because i figured anything i said wouldnt effect change because it would get downvoted to oblivion because duo queueing had been around forever.

It's a sort of complex(not really,it just looks that way) situation.

Optimally you'll have just ranked solo q,ranked 5v5,and normals, but since ranked teams means a specific team,it's very hard to gather 5 people from that team, not to mention you have to go through the tedious process of fully(you're not placed into the right spot after 5 games, far from it) calibrating, and that option is just unfitting for most. So you still have normals, issue is A LOT of people are just hell bent on ranked, and are very reluctant to play anything else, but at the same time enjoy it less due to the rather lonely environment(so basically their attitude is ruining the game for themselves),but as I've said, they are hell bent on ranked,so they are adding this option mostly for them(to take that(perceived self-harming) option away from them).

And as far as how many people are in this group,I'd actually say most of the playerbase,I also feel like riot won't fully admit their reasoning on this matter either, this is basically why they are doing this.

Oh and also I suspect solo's will be matched with teams with lower mmr(I think it's already is that way with duos),though that should cause some problems with greater variances in performance.

Well, its a fair idea but we already have it in Team Ranked. Sure it can be hard to get all 5 players ready but, still.

let me just copy and past a post i made somewhere else.

I don't really understand it though, I mean, they had a ranked 5v5 queue. If people want to play as a 5 man team they can just use that I. I'm not a huge fan of solo queue stats and team stats going together, doesn't make much sense to me.

Playing as an organized team is a way different environment then straight solo queue.

That's the whole reason they're changing it. the solo que environment heavily favors individual mechanical skill and twitch reflexes over teamwork and coordination. pretty much the only reliable way to rank up is to main mid/top/jungle get lots of kills during laning phase and become a one man carry. These "one man" carries can only be defeated by a large mistake or coordinated effort by the opposing team which is unlikely to happen when that team is working at cross purposes.

The dynamic que, introduces more coordination between ranked games so they can shut down these run away carries. the teambuilder and new draft pick allows more time for cooperation and strategic discussion. The coming clubs, social media, and removal of the 2 person limit make finding good ranked partners easier and more worthwhile.

This is about about design goals. they want to make league a Team game, where the most important skills are willingness to listen, cooperation, and strategic thinking. not a game where two five man teams struggle with each other and their teammates and the team that wins in the end only won because they had a few mechanically better players.

There are plenty of games where success is solely due to individual skil. Riot wants to make a game where success is mainly due to a person's ability to work with a team.

Drugoth1 votes

I just read the entire surrender @20 post and am a bit more optimistic but the pessimist in me is still worried about 4 man premades abusing their numbers advantage against their teammates :X

Unlucky Number72 votes

i believe that will only happen rarely. more often you will get match with a 4 man premade that have good synergy with each other and they will carry you up. otherwise why would they be in a premade.

If they turn toxic just report them an move on. they'll get punished if they crossed a line. if all else fails theres the mute button.

trolls will always be trolls. you can't prevent them from trolling for the same reason why you can't keep squirrels out of bird feeders. but it doesn't mean you should stop trying.

Truth:

Because SoloQ'rs cry the most publicly about the situation. Infact, SoloQrs just cry the most.

Maybe you won't tilt so hard, and publicly denounce league after every lost placement match, when it occurs to you, you can be responsible for 80% of your team, instead of 'only losing because shitty trash teammates'.

A good number of people say they can't constantly duo or find a team. This is again their own fault. I know 5 people IRL I play League with, it's a team game.

This doesn't stop me from duoing when they are all 5 offline. I can still invite Online friends, and Online groups is more realistic with 4 members.

Drugoth9 votes

The one thing i am the most worried about is the voting power of a 4 man premade. Just imagine poor little old me in my promo series and this premade 4 that i happened to get matched with are pretty sour since they're sitting at 0LP for whatever reason. ANYONE can find out if you're in a series nowadays if they just lolnexus the game. They could choose to be super toxic and 4/5 surrender vote just because they can.

Even if that team is not a bunch of toxic players they could see a slight early lead for the enemy team and decide to give up all hope on that game for the chance at a new one right away.

This is a real problem that WILL occur if Riot continues down this path.

Also calling solo queuers a bunch of whiners is a very broad generalisation and not constructive to the issue at hand.

how is it a broad generalization? you literally just whined about being outnumbered in your promos. Invite 2 people if you're worried about the vote. If you literally don't have 2 friends, spam blind match and add everyone until you do.

I dont duo queue in the first place because i have in the past and it really screws with the matchmaking too much in the first place. In true games full of randoms the matchmaking is more accurate. When you start introducing parties of players into the mix the match making service has to compensate for their differences in MMR and you get some weird matches.

And spamming invites is about the most irritating thing that ticks me off. I just want to be matched with 9 other players as close to my MMR as possible. Is that too much to ask?

