I got a better option: Replace Thornmail with Bloodthirster.

Boom, done. You still have a defensive item that makes sense for an ADC to buy.

Huh. Now that I think about it, it would be cool if we had a tutorial for each role, complete with commonly built items. Garen is definitely mechanically simple enough to be the bruiser tutorial, while they could keep the Ashe tutorial for ADC (though with a change to the whole Thornmail thing).

I do not get this whole thing about the Ashe / Thornmail thing.

That is only on the ARAM tutorial........the newer tutorial on summoners rift covers everything and does not have you build thornmail on Ashe.

I do agree that Ashe should be replaced, but despite how easy Garen is, I don't think he's the best choice for the tutorial character. The tutorial character should be a character that has the general traits of every other champion to an easier extent.

This means that the tutorial character should have: Q: Skillshot/other projectile W: Some strong high-CD ability E: A dash of some sort R: Pretty much any ult that isn't like Kassadin or Corki

The champion who I really like to fill this is actually Poppy. While Garen is easier, adapting to other champions would be a lot more difficult if you started with him. Alternatively, Poppy has a lot of really cool things she can do, while still not requiring too much skill to understand at a very basic level.

I'm probably crazy, but this is my idea and I'd like to know what others think of it.

If you're not killing minions with Garen's W, you're not trying hard enough. Just try harder, I"m sure you can do it :P
