Morgana.... The counter-midlaner?

Elindiir··3 votes·1,283 views

So, I like to play Morgana once in a while, and one thing I began to realize is that 1: her farming is incredible, 2: she laughs in the face of CC, and 3: her lane sustain is nothing short of amazing with her spell vamp and ramping damage with her W... All of this being quite good for countering AP midlaners. What I do not understand though, is why people don't take her mid much...

Because all she really does is push the lane with her Corrupted Soil. Sure she can farm well if you get it maxed first and are decent at last hitting, but laughing in the face of cc is a bit of an overstatement. She is an easy gank target due to her immobility, her shield can be popped with one strong spell for the most part (I personally like to use Lux E + passive hit to pop it before going for a Q), and yes she does have lane sustain with her spellvamp, but it isn't so much that you can't burst through it. Also her shield only blocks magic damage so AD mid laners have a field day with her. She is just much better suited as a support where her cc and shield can be utilized more in helping an ADC get fed or protecting them from cc that would certainly spell their death.

I find the spell shield particularly useful with champions with very telegraphed CC like Ekko, Anivia, Annie, Lissandra, Taliyah. Lux is a little harder, but in general it is easier to utilize the spell shield in a solo lane... Also, Talon is in a lot of trouble with Morgana, especially if she has ghost (her ult can be used on his ult), and Morgana can trade with a Yasuo better than most AP champions because her W is not a projectile, and the fact that Morgana can shield his tornado. Zed is still an issue, but zed is always an issue. I have also had interesting luck with Morgana in the top lane against Garen, since whenever he goes to silence you, you shield then Q then W then if he is STILL persistent, R-W

I actually run morg mid a ton on my main. Spell shield is amazing for both all ins and ganks defence. She can push hard and has fantastic roams because of her snare/ult.

She isnt op by any means, but she's a solid pick and very safe as a first pick

Interesting to think about since she only needs to ban out champs that are effectively permabanned...

The problem is that she's more of a "supportive/neutralizing" midlaner and doesn't exactly offer much offensive pressure. She's like Ori/Lulu/Karma, only that those three are better equipped to handle both AD and AP threats whereas morg is arguably best against AP matchups who are also slightly immobile (like kat, or TF).

I'd beg to differ. Her q alone can get up to a hefty 8-900 damage, and her soils thing under that, if your doing well and the enemy squishies have no defences, which is common, you can one shot adc,'s and some mages.

She leans a little more towards the supportish side similar to ori, because she can't spam much continuous damage, but if played smartly can make a big impact in teamfights and still output a high level of damage.

Cerrainitly you need a team because she can't hard carry, but her contributions can help even a slightly struggling team, if you can snag a single carry on their team with a Q

Bit confused, as you started out disagreeing with me but then listed points that "kinda" agree with me. Aside from the fact that she's almost always seen in the support role (with an adc), the fact her kit contains so much cc and not as much damage as the likes of viktor/azir/vlad makes her more of a defensive mid-laner than an offensive one. While her spells can pack damage, their also very stationary which forces her to run either high cdr or use them with caution in order to be effective in teamfights. Morg is and has always been an AP/CC-neutralizing pick, making her a support mid-laner and not a carry one.

I desagree with the part about her not having an offensive ish role. Her defense can be a great offence. Simply knowing that getting snare-pooled is mentally offensive and keep the enemy pretty cautious, and eventually there is a high chance you are going to be able to nab a squishy as Q has a pretty good range, and even if a fight doesn't happen when you get them it will hurt them badly and tilt things in your favor.

No, not as offense orientated as a lot of mages, but if you are a patient morg she still brings offence to the team

zed and yasuo were too popular to let her play mid imo.

shield can't save you from their damage or ults

Elindiir1 votes

Somebody always bans Zed and its not hard to get Yasuo banned... Yasuo though isn't THAT horrible against her though because her big damage contributions aren't all projectiles.... (though I don't know if her ult is able to go through windwall...) Also, Morgana's shield DOES save her from Yasuo's ult because you have to be CCed to use his ult.

Reaper Soraka1 votes

Well give it a shot, maybe she's mobile enough now to deal with the problems she seemed to have before. It's definitely possible she's a good pick now I guess. :D

Elindiir1 votes

While there IS a small improvement in her own potential mobility (with items and the massive buff to ghost), the meta has shifted to benefit AP champions that either create a fortress in their lane, (Cassiopeia Azir Anivia Heimerdinger Ziggs Zyra Taliyah ) or those that take advantage of any breach in their defenses (Annie Lux Syndra Veigar ), both types of which Morgana has a means to deal with...

Just wait until some pro takes her mid and utterly destroys a Fizz or Yasuo or some other popular, strong opponent for a few games. Morg will become FotM overnight and you'll be strange for not picking her mid. If the next patch actually lowers the strengths of some powerful champions instead of slapping them with a wet noodle we might even see the possibility of Morgana bans.

morganas one of those champs you can just smoke weed and just chill out and not go 0-20

only thing I don't like about her is her waveclear, it's pretty slow and often minions will steal the cs before you get a pool tick in. playing against someone who shoves harder than you is a pain to deal with csing under tower

Elindiir1 votes

3 points in her W will kill minions outright and the one that gets targeted is easy to pick off with your autos.... I use my Q on the cannon minion and the passive DFT damage helps too. her waveclear is almost as good as post-6 Anivia's

She's a great early mid laner since you just use push like crazy, sustain and then block most damage thanks to your black shield. I would argue that she's not the best after the laning phase is done. Yes her ultimate is wonderful if you can pull it off but fact of the matter with so many people having movement related abilities now it just doesn't really happen as much.

Ghost doesn't matter if they break the tether. Also then you can't flash engage. Plus typically you have to zhonyas or you get bursted down.

Elindiir1 votes

Depends on the enemies..... Ghost can be a great engage with the buffs it got and it keeps people from breaking tether if done right. Black Shield keeps you from being CCed and Seraph's can be used to get tankier without using Zhonya's.... Zhonya's is a last resort though. But not getting creep blocked and easily outrunning enemies is so nice.

Because playing morgana mid is boring.

You will probably win your lane, you will probably not encounter a lot of problems, but what do you do?

Land Q and put your W under your target. Repeat. They try something? Shield. Wait. W. Q W. Oh they low. QWR they are dead.

Her play style mid lane is not interactive and she is the only one playing in her lane. The enemy just can't do things.

Elindiir1 votes

I see your point... Though there are still a LOT of people who play Singed and Nasus.....

I will admit that Morgana gets "top lane syndrome" as she farms and farms... And I am also guilty of forgetting about the other lanes until a super-fed ADC and/or top laner shows up and make you hope to god that your Q lands under tower........