Also you can't just start your post off claiming your opinion is truth. That just erases all credibility you might have had to begin with. AND the only reason it seems that solo queuers are the most publicly against it is BECAUSE we are the group of players that would be most negatively effected by this change!

Yes that is too much to ask. It just means you're close to the rank you should be, and shouldn't care so much.

I'm Bronze 3, but my MMR has hit 1500 in Victory's.

When I play Rank, it matches me against a full team of Silver 3+, everytime. Even my own team is Silver, and normally sad to see me.

So there you go. It can adjust the match all the way to an individual level, and just because you're not witnessing it, doesn't mean that it can't overcompensate for a single player. It does this if you have a group or not.

Drugoth4 votes

The list of possible balanced matchups is sharply reduced the more people you add to your party because it now has to not only find another group of 4 players and 1 random but they ALSO need to be close in MMR and it's just not feasible for the matchmaking services to get proper matchups every time.

Say thay we're crybabies all you want the only reason the solo queue community is up in arms is because they are heavily opposed to the impending changes. You want us all to sit back and say nothing while riot removes our only meaningful way to queue when our friends arent online and have a friendly balanced matchup? Just because we dont have friends they should implement this dynamic grouping mechanic because all the popular kids with friends want to play together in ranked? As i already stated there are already several options available for those who have friends to play together, ranked or otherwise.

Why fix what isnt broken in the first place?

But every Ranked I've played this season, has been a SoloQ, where I am Bronze 3, and the Opponents are full teams of Silvers, and I am the lowest ranked person of every game I played.

Why is this?

Because the MMR adjustment is just as effective in SoloQ. I've hit 1500 MMR in normal's, and the system knows that me fighting 800's to get to "B2" would just be a slaughter.

If you're really crying about duo, because it matches you with harder people, look at my Solo Rank and say that to my face. I'm fighting people as high as 10 division higher, in standard Solo Q. If the system is matching you with 10 people the same rank, it's because you're probably around that rank yourself.

Drugoth3 votes

Okay cool, you're getting matched with people around the same skill level as you even though you're in bronze. That's cool and that is a reflection of the solo queue matchmaking working as intended. Bringing larger premades into the same matchmaking system will make it harder to find properly balanced matches. As it is there are already duo queuers in different leagues with vastly differing MMRs going into the matchmaking together. This means the client had to compensate for their difference by also finding players on the other team to roughly match the average. This barely works with duo queue, if not at all because the system has to match duos with other duos. This vastly decreases the amount of fair matchups. If you add in 3s 4s premades then it drastically reduces it even more giving you really unbalanced matchups.

How is this a good thing?

My whole point was it's not matching me with people around my skill level, solo or duo, or my rank, in any case. Are you fucking a moron?

1500 is around Gold 4, I was Bronze 3, and it matches me with Silver 4, which of those numbers looks correct to you?

It's apparent, it's obviously calculating team MMR per game. And this is fair/fine. Duo/single literally makes 0 difference because the system isn't merely putting two people the same rank together, because 1 person can be high rank and suck, and another can be low rank and not suck.

It's putting people together based on their MMR, which is how it standardly works, in SoloQ games already, so there is no difference.

But by my own example it's not wrong.

I'm the lowest Rank in every Rank I play, because my normal MMR spiked so hard.

Now I can't play easy rank games, because they are all higher MMR.

Meanwhile, my silver 4 enemies that may be in Qualifier matches, are about to lose to a Bronze 3 1500 MMR katarina.

So in a nutshell, SoloQ players are easily just as trolly, the system is designed to place two teams at even MMR. Nothing else. Having your own premade team won't stop a 1500 MMR player if you're Bronze 5. Can you verse a 1500 MMR player your very first rank game? Yes. Because they can easily be Bronze and still be 1500 level. The best part? It's harder to get them out of Bronze, because they have to beat Silver-Gold with Bronze Teammates in rank to progress out of it.

Just did a personal audit of your account. You've got a 44% win rate in bronze 2. The highest rank of anyone in your last 3 games was silver 5. Your mmr is around 1100 and if it was ever 1500 it was only for a game as with a win ratio like that in the 3rd lowest division in the game, there's no way you ever played against anyone anywhere near gold 5. You lied about eveything above and you're using the MMR on op.gg which has been wrong for years because it calculates Arams and norms into ranked mmr.

TLDR - x9 Lives blames riot for being bronze 2. He thinks he's better than he is and lied about playing against against golds which has never happened. His mmr is bad because his win rate is bad and it his mmr ever fell from 1500-1000 where it probably is around now it's because he got boosted or bought his account and fell from an elo he didn't deserve

If you click 'Solo Rank' in OP.gg it says 71% wintrate. There's only 7 games total, so looking at 3 makes you a lazy ass detective. The 3 you looked at, I literally played that day.

The trend I suggested of being the lowest rank of every match is correct. Just those 3, it was only by 3 ranks apart, less than normal. I also say 3 ranks, because I was promoted to Bronze 2 YESTERDAY, so clearly I'm not blaming Riot for being Bronze 2, because I was JUST bronze 3.

There have been players who have won 60 games straight. Some even 4v5s. If you're good enough to climb you will, and even f you were against golds all it would mean isn't that you have the same mmr as them and therefore are the Same skill which clearly you aren't since you play mostly silver 5s. So much wrong with this post.

Normal mmr does not affect your ranked mmr

Of course you can't play easy rank games it's supposed to match you with equally skilled players

Low silver is essentially bronze because of how badly the mmr/lp system work together

You aren't 1500 mmr, that would be mid-high gold and mid-high gold roflstomps low silver so hard it's not funny

Not to mention you'd get auto-promoted way before you got to 1500 mmr unless you do what I do and dodge

It's far harder for a 1500 mmr player to stay in bronze or silver than it is for them to get out of it

Premades mess with matchmaking itself, it has to take into account every person's varying mmr, and then it can knock individual's mmr way out of whack if they duo often with somebody more/less skilled than themselves, this will lead to many more unbalanced games

1500 is low gold. Not mid-high.

Low silver or not, why am I always the lowest rank, no matter how high I get? When I was Silver 1, I was facing Gold 1, is the point not to rank ABOVE other silver 1 players? Not face people 5 divisions higher? I've seen other peoples Rank games, they are almost all the same division.

I dodge a lot, idk how the 3 IP changes my MMR being too high to progress to my own rank.

If premades can knock MMR way out of wack, can you please describe the conditions? How do they differ from me entering a game alone? Basically my MMR is added to theirs are divided by 5 right? This would mean only a BETTER teammate would make the game harder. How can I invite a better teammate when I'm not allowed to Rank with Golds, but by the time I'm B1, I'll be fighting G5's?

That's my main issue.

Typically when you're bronze 1 you'll be playing against silver 4s-2s (ones who belong there, not ones who are getting close to climbing to gold) Same for the other tiers as well This is where the LP and the MMR system screw up, the LP system basically takes a while to catch up to your MMR because Riot designed it that way (and you have to play at above silver 4/5 level for them to say "ok you deserve to get out of bronze) The only way you would play against a gold 5 at that point is if the gold 5 is reaching the point of getting demoted (and it's really fucking hard to get demoted an entire tier)

Premades add a bit of mmr to the duo queue to make up for the fact they should have coordination with each other. Unfortunately most duo queues are going to have more or less coordination than whatever number Riot has come up with to balance them, leading to more variation in team skill levels. ALSO, the weaker player will have his mmr inflated and the stronger player will have his mmr deflated due to the results of the premade wins/losses as a whole... which leads to even more unbalanced matchmaking when they actually go play solo queue rather than queuing with their buddy.

most of your concerned are addressed here go to dynamic groups under follow up discussion in the table of contents.

tldr: you won't be unfairly punished if a 4 man premade report you so long as you don't do anything offensive and you can report them back.

But what about the case of 4 mans surrendering and costing you a series instead of actually trying to win?

It's rare that i encounter one person willing to spend 25+ minutes of their life and lose LP just to make sure you don't win your promos. What are the odds that you'll encounter a team that's willing to spend the same amount of time just to get you too lose. In fact i actually prefer having 4 people on my team who are trying to lose rather then just 1. the game will end much sooner and short games lose less LP. The only time this could be annoying is during a promo series and guess what. they fixed that.

If you failed a series and manage to make it back to the series you start out with 1 win.

You can't make a system bases solely around the worst case scenario. by that logic you should never leave your house in fear of 4 drivers who are willing to total their cars just to kill you. This is the same philosophy of why they added tahm, bard and kalista's kit into the game even though they all have trolling potential. Riot won't let the possibility that a champ may be used to troll others from introducing something that benefits their players as a whole. The fact that the large majority of the playerbase don't abuse these kits speaks volumes about the actual maturity of the playerbase. Trolls are highly visible, but they are not the majority.

Also wouldn't help when all for of them decide to report you for laughs or because you would play who they told you.

I cant play lee sin no matter how op he is when I don't own him.

I think Riot took the name SoloQ too literal so made it that you're alone against everyone, only explanation.

Exactly. Solo queue is for...................... /drum roll.................... people who want to queue up solo. 2 or more people, put them in a group queue. Seems simple to me..

"If you want to play ranked with a group you can make a ranked team" No, no I cannot. I do not have 4 other friends of my level and I don't want my rank to be based off a ranked team. I have 2 friends at most that I'd be willing to do ranked with but even if I find another 2 people I don't want to start a ranked team when I have already spent so much time getting my rank in a non team rank.
